JMJ February 4, 2018 My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always. In the words of remembrance a few weeks ago I heard the phrase: “right time, right place, right people . . .” these words lingered in my mind as I was writing this letter. This phrase I thought applies to the people who experienced the manifestation of God’s loving mercy, compassion and healing through our Lord Jesus in the Gospel.

Each Sunday, the Lord’s Day, we are asked to be these very people: “to be at the right time, the right place and with the right people.” When we gather at Mass we set aside that time to encounter the Real Presence of God in the Living Word Proclaimed and in the Sacramental Gifts of His Precious Body and Blood. It is the right place because our Lord Jesus reminded us that “whenever three or more are gathered in my name, I am in their midst.” To be the right people we need to believe, to be open and accept the gifts of loving providence we are being given. JMJ We can never control what happens in our lives but we can always pray and ask for the guidance to be prepared. This is the reason we have conducted yesterday the Seminar on Active Shooter what to do in case it happens and other life-threatening circumstance. We have two more dates February 6 at 7:00pm & February 22 at 7:00pm for this Seminar so that as a parish family we are forewarned and forearmed to deal with situations that have recently taken place in society.

Again, this year our diocese is providing opportunities for us to share our resources through the PSA “Proud to be Catholic, Know, Love, and Serve” campaign. This annual campaign supports diocesan ministries in many ways. Please look for a letter from Father Thomas in the mail during the first week of February with information on the PSA. This year our Parish’s share of the costs of these ministries is $128,000; donations received over that amount will be returned to the Parish for our building fund needs. Please come to Mass on the weekend of February 17th and 18th and be prepared to make your pledge and initial payment. Please prayerfully consider the amount of your pledge to the PSA. Together we are united in the Catholic faith knowing that through your generosity many people will be served. Thank you for your participation in the life of Santiago de Compostela and the Diocese of Orange.

Scripture tells us the story of Paul meeting Priscilla and Aquila, who were part of a Jewish/Christian group expelled from Rome by Emperor Claudius. The group were considered “trouble makers” because of their preaching “Chrestus” in 49 AD. (Scholars think that to be a reference to Christ and it seems that Jesus is being talked about in Jewish circles as “the Messiah”.) Priscilla and Aquila take in Paul as their houseguest as they were all in the tent-making trade. Imagine their conversations!! They became close friends and co-workers in preaching the Good News of Jesus the Christ. Note: No Bible Study on Ash Wednesday, February 14th Meetings: Wednesdays from 9:00am-11:15am or 7:00pm-9:00pm in Santiago Parish Center For further information contact Nancy 949-766-8126 or Barb 949-768-1170.

Dispensation and the Lenten Fast The Lenten season calls all faithful Catholics to remember in heart and in mind the redemptive self-sacrifice of Jesus for the life of the world. From the earliest days of our faith, Christians have been called to special penance and sacrifice during not only the 40 days of Lent but especially on the significant days of the Lenten liturgical season, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday as well as all the Friday’s of Lent. In light of this, all Catholics in the United States are encouraged to enter into sacrificial penance during these days and, specifically, to refrain from the eating of meat on all the Fridays of Lent, with the added penance of holy fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. While this discipline of penance and fasting is serious, it no longer binds one under pain of grave sin. For a sufficiently good reason (e.g., a special family celebration, and ethnic festival, Lunar Ne Year, etc.), one may dispense oneself from this serious obligation and may legitimately substitute another day of the week to fulfill this penance. It is for this reason, that there is no need for a specific “dispensation” from the Bishop, lifting the penance for these days.

PARISH OFFICE CLOSURE Our Parish Offices and Hall will be closed on Monday, Monday February 19th, 2018 in observance of Presidents’ Day. Our regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, February 20th, 2018. SENIOR ACTIVITIES February 20th Lunch at Mimi’s on Lake Forest Dr. and Muirlands. Meet there at 11:00am.
