The Fifth Sunday of Lent JMJ 8 March, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always. “Eternal rest grant unto our Brother Bill, O Lord . . .” this was the prayer I had in mind and heart when I learned about the demise of William “Bill” Breen last Friday. I followed it up with “Thank you Lord for the gift of Bill.” He is one of the founding members of our parish and a very generous person who practiced his Stewardship and Discipleship in his involvement and financial support here at Santiago de Compostela. He was one of the “regulars,” a term often used to identify those who attend the daily Masses. Almost two years ago, when I first came here, he gave me a very warm welcome at our first encounter. He even shared with me, and made sure I learned (memorized) a greeting with the appropriate response. It was this: “Top of the Morning!” and the response: “The rest of the day to the Lord.” It became our sort of “code greeting.” I say this because I have used the first part to greet others and most often than not they draw blank unless Bill has previously shared it with them, then they remember the second part. I reflected on this greeting and I realized how Bill has practiced truly living “the rest of the Day to the Lord.” It was a prayer and a reminder on how to carry out each and every day. To recognize with gratitude “top of the morning,” and manifest a lifestyle value: “The rest of the Day to the Lord.” The outstanding part of it is that he was joyful in his witnessing and kind in his relationships. He may be gone physically here on earth, but he is someone who will continue to inspire and challenge us to be good stewards of the legacy he has left behind in our Parish Family. I saw him last Friday afternoon when Pearl and I prayed the Commendation of the Dying. Towards the end, I thought of singing “Be Not Afraid.” I wanted Bill to hear the words of assurance, but I think it was more

March 13, 2016 words of assurance for Pearl and myself. Bill will still be with us in spirit. He will be one of our advocates before Jesus, our Lord. Let us all take a lesson with the example Bill Breen has shown us. Let this Season of Lent be truly a time of Rediscovering Jesus and being Christians in word and deed. We can start by reflecting on how we can be authentic Stewards of the gifts of faith, time, talents and treasure. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Yo quería a nuestro hermano Bill. . . ".

Bible Study Next Class on Wednesday, March 16th 9am and 7pm This is the week to prepare for the upcoming Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday. A suggestion: read the four accounts of the Passion Narratives in the Gospels. Where are they similar and do you find many differences? Mark, the first gospel written in 65AD, Matthew and Luke both written about 85AD, but to different communities, and John written, scholars suggest, between 90 and 100AD. Put yourself there in that ancient world and when the church celebrates and remembers, you may feel more included or involved in the liturgies. For further information, please call Nancy at 949-766-8126 or Barb at 949-768-1170.

Jubilee Year of Mercy - Fifth Sunday of Lent How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope Francis, who has made mercy his papacy’s theme, took place the last time today’s Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman was proclaimed. “Jesus’ attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words of love, of mercy, an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither do I condemn you’ ” (John 8:11). Francis continued: “God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience, the patience [God] has with each one of us? That is [God’s] mercy. [God] always has patience, patience with us . . . understands us . . . waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us” if we return ‘with a contrite heart” (Pope Francis, Angelus address, March 17, 2013). Parishes preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those “raised” from the “death” of sin, Jesus defines the community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him and let him go” (John 11:44).
