Prayer for those Graduating ± Beginning last weekend, many have been graduating from college or university and either continuing into graduate education or beginning their respective working career. It is a time of transition, also accompanied frequently by more intense discernment of a vocation of life. That was certainly the case with me, as I graduated from university and having recently become a Catholic, I also began several years of discernment of how it is that I would serve Our Lord. Interestingly, it was not to be in the graduate work I did in Immunology nor the work in that field that followed. Rather, that discernment of my vocation was certainly taking place through all my work in that field, leading me to begin more formal discernment and formation in seminary of a priestly vocation. The point is that prayers are needed for graduates as they similarly discern how it is they are begin called to serve Our Lord through a vocation of life, whether as a single person, those married, as a religious or as a deacon or priest. We are all called into one of those respective vocations and our discerning of which is oh so important, as through it, will we not only serve Our Lord’s purposes for our life, but also, will we find true happiness. Thus, pray for those graduating.

Transitions, Gratitude and Prayers ± Some personnel news: I have received and accepted the resignation of Dr. Janice Jett as our Cathedral School Principal for this academic year and part of the prior. I join you in expressing great gratitude to Dr. Jett for her contributions to Catholic education and formation during her time serving at Cathedral and assure her of prayerful best wishes as she begins an academic position much closer to her family home.
In collaboration with our Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Mike Fedewa and our Diocesan Director of Human Resources, Mr. Gary Rosia, I have initiated the search process for candidates who will be wellsuited to serve our parents in the Catholic education and formation of their children, as well as their development as future leaders in the Church and the greater community. With elections upcoming for the School Improvement Team and it is my intent to ask representatives from this newly elected consultative body for their input on the top candidates for the position of principal. Kindly, keep this process among your intentions and look for future updates.
Building Phases Update ± The soccer field and other playfield construction on our Cathedral campus is currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We received word late last week that this process should be complete by midJune 2019, after which construction will begin. With the decision to place artificial turf on the soccer field portion of the play areas to be constructed, its use should be begin in the Fall 2019 when construction is completed.
One of the longstanding issues on our Sacred Heart campus on which many have commented is the poor condition of the parking lot that is used not only for parking, but also for play during the school day, when in session. Through the generosity of a longstanding friend, repaving of that lot, restriping and repair to other areas of the parking areas will begin after the conclusion of the school academic year. I will also be consulting with our School Improvement Team members for consensus on other infrastructure items for the Sacred Heart campus which be added to Phase II of the building process. As announced, these will be included with the parish center building (which includes the gym) on the Cathedral campus. As I mentioned, the funding development work on this phase will begin in the late Summer, early Fall 2019.
Parish Council Elections ± With the elections process concluded for membership on our Parish Council, my gratitude to all who proposed members of our community and all who have so generously offered their time and talent to serve on our Parish Council. Please join me in extending prayerful best wishes and congratulations to the following parishioners, who began their term and service with their first meeting on this important advisory body to me as pastor: Irma Alcantar, Sally Bruns, Dan Dunbar, Genaro EstradaNuñez, George Morgan, Cyril Sagan, Janet Urieta and Steven Vozzo. Kindly include them as a body among your intentions as they assist in the regular work of strategic planning and some important upcoming projects, namely our planning for Phase II of our parish funding development and construction.
New Stained Glass on the Way ± Through the great generosity of two parishioners, more stained glass for our Cathedral church is on the way for one of the aisle windows, this one depicting the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Each of the windows rectangular windows depicting a scene from sacred scripture are original stained glass hand crafted in the late 1920’s by Paula Himmelsbach Balano, the first woman to have a stained glass studio in the United States. We have over 50 of these windows, but not all have been sponsored and thus not yet restored and then installed. The work is done at the Beyer Studios in Philadelphia, one of the finest studios in the USA for the restoration and repurposing of these fine works of sacred art, now serving to inspire a new generation of those encountering Our Lord in the beauty of stained glass. Look for more information in this column on its installation, expected in the late Summer, early Fall 2019.
Vacation Days ± Over a year in the planning, I will be taking a few vacation days from Sunday evening through the middle of next week, together with some longtime family friends in the UK, who are there to participate in the festivities associated with the 75th anniversary of DDay. My gratitude to Father Pedro Munoz and Father John Kane for their priestly generosity and also to our great parish pastoral staff.

Some who had come down from Judea were instructing the brothers, "Unless you are circumcised according to the Mosaic practice, you cannot be saved." Because there arose no little dissension and debate by Paul and Barnabas with them, it was decided that Paul, Barnabas, and some of the others should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.
The apostles and elders, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose representatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers.
This is the letter delivered by them: "The apostles and the elders, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings. Since we have heard that some of our number who went out without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind, we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. So we are sending Judas and Silas who will also convey this same message by word of mouth: 'It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. The angel took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. It gleamed with the splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone, like jasper, clear as crystal. It had a massive, high wall, with twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names were inscribed, the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites. There were three gates facing east, three north, three south, and three west. The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
I saw no temple in the city for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. The city had no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb.

Opportunities to Help Volunteers are needed at Oak City Cares which is a new multi services center for people experiencing homelessness. En aquellos días, vinieron de Judea a Antioquía algunos discípulos y se pusieron a enseñar a los hermanos que si no se circuncidaban conforme a la ley de Moisés, no podrían salvarse. Esto provocó un altercado y una violenta discusión con Pablo y Bernabé; al fin se decidió que Pablo, Bernabé y algunos más fueran a Jerusalén para tratar el asunto con los apóstoles y los presbíteros.
Los apóstoles y los presbíteros, de acuerdo con toda la comunidad cristiana, juzgaron oportuno elegir a algunos de entre ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé. Los elegidos fueron Judas (llamado Barsabás) y Silas, varones prominentes en la comunidad. A ellos les entregaron una carta que decía: "Nosotros, los apóstoles y los presbíteros, hermanos suyos, saludamos a los hermanos de Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia, convertidos del paganismo. Enterados de que algunos de entre nosotros, sin mandato nuestro, los han alarmado e inquietado a ustedes con sus palabras, hemos decidido de común acuerdo elegir a dos varones y enviárselos, en compañía de nuestros amados hermanos Bernabé y Pablo, que han consagrado su vida a la causa de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Segunda Lectura Apoc 21, 1014. 2223 Un ángel me transportó en espíritu a una montaña elevada, y me mostró a Jerusalén, la ciudad santa, que descendía del cielo, resplandeciente con la gloria de Dios. Su fulgor era semejante al de una piedra preciosa, como el de un diamante cristalino.
Tenía una muralla ancha y elevada, con doce puertas monumentales, y sobre ellas, doce ángeles y doce nombres escritos, los nombres de las doce tribus de Israel. Tres de estas puertas daban al oriente, tres al norte, tres al sur y tres al poniente. La muralla descansaba sobre doce cimientos, en los que estaban escritos los doce nombres de los apóstoles del Cordero.
No vi ningún templo en la ciudad, porque el Señor Dios todopoderoso y el Cordero son el templo. No necesita la luz del sol o de la luna, porque la gloria de Dios la ilumina y el Cordero es su lumbrera.

Ha sido una bendición dar por terminado este año de Catequesis. Muchos han sido las cosas que juntos hemos construido entre Catequistas, Niños y Padres de Familia. De ello estamos comenzando a ver los frutos. El primero fue el recibimiento de la Santa Eucaristía de los niños que después de dos años terminaron su preparación para hacer su Primera Comunión. Un bello testimonio que vio la comunidad de la Catedral, el pasado domingo 19 de mayo, cuando sesenta y cuatro niños recibieron a Cristo en sus vidas y en sus corazones por primera vez a través de la Sagrada Comunión. El segundo fruto es la semilla que cultivamos con los niños que comenzaron su primer año de formación y que están a mitad de camino. El próximo año para esta misma época, estaremos celebrando el recibimiento de su primera Eucaristía.
Unidos en alegría, gozo y fraternidad vamos a celebrar la clausura de este año, por eso les recordamos a los padres de familia del año de Catequesis 20182019, nuestro Picnic Familiar el sábado 1o de junio, 2019 de 10:003:00 p.m. en el parque Lake Wheeler Park, 6404 Lake Wheeler Rd.
