Divine Mercy Sunday ± This Sunday, April 28th, we join the Church throughout the world in celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday, which was so designated by Saint Pope John Paul II to be on the Second Sunday of Easter each year. The Holy Father had great devotion to Saint Faustina Kowalska and her meditations on the great love and mercy of Our Lord, including how He appeared to her, the image of which can be found at the end of the right loggia at the back of the nave. Similar in focus to the image of Our Lord when he appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque several centuries earlier, inviting her to contemplate His Sacred Heart, Our Lord invited Saint Faustina to consider the depth of that same Heart, given in mercy through His passion, bringing freedom, the gift of peace and new Life unto Life eternal.

This great prayer devotion of the Divine Mercy chaplet is known and cherished by many in our parish and throughout our Diocese. While each year it has been my custom to lead the sung prayer of the chaplet, this year the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism was already planned. Remember among your intentions these newest disciples of Our Lord to be, as they are touched by that same transforming mercy of Our Lord in Baptism. Plan to join us then next year at 3 pm on the Second Sunday of Easter 2020 for our parish celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday.

Prayers for Those Ordained to the Diaconate ± This weekend, Saturday, April 27th, Bishop Luis Zarama ordained two of our seminarians to the Diaconate here at our Cathedral: Mr. Jairo Maldonado and Mr. Matthew Nwafor. Both are now transitional deacons, meaning that they will serve as deacons as they continue formation for ordination to the Priesthood. Kindly keep these among your intentions as they begin this diaconal ministry in service to all the faithful, and for all our seminarians as they continue their discernment in formation for the Priesthood.

Morning Daily Mass Returns at our Cathedral ± The 7:00 am morning Mass, celebrated during the Season of Lent on Tuesdays and Fridays at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, will return this week, again scheduled for Tuesday and Friday mornings at 7:00 am. About 3040 of the faithful joined us during Lent, so plan to pray with us on the way to work or to begin your day, a beautiful way to dedicate the dawn and the hours of the day ahead to Our Lord, receiving the new Life only He can give us in His Word and His Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist.

Prayer for our Children Preparing for First Communion ± Beginning next weekend on Saturday, May 4th at the 5 pm Mass, on Saturday, May 11th at the 5 pm Mass and on Sunday, May 19th at both the 8:30 am and 1:30 pm Masses, our children who have been preparing this year to receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist for the first time, will do just that. Kindly keep them in your prayers, as well as their parents, that our children will learn to savor Our Lord’s Real Presence and know how He nourishes the gift of Life here unto Life eternal.

Prayer for Those Initiated ± At the Easter Vigil last weekend, we joyfully welcomed 19 initiated as Catholics. Those Neophytes, the official title the Church gives to these “new lovers” of Our Lord, having been fully initiated through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are Stefani Stewart Despagni, Joseph Michael Redmond Dombrowski, Marco Tulio Rivera Gomez, Brandi Hale, Jarrett Patrick, Alba Silva and Amaya Watter.

Those already Christian and thus one with us in Baptism, and who received Confirmation and Eucharist initiating them into full communion as Catholics are Nathan Burkett, Lori Byrd, Matthew Gruenewald, Mary Kernan, Sarah Kincaid, Cheyenne Bond McDonald, Ronald Eric Morin, Melissa Rich, Holly Swart, Bobby Tatum and Elizabeth Wooters. Already a baptized Catholic and who received Confirmation is Jennifer Murphy.

Pray that they may continue to grow in their embrace of Our Lord and their Catholic faith through the many graces they have now come to know in the sacramental life of the Church.

Many Thanks for a Prayerful Lent and a Joyous Beginning of Easter ± I join you in expressing great gratitude to all our parish pastoral staff and those parishioners who through their stewardship in ministry, have contributed to such a prayerful 40 days of the Lenten and joyous beginning to the 50 days of the Easter Season.

In particular, thanks to Dr. Mike Accurso and Dr. David Eaton, our Director and Assistant Directors of Music, respectively; Mr. Harry Taylor, Director of our Spiritual Choir; all our parish choirs and musicians; our many liturgical ministers for our English and Spanish language Masses as readers, cantors, ministers of holy communion, ushers and servers and their coordinators, in particular Dr. Peter Ferket, who coordinates our ushers for the English Masses, Mr. Charlie McCants, who coordinates our servers for the English Masses, and Mr. Luis Enrique Martinez, who coordinates all our servers for the Spanish Masses; Ms. Kate Gurney, President of our parish Altar Guild and all the Guild members, who attended not just to the beauty of the altar, but also all the greenery and floral arrangements; our sacristans, Mr. Bill Findlay, Mr. Ralph Townes and Mr. Gennaro Estrada and all who assist them very week; Mrs. Stacie Miller and those who worked with her to assist in a beautiful celebration for Holy Thursday this year; Mr. and all who worked so diligently to prepare and lead us in prayer for the Via Crucis on Good Friday this year; Mr. Carlos Nolasco and the Emmaús men and women, who assisted us with smooth and efficient transitions with parking for parishioners and pilgrims during this and the last two weekends, as well as this weekend; and our Raleigh PD first responders, who assist us every day with security and did such a great job throughout Holy Week.

My many thanks to these and all who so selflessly contributed to our prayer through their stewardship in ministry.

Parish Council Elections ± My gratitude to all who proposed members of our community to serve on our Parish Council. With the nominations process now complete, biographical data on candidates and ballots is being assembled for the election process, which is now scheduled to be done by paper ballot an online on the Third and Fourth Sundays of Easter, May 4/5 and May 11/12, 2019, respectively. The Second Sunday of Easter

First Reading Acts 5:1216

Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them. Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them. A large number of people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered, bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

"Write on a scroll what you see." Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, wearing an anklelength robe, with a gold sash around his chest.

When I caught sight of him, I fell down at his feet as though dead. He touched me with his right hand and said, "Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I hold the keys to death and the netherworld. Write down, therefore, what you have seen, and what is happening, and what will happen afterwards."

The Word of the Lord

 Alleluia Jn 20:29

Responsorial Psalm Ps 118:24, 1315, 222

R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. Let the house of Israel say, "His mercy endures forever." Let the house of Aaron say, "His mercy endures forever." Let those who fear the LORD say, "His mercy endures forever." R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. I was hard pressed and was falling, but the LORD helped me. My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior. The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just: R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the LORD has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. R. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting.

For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord; blessed are those who have not seen me, but still believe! R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Jn 20:1931

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

For the 12p Mass:

Second Reading Rev 1:911a, 1213, 1719

I, John, your brother, who share with you the distress, the kingdom, and the endurance we have in Jesus, found myself on the island called Patmos because I proclaimed God's word and gave testimony to Jesus. I was caught up in spirit on the Lord's day and heard behind me a voice as loud as a trumpet, which said, The Second Sunday of Easter

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.
