HRISM MASS

At the annual Chrism Mass, the laity, Deacons, and Priests of our diocese gather with our Bishop to celebrate the priesthood of Jesus Christ. The oils blessed and consecrated this evening will be the means by which our great High Priest pours forth his grace upon the Church throughout the coming year. As we give thanks for these blessings yet to come, let us also remember the grace received when God fashioned us into “a royal priesthood” (1 Pt 2:9) in his Son:

When we were baptized into Christ and clothed ourselves in him, we were transformed into the likeness of the Son of God. Having destined us to be his adopted sons, God gave us a likeness to Christ in his glory, and living as we do in communion with Christ, God’s anointed, we ourselves are rightly called “the anointed ones.” When he said: Do not touch my anointed ones, God was speaking of us. We became “the anointed ones” when we received the sign of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, everything took place in us by means of images, because we ourselves are images of Christ. Christ bathed in the river Jordan, imparting to its waters the fragrance of his divinity, and when he came up from them the Holy Spirit descended upon him, like resting upon like. So we also, after coming up from the sacred waters of Baptism, were anointed with Chrism, which signifies the Holy Spirit, by whom Christ was anointed and of whom blessed Isaiah prophesied in the name of the Lord: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor. Christ's anointing was not by human hands, nor was it with ordinary oil. On the contrary, having destined him to be the Savior of the whole world, the Father himself anointed him with the Holy Spirit. The words of Peter bear witness to this: Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit. And David the prophet proclaimed: Your throne, O God, shall endure for ever; your royal scepter is a scepter of justice. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above all your fellows. The oil of gladness with which Christ was anointed was a spiritual oil; it was in fact the Holy Spirit himself, who is called the oil of gladness because he is the source of spiritual joy. But we too have been anointed with oil, and by this anointing we have entered into fellowship with Christ and have received a share in his life. Beware of thinking that this holy oil is simply ordinary oil and nothing else. After the invocation of the Spirit it is no longer ordinary oil but the gift of Christ, and by the presence of his divinity it becomes the instrument through which we receive the Holy Spirit. While symbolically, on our foreheads and senses, our bodies are anointed with this oil that we see, our souls are sanctified by the holy and life-giving Spirit. (Jerusalem Catechesis 21.1-3)

GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION For Catholics

As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.

For our fellow Christians

We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3).

For those not receiving Holy Communion

All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.

For non-Christians

We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

NORMAS PARA LA RECEPCIÓN DE LA COMUNIÓN Para los católicos

Los católicos participamos plenamente en la celebración de la Eucaristía cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión. Se nos anima a recibirla frecuentemente y con devoción. Para estar debidamente preparados a recibir la Eucaristía, los fieles no deben haber cometido pecado grave y deben haber ayunado por una hora antes de comulgar. Quien haya cometido pecado grave desde su última confesión no debe recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor sin antes haberse confesado con un sacerdote, excepto en situaciones extremas cuando no hay oportunidad de confesarse. En tal caso, los fieles deben estar conscientes de la obligación de hacer un acto de Contrición perfecta con la intención de confesarse lo más pronto posible (Derecho Canónico, canon 916). Se anima a los fieles a recibir el Sacramento de la Penitencia con frecuencia.

Para los cristianos no católicos

Damos la bienvenida a todos los cristianos, como a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a esta celebración de la Eucaristía. Rogamos para que nuestro bautismo común y el Espíritu Santo nos unan unos a otros en esta Eucaristía y que comiencen a disiparse las lamentables divisiones que nos separan. Siguiendo la oración del Señor "que todos sean uno" (Jn 17:21), rogamos para que estas divisiones sean aminoradas y finalmente desaparezcan. Los católicos creemos que la celebración Eucarística es una señal de unidad en la fe, la vida y el culto. A los miembros de las Iglesias con las cuales no estamos plenamente unidos, por lo general no se les invita a comulgar. Para compartir la Eucaristía en situaciones excepcionales, con cristianos no católicos, se necesita obtener el permiso del obispo diocesano según las provisiones del canon 844 &4 del Derecho Canónico. Beloved sons, on the anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred his priesthood on his Apostles and on us, are you resolved to renew, in the presence of your Bishop and God’s holy people, the promises you once made? Priests:

Are you resolved to be more united with the Lord Jesus and more closely conformed to him, denying yourselves and confirming those promises about sacred duties towards Christ's Church which, prompted by love of him, you willingly and joyfully pledged on the day of your priestly ordination?

Are you resolved to be faithful stewards of the mysteries of God in the Holy Eucharist and the other liturgical rites and to discharge faithfully the sacred office of teaching, following Christ the Head and Shepherd, not seeking any gain, but moved only by zeal for souls?

Vessels of olive oil designated to become the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens are brought forward to be blessed by the Bishop. The third vessel contains a mixture of olive oil, balsam and perfume to be consecrated for the Sacred Chrism. These oils will be enshrined in the Cathedral’s ambry for use here, and to replenish parish supplies throughout the year.

The oils are brought to the Bishop by representatives from the diocese who anticipate being anointed in the coming year, or who are involved in professions or ministries in which the oils are used. Smaller vessels of oils have also been prepared and boxed for distribution to the parishes after the Mass. These sets of oils are in the large baskets placed on the steps of the sanctuary. The blessing or consecration of these oils will be part of Bishop Walkowiak’s intention in his prayers over the oils. At the direction of the cantor, please join in singing:

The Blessing of the Oil of the Sick The Oil of the Sick is used to bring comfort and support to the sick in their infirmity. The Bishop blesses the Oil of the Sick. The Blessing of the Oil of Catechumens The Oil of Catechumens is used in the preparation of catechumens for their Baptism. The Bishop blesses the Oil of Catechumens.

The Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the newly baptized, to seal the candidates for Confirmation, and to anoint the hands of Presbyters and the heads of Bishops at their Ordination, as well as in the rites of anointing pertaining to the dedication of churches and altars. At the words, “and so, Father…,” all concelebrants extend their right hand toward the Chrism, without saying anything, until the end of the prayer. The Bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism.
