Phase I and Phase II Now Underway: Growing in Faith, Building Together ± Construction on our athletic fields is now well underway on our Cathedral Campus, as is our Building Campaign for the new Parish Center and improvements to our Sacred Heart Campus. With now triple the needs for additional meeting space for faith formation and community activities, let alone the inadequate parking resources, our tremendous growth in our parish has far exceeded the capacity of our facilities, which were largely built in the 1930’s. With almost 1000 children now in Catholic formation and education, plus 100’s of adults, we simply need much more room. Thus, we are beginning this great endeavor to build a Parish Center, doing so as a parish family. Our family is Catholic in the best sense of the term, comprising people, literally from all over the world, walks of life, vocations, all serving Our Lord in many varied ways. We are not though just a group of people, but part of the family of Our Lord ± the Body of Christ, who seeks to grow in Him, receiving Him in His Word and in the Holy Eucharist to do so, and then as those who are His Body, the Church, as we bring His presence and action into our world. As a family, we know that what we do, serves now and in the future. We also know that it often takes sacrifice, what we do out of love for our family, to help others prosper and reach the potential Our Lord places in every human soul. Join me then in praying at Mass and at home for our success. Also, see the trifold brochure on our project, which will be sent to you and prayerfully begin considering a sacrificial gift to this great endeavor for our parish. You will notice a schedule on the back and how a sacrificial gift could be structured over 36 months ± what a monthly sacrifice could look like for prayerful consideration in your monthly budget. In the coming weeks, I will then be in contact with you directly in this process of prayerful consideration of a sacrificial gift. We know from our history as a nation, parish community and our own living that all great things require sacrifice and that we must work with others to succeed. I invite you to do just that as we work on building facilities we need to pass on the gift of Catholic faith to the next generation, and in so doing, making it a priority in our life, to give glory where it is forever due: in all things to God, always on behalf of the Holy Name of Jesus. Parish Pastoral Staff Updates ± A transition in our administrative staff. After generously assisting in admin support my predecessor, Father Justin Kerber, C.P. for 5 years and then myself for the last year, our parishioner, Anne Speicher retired this week. Anne has been a leader in our Diocese, not only here at our parish, but also as Executive Secretary to Bishop Gossman for 33 years, when he served as Bishop of Raleigh and then following his retirement. For these many years of faithful and dedicated service, I join you in expressing our great gratitude to Anne, along with our prayerful best wishes. Then joining our staff is Gigi Rastelli starting this last Monday. Gigi is new to our community with her husband and two children. Gigi is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and brings with her a great deal of parish experience and expertise. Kindly keep all of our parish pastoral staff among your intentions. Save the Date: Annual Red Mass ± On Friday, October, 4th Bishop Luis is inviting all those who work or study in the legal field or in government to join him for the annual Red Mass at 12:10 pm at Sacred Heart Church downtown. This Mass is so named, as to acknowledge the essential role of the Holy Spirit to guide all study and decisions in matters pertaining to legal decisions as well as those in government. Join us for this important annual gathering for prayer, followed by a reception following at the Campbell University Wiggins School of Law, directly across the street from Sacred Heart. If this is your field of work and/or study, also an excellent opportunity to get more information and meet members of our local Saint Thomas More Society, which is a group founded a few years ago by and for professionals in support of the study and practice of the law from a Catholic perspective. Plan to join us. Save the Date: Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi and Blessing of Animals ± The Church throughout the world celebrates the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi this year on Friday, October 4, 2019. We will do so, but for ease of our parishioners and pilgrims who wish to participate in another tradition associated with this feast, we will bless animals after our Saturday morning daily Mass, which will be celebrated on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 9 am (approx. 9:45 am). Plan to join us! Save the Date: Parish Picnic ± Our parish picnic will follow all Masses on Sunday, October 13th. My great thanks to our Living Faith Committee for all of the kind assistance in this annual gathering of our parish community for some time of fellowship and fun. Discerning Stewardship in Ministry ± That same weekend of October 13th and also following both the Saturday night and Sunday Masses, we will be hosting all of the liturgical and community life ministries of our parish, as part of the yearround diet to assist all of our parishioners to discern how Our Lord is calling you to serve Him and others through your stewardship in ministry. Many opportunities to do so, from serving as an Usher, extending a welcoming to those joining us for Mass and other liturgies, to assisting as a Reader, inviting the prayer of the community at Mass of God’s Word. Our youth as well, from serving at the altar to proclaiming scripture as a Reader, to serving as an Usher ± a number of parents in our parish community introducing their child to participating and being a good steward in ministry, by modeling what it is to serve as an Usher right along with their child. Others as a model in some of our ministries which serve our parish community life. Well done! Thus, discern your ministry. Ask Our Lord how it is you may serve Him and His Church, the Body of Christ through your stewardship in ministry: How may I serve you Lord? Page 2 | September 22, 2019

First ReadingAm 8:47

Second Reading 1 Tm 2:18

Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! "When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!" The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done!

The Word of the Lord

Beloved: First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time. For this I was appointed preacher and apostle ² I am speaking the truth, I am not lying ², teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial PsalmPs 113:12, 46, 78

It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.

R. Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.

Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever. R. Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.

The Word of the Lord

 AlleluiaCf. 2 Cor 8:9

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high and looks upon the heavens and the earth below? R. Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.

He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor to seat them with princes, with the princes of his own people. R. Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor.

For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

R. Thanks be to God.

 GospelLk 16:1013

Jesus said to his disciples: "The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."

Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!. . .Never will I forget a thing they have done! Amos 8:47

Clearly the prophet Amos speaks out against those who oppress the poor. Because the poor have no voice, God becomes their advocate. God is the God of the poor. It should make us, as a society and as individuals, rethink how we take care of the poor and what we are doing to create a more just world. The poor are the first to be affected by climate change and abuse of resources. Our challenge is to view the world through God’s eyes and then, address what is wrong. I know I have written before Pope Francis’ words in “Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home,” that “everything is connected.” He goes on to say, “Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society” (91). We need to be more conscious of this interconnection in our daily lives. In the book, Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth, one of the writers, Satish Kumar, speaks about Mahatma Gandhi. Kumar writes, “Gandhi said, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’ He believed that there should be integrity between theory and practice, between word and action. Words gain power only when they are backed by a living example.” Kumar goes on to describe Gandhi’s day where he integrated “prayer, meditation, solitude, study, gardening, cooking and spinning and considered these activities as essential as negotiating with the British rulers of India, organizing the campaign for independence and working for the removal of untouchability. . .a perfect example of care of the external world with the care of the internal world” (Golden Sufi, 2016, 143). You can say, I am not Mahatma Gandhi. However, you can strive, as Kumar notes, to care for the soil while you also care for the soulyours and others. “The inner landscape of spirituality and the outer landscape of sustainability are intricately linked” (ibid, 144). As Christians, Jesus is our penultimate guiding example of a person who cared for both soul and soil. Think about how often Jesus went apart to pray; how often in parables he describes creation to make his point; how he challenged unjust systems that disadvantaged the poor. “Never will I forget a thing they have done!”

It is not just about Migrants “For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same?” (Mt5:46).It is not just about migrants: it is about charity. Through works of charity, we demonstrate our faith (cf.Jas2:18). And the highest form of charity is that shown to those unable to reciprocate and perhaps even to thank us in return. “It is also about the face we want to give to our society and about the value of each human life... The progress of our peoples... depends above all on our openness to being touched and moved by those who knock at our door. Their faces shatter and debunk all those false idols that can take over and enslave our lives; idols that promise an illusory and momentary happiness blind to the lives and sufferings of others” …Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2019. mediador entre Dios y los hombres, Cristo Jesús, hombre él también, que se entregó como rescate por todos.
