Christmas Midnight Mass December 25, 2014

W

elcome to our celebration of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ! In our tradition, we mark time as Jesus did, by starting each day at sunset, and so we begin the celebration of every solemnity, feast and Sunday in the early evening. For this great solemnity, we also celebrate Mass at midnight, at dawn and in the day, sanctifying this holy time in a special way, opening a rich treasury of readings, prayers, antiphons and hymns. Enter into this ancient but always fresh celebration, welcoming our Savior into the world and into your heart, participating fully with a willing spirit, an attentive ear, and a loud voice. Jesus Christ is born! Alleluia! Before Mass begins, join us in celebrating through song and meditation, the musical expressions of joy in the carols and choral music of various peoples, cultures, times and styles.

NOTES Mass at midnight is televised live and so we must surrender the first moment after 12 to the demands of broadcasting. There will likely be a moment or two of silence right before the beginning of Mass. Please watch for the cantor's signal for quiet. Please be sure your cell phone is turned off or set to vibrate. Hearing assistance devices are available from the ushers in the back of church. Restrooms are available downstairs and accessible by elevator.

AWAY IN A MANGER Away in a manger, no crib for a bed. The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay. The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing; the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love yo9u, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender card, And fit us for heaven to live with your there.

I opened my eyes and saw a flowering tree. There I saw a marvelous flower bud. Soon we heard a song from a little bird, who said to the shepherds: "Go from here, In Bethlehem you will find the little lamb."

Christmas Proclamation

The vigil of Christmas has its own proper solemnity in the announcement of Christ’s birthday. This text, which is intended to be sung on Christmas as the first part of the martyrology (a list of the saints of the church), pinpoints the coming of Christ in our history. This precision was developed in part to distinguish Jesus from the gods of myth whose existence had no historical reference, whereas the Son of Man was born, lived among us, died and rose in recorded human memory. The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ages beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since Abraham, our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh.

Penitential Act

8

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GLORIA DE NOEL THOMAS NIEL

1.

And on earth peace to men of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory.

2.

Lord God, heavenly King, God, almighty Father. Only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father: You take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

3.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

ITURGY OF THE WORD ISAIAH 9:1-6

Proclaimed in English

The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 96 TODAY, TODAY IS BORN OUR SAVIOR

1. Sing! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing to the Lord all you nations on earth. Sing, sing to the Lord all you lands, O sing to the Lord, bless his name!

3. Let the heavens and earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound. Let the plains be filled with joy! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.

2. Announce his salvation day after day. Tell his glory among the nations. Tell his glory among all peoples, Tell of his wondrous deeds.

4. They shall exult before the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice, the peoples with his constancy.

TITUS 2:11-14 Proclaimed in Spanish

Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ,

who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

LUKE 2:1-14 Proclaimed in English

” The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

MOST REVEREND DAVID J. WALKOWIAK BISHOP OF GRAND RAPIDS

Profession of Faith please stand

I believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (genuflect) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
