Ireland, the 1916 Rising and the Post Office Ireland from 1922 – The ‘Larsson’ collection
Irland, der Aufstand von 1916 und das Postamt Irland ab 1922 – Die Sammlung ‚Larsson‘
Dublin’s General Post Office, Dublins Hauptpostamt – with its fine neo-classical das General Post Office façade, has been at the heart (GPO) – mit seiner schönen of the city for two hundred neoklassizistischen Fassade years, a place for business of befindet sich seit über 200 all kinds - letters, telephones, Jahren im Herzen der Stadt, banking and radio – but it has ein Ort um allerlei Geschäfte also become the country’s zu erledigen – Briefe, emotional heart. This year, it Telefonate, Banksachen has been the focal point of the und Radio – es wurde aber commemorative ceremonies auch das ‚gefühlte Herz‘ des that have marked the ganzen Landes. Dieses Jahr Dublin‘s General Post Office in 1828 centenary of the Easter Rising, war es der Schwerpunkt für the armed rebellion that sought in April 1916 to overthrow die Gedenkveranstaltungen der Hundertjahrfeier des government in Ireland, sever the links that had long bound Osteraufstandes, die bewaffnete Rebellion die in 1916 Ireland to England and establish instead an independent stattfand und bei der versucht wurde die Regierung in Irish Republic. The physical proximity of the two islands has Irland zu stürzen, die alten Verbindungen von Irland zu meant that Ireland and Britain have long shared aspects England zu trennen und stattdessen eine unabhängige of their history – the shortest distance between the two irische Republik zu gründen. England’s political involvement with Ireland dates back to the twelfth century when a Norman lord, Richard de Die Verwaltung durch England und erste Clare or ‘Strongbow’, was invited to assist a local Irish Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen chief in his wars. It was an event that led, over time, to the Englands politisches Engagement in Irland geht zurück ins conquest and colonisation of Ireland. Wars and rebellions 12. Dies war ein Ereignis, das, mit der Zeit dazu führte, Irland Irish alliances with Spain and later with France encouraged zu erobern und zu kolonisieren. language. This ‘Celtic Revival’, led by people like W B Yeats, drew support from a broad cross-section of society but encouraged a minority to reconsider armed rebellion as a way of winning Irish independence from England. The Easter rising of 1916 Those who planned the 1916 rebellion were inspired by different visions. Tom Clarke, whose name appears at the head of those who signed the 1916 Proclamation, was a long-standing proponent of revolution. Patrick Pearse and Thomas MacDonagh, were teachers who saw revolutionary violence and sacrifice as a way to create an Ireland which could recapture the nobility and heroism of the ancient Irish Fianna. Others, like James Connolly and Constance Markievicz, wanted a social revolution which would lead to a fairer society for working people. While their aims and beliefs often diverged, they were united in believing that an independent Irish Republic was what was required. The First World War, in which many thousands of Irishmen were engaged, offered them a chance to rebel and, with German assistance, they hoped for success. Dublin’s GPO, the communications hub of Ireland, was chosen as the headquarters of the rebels and, on Easter Monday 1916, armed men entered the building and ordered staff to leave. Most did but those in the GPO Telegraph Office barricaded themselves in and tried to make contact with the army. Not until they were fired on by the rebels did they leave and, even then, Miss Gordon, supervisor of the female staff insisted on taking a wounded soldier to hospital. This unusually brave action was acknowledged by one of the rebel leaders who asked, however, that the man would be brought back to become a prisoner in the GPO.Though hard to believe, this is precisely what happened! The rebels also occupied other buildings around Dublin city and for six days, they maintained a fight until overwhelmed by greatly superior government forces. The GPO was completely destroyed.
Dublin‘s General Post Office after the 1916 uprising
IRELAND FROM 1922 - The 'Larsson' Collection The rebellion, planned in secret, had no popular support and participants were blamed for the unnecessary death of close to 500 people and the destruction of Dublin’s city centre. When, however, the leaders were executed and others imprisoned in England and Wales, public opinion swung in favour of those who had been prepared to sacrifice their lives for the ideal of an Irish Republic. While the Rising failed, it was the catalyst for more widespread guerrilla activity which led to the creation of an Irish Free State in
1922. Six Ulster counties, where a majority had no wish to sever their connection with Britain, became Northern Ireland and remained within the United Kingdom. This partition of Ireland created further difficulties over the years but successful State visits by Queen Elizabeth to Ireland and by President Higgins to Britain in the recent past have been very helpful in healing divisions. The Irish Postal Administration from 1922 In 1922, the Post Office was at the forefront in representing political change: the royal arms were removed from buildings, red letters boxes were painted green and British stamps were overprinted in Irish. These overprint issues have been extensively studied, not least perhaps by King George V himself, whose feelings at seeing part of his kingdom opt for independence may have been mollified by his interest in its newly overprinted stamps! The creation of a new series of Irish stamps was a priority for the Irish Postmaster

General who arranged for a notice to be placed in the Irish Press of the 1st February 1922, announcing a competition for the design of a new definitive series. There was a good response from the public and entries were received from both established artists and those with no qualifications beyond their enthusiasm. The four designs selected for the lower value stamps, the Map of Ireland, Celtic Cross etc. are well known to collectors: they remained in use for nearly 50 years until replaced by Heinrich Gerl’s innovative reworking of a Celtic theme in 1968.

Changes in technology and fashion and a greater corporate focus on the commercial side of Post Office business have influenced Irish stamp design and production over the last twenty years. The definition of ‘Irishness’ has been widened and the shamrocks and La Tène-style decoration of the early years has given way to the sort of ‘augmented reality’ information that is coded into the current 1916 set. Design style and collecting tastes are always changing, of course, but the story of Ireland and its people continues to be told in an attractive and informative way through its postage stamps and, for those new to the field, I can only suggest that 2016 provides a memorable point to start a collection.

Ireland from 1922 – the “Larsson” Collection
Irland ab 1922 – Die Sammlung ‘Larsson’
With great devotion, the owner of the “Larsson” collection has assembled the overprinted stamps from the period 1922 to 1925 and the subsequent definitives of Ireland.
For decades he has understood the acquisition of great rarities. He has of course also had the “ordinary”, but specialities were particularly important to him. Essays, proofs, inverted watermarks, inverted overprints, misplaced overprints. And all of these not only on individual stamps, but also pairs, strips, blocks, corner marginal pieces etc. were incorporated into this unique collection. The rare early stamp booklets are also represented. Even the famous coil stamps of the 2d definitive issue of 1935, coveted by all Ireland collectors, are to be found in the collection. We are able to present this collection to you now, just on the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. With a few exceptions, all the lots in the Ireland section that follows are from the “Larsson” collection. You, as an active collector of Ireland, will surely find something on offer for your collection. And as a non-collector of Ireland, you may perhaps take this unique opportunity to experience the fascination of this collecting area, with the ability to acquire many important items!
