Gift of Work ± As we approach our annual national observance of Labor Day this coming weekend, important to recall our Catholic teaching on the gift of work, its theological roots and the purpose to which Our Lord gives to what we do in our many labors. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis provides a basic framework for our reflection: “Jesus worked with his hands, in daily contact with the matter created by God, to which he gave form by his craftsmanship. It is striking that most of His life was dedicated to this task….” (LS, 98) The Catechism continues: “In work, the person exercises and fulfills in part the potential inscribed in his nature. The primordial value of labor stems from man himself, its author and its beneficiary. Work is for man, not man for work. Everyone should be able to draw from work, the means of providing for his life and that of his family, and of serving the human community.” (CCC, 2428) Consider then, in what you do, given a moral rightness and that much of it seems silent or uneventful, that it is in union with that work that Our Lord did, and which is a manifestation in some way to His Spirit and the mission He has given to each us and how we bring His Presence into the midst of our world. Phase II: Parish Center for our Parish Family ± Growing in Faith, Building Together ± Next weekend at and after all Masses, our Building Campaign for the new Parish Center will begin, running through December 2019. As I have mentioned, there are many examples of the great need for additional space for faith formation and community activities, among them me scheduling space for where to host an upcoming adult formation series, our parish staff then asking me, “what should we cancel?” as every room is booked! In beginning this great endeavor of a Parish Center, we do so as a parish family. Our family is Catholic in the best sense of the term. Recall we use that term in the Life of the Church to reference the Mystical Body of all those who are disciples of Our Lord, following His with their life, asking that His Life be theirs here and for all eternity. As such, our Cathedral parish family comprises people, literally from all over the world, walks of life, vocations and who serve Our Lord in varied ways. As a family, we know that what we do as part of the family, serves its life now and its future. We also know that to do that, it takes all we regularly do for our family, plus the sacrifices we do out of love for our family, to help them prosper and reach the potential Our Lord places in every human soul. I ask you to begin then with me, to prayerfully consider the sacrifice you can make for our family toward this goal we have not only set for ourselves, but that we truly need. Together we will succeed and in doing so, together we will continue to give glory where in it due: all things on behalf of the Holy Name of Jesus. More to come, but kindly add this effort to your intentions, as it is mission essential for us as a parish as we continue to grow in Our Lord and how He invites us to serve His purposes. Phase II: Sacred Heart Campus Improvements ± Growing in Faith, Building Together ± Recently completed was a comprehensive engineering study on the faith formation and school building on our Sacred Heart campus, listing priorities and anticipated CapEx improvements that will be needed to this structure over the next 20 years. Chief among these needs and as expected, is the replacement of all the HVAC units and controls, which we will be incorporating into our Phase II improvements in our Building Campaign, in addition to planned technology upgrades in software and classroom screens. Each of these are updates which reflect our stewardship of these important places in our parish history, now entrusted to our care, and which we now use for all of our prayer, formation and activities associated with the mission of our parish. Phase I: Athletic Fields Update ± Growing in Faith, Building Together ± As you know, our first new improvement to our Cathedral campus will be our athletic fields, which remain in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having several months ago received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We are again expecting the Building Permit from the City of Raleigh this week, with construction, led by Clancy and Theys, set to begin directly following when we obtain the permit. The building process will be about 3 months, with completion anticipated later in Fall 2019. Thank You for All your Prayers and Condolences ± My great gratitude for your prayers and condolences to me, my stepmother, Johanna Brockman and my sisters and family on the death of my dear Dad on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 in Chicago. We were blessed to celebrate his 97th birthday on August 4th, but then his health took a dramatic turn and he is now with my Mom (Martha Brockman), commended to Our Lord for all eternity. Kindly keep Dad (Dean Brockman) among your intentions, as well is my family and me during this time of mourning. It is in these times that we truly are renewed by the hope we have in Christ in and through our Catholic faith and also the great blessing we have to be part of a parish family, who loves and prays for the needs of all. Thank you!

The 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

L(,-$". %# ,/ W%$1 First ReadingSir 3:1718, 20, 2829

My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts. Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not. The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs, and an attentive ear is the joy of the wise. Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms atone for sins.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial PsalmPs 68:45, 67, 1011

R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. The just rejoice and exult before God; they are glad and rejoice. Sing to God, chant praise to his name; whose name is the LORD. R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsaken; he leads forth prisoners to prosperity. R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance; you restored the land when it languished; your flock settled in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy. R. God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Take my yoke upon you, says the Lord, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

 Gospel Lk 14:1, 714

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.

He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

For the 12p Mass:

Second Reading Heb 12:1819, 2224a

Brothers and sisters: You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them. No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all,

God leads forth prisoners to prosperity. Psalm 68:7

God is very concerned about God’s children who end up in prison. As Jesus begins his public life, he quotes from Isaiah 61:1, which records that the Spirit of God had anointed his servant “to proclaim liberty to the captives” and it is a recurring theme almost to the end of his ministry as we read in Matthew 25:36 “in prison and you visited me.” This concern does not end with Jesus’ death because in the Letter to the Hebrews 13:3, we are reminded to “continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” Prisoners were seen as “the least” among those in society and how we treat the marginalized and powerless is what matters to God.

Biblical stories illustrate an ageold problem: Not everyone imprisoned is guilty of genuine wrongdoing. Look at Jesus. Not only was he imprisoned unjustly, but he died in a statesanctioned death penalty. However, I digress. Of course, not everyone in prison is innocent of the crime to which they were convicted, but as prisons and imprisonment are consistent themes throughout the Bible, concern about prisons and prison ministry ought to run more powerfully throughout churches.

This brings me to the reason I am writing today. In the last many months, it has come to my attention through one of our parishioners, Meriel Brodie, that none of the women’s prisons in Raleigh are airconditioned while Central Prison for men is. Can you imagine what it must be like on these extremely hot days? This is also the situation in other prisons for men and women throughout NC. To add to the insult, the local animal shelter ended their program to bring dogs to the women’s prison because they considered the lack of airconditioning “inhumane” for the dogs!

Not getting a response from local media on this issue, I have now written Gov. Cooper. I am asking for you to do the same. Contact the media; email our governor; if you know anyone that could make this issue rise to the surface, please do so. We had hoped to have a “fan” on this before summer had ended but without success. Please remember the women in prison, some of them pregnant, some of them older women, and the guards who must do their jobs under these conditions.

Humility is often misunderstood as feeling inferior about ourselves and carrying around feelings of unworthiness. For many, humility is not considered a strength of character but a negative attribute and sign of weakness. Conversely, in fact, authentic humility is found in the person who is firmly grounded in reality, able to be honest with him or herself, and in right relationship with others and God. A humble person understands his or her place in life and who they are. While placing themselves at the service of others, they are comfortable in their own skin and able to step aside and let others go first.

Amén.  a oír nunca.

¡No!
