German Pronunciation If you know the German alphabet you are basically all set except for a couple of hidden/muted sounds: • e after an i • Lied/song and Krieg/war • Mit/with and Miete/rent
• h is, contrary to the muted French h- very much pronounced in German • Humor/humor, hier/here • With one exception: H in the middle of a word • ein Sohn/son Ton - Sohn wo - wohnen
• The hardest sounding combination of letters in German is the ch • mach! imperative form of machen/do it! • The girl/Mädchen or Hündchen/puppy sound perfectly soft by comparison.
• Umlauts on three vowels: aou • The plural form of apple/ Apfel → Äpfel/apples • oft (often) → öfter (more often) • unter/underneath - über/ above
• The German s is a soft s • English so →soft German so • English sun → Sonne in German • The s is a hard sound only when doubled: er muss/he must → Kuss/ kiss
