From the Pastor’s Desk: Karl Barth, the great 20th century Calvinist theologian, would wake up early in the morning, read the newspaper, and stare at a painting by Grunewald called Crucifixion. Jesus is hanging from the cross, apparently dead, while Mary and others morn. John the Baptist, holding the Scriptures and leaning away from Christ, is pointing to Jesus on the Cross. Before he would teach theology or write in his famous work Church Dogmatics, Karl Barth would meditate on this painting, particularly on John the Baptist. He said that, as a Christian (whether a theologian, pastor, teacher, mother, doctor, storekeeper, etc.), our job is to be the finger (and only the finger), of John the Baptist. The only thing we should do – indeed, the only thing we can do – is simply point to Jesus on the cross. This scene painted by Grunewald is the sum of all history, from Creation in the past to eternity. And we are that finger, and within that finger rests the weight of salvation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------Mother Teresa relates this incident from her life. Once a man came to the home for the dying in Kalighat, and just walked straight into the ward. Mother Teresa was sitting there. A while later the man came to Mother and said to her, “I came here with so much hate in my heart; hate for God and hate for man. I came here empty and embittered, and I saw a Sister giving her wholehearted attention to that patient there and realized that God still lives. Now I go out a different man. I believe there is a God and he loves us still.” That sister paved the way for God in that embittered man’s life. John the Baptist, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah was the voice that was making the way straight for the Lord. He facilitated the coming of Jesus. He paved the way for Christ’s coming by his austere life, preaching and death. ----------------------------------------------------------------------Some employees bought their boss a gift for his birthday. Before opening the gift, the boss shook it slightly, and noticed that it was wet in the corner. Touching his finger to the wet spot and tasting it, he asked, "A bottle of wine?" His employees replied, "No." Again, he touched his finger to the box and tasted the liquid. "A bottle of scotch?" "His employees replied again, "No." Finally the boss asked, "I give up. What is it?" His workers responded, "A puppy." ----------------------------------------------------------------------A little boy was kneeling beside his bed with his mother and grandmother and softly saying his prayers, "Dear God, please bless Mummy and Daddy and all the family and please give me a good night's sleep." Suddenly he looked up and shouted, "And don't forget to give me a bicycle for my birthday!!" "There is no need to shout like that," said his mother. "God isn't deaf." "No," said the little boy, "but Grandma is." 2

Everyday Stewardship

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

What power lies in a name? Have you ever met a "David," "Holly," or "Jack" and said, "They don't look like a David, Holly, or Jack"? Some"mes our name actually adds something to our person. Peculiar people some"mes have peculiar names. Some people of tremendous strength have names that we deem strong as well. Some"mes we give nicknames to people because of some a%ributes they exhibit. In the Bible, names mean a lot. Saul changes his name to Paul when he converts. Adam means "man," as in the first man. Eve means "to live" or "to breathe." Elizabeth took great care to name her son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not understand why such a unique name not found in their lineage. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah. We have our bap"smal names, our surnames, our Confirma"on names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Chris"an. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Chris"an looks like. Unfortunately, too o&en those who bear this name don't resemble the characteris"cs embodied in the name. Simply, a Chris"an looks like Christ. A Chris"an acts like Christ. A Chris"an truly is Christ to a world that seeks to uncover the true meaning of his name. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

On June 29, 2018,

VATICAN CORNER Pope Francis will

create 14 new cardinals and as before, they come from all over the world, including, this "me, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Madagascar, Pakistan, Peru, Portugal, and Poland. Every year, Francis has been selec"ng new cardinals and many have come from the outskirts and from the o&en overlooked dioceses, and some"mes from where Catholics are a small minority. According to Francis the places of origin of the new cardinals shows the “universality of the Church, that con"nues to preach the merciful love of God throughout the earth.” Eleven of the new cardinals are under the age of 80 and will therefore be eligible to vote for a new pope when the "me comes. Francis created three new cardinals that are above the age of 80 to honor them for their service to the Church. One new cardinal will be Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the Almoner of the Office of Papal Chari"es, who is Francis’s chief aid for helping Rome’s homeless and poor. When the new cardinals are inducted the total number of cardinals will be 227 and of them 125 will be under the age of 80. Pope Francis’ selec"on process has broken with tradi"on, and some dioceses that normally have cardinals no longer do. He is building a genuinely global church where ecclesias"cal power is not concentrated so much in Europe. Cardinals elect the pope, but that is a job they rarely perform. Their primary duty is to serve as advisors and assistants to the pope. Whatever else a cardinal may be doing, like heading a diocese or leading a Va"can congrega"on, he can always be called by the pope to do something else that is needed. The Code of Canon Law required that to be eligible to be a cardinal, an appointee must be a priest, and if he is not a bishop, then he must be consecrated a bishop, however the pope can make excep"ons. Pope John Paul II made an excep"on in 2001, making Jesuit theologian Avery Dulles a cardinal. Some theologians have argued that the College of Cardinals should contain laypeople of both sexes. Popes through their selec"ons or their withholding of appointments send important signals about their values and hopes for the Church. Pope Francis is trying to ensure that those who elect his successor are humble, spiritual men, commi%ed to “a church of the poor and for the poor,” a church that is “a field hospital” and puts mercy at the heart of its mission. He wants a missionary church” that reaches out to the peripheries of the world, a church devoid of clericalism, and involves the whole people of God. In an interview last year, Pope Francis said he hoped that by the end of his pon"ficate “the college of cardinals would be truly catholic.” As of now, Pope Francis has selected 47 percent of the voter-cardinals, just shy of a majority. With a few more years, Pope Francis may be able to guarantee that his legacy is not lost. Sources: cruxnow.com, uscatholic.org, ny"mes.com, americamazine.org, poli"co.eu

Ques!on: June 24 celebrates the feast of the Na!vity of Saint John the Bap!st. How was that date chosen and why?

Answer: The date set for John the Bap"st's birth only came into existence once the date to celebrate Jesus' birth was set. Evidence shows that by the middle of the fourth century Chris"ans were celebra"ng the birth of Jesus around December 25. No one at that "me knew when Jesus was born, but the date seemed to Sunday 12:15 PM be selected to counter the Roman fes"val to the sun god. Raymond Ynayan † Once December 25 had been selected for the birth of Jesus, a number of other Sunday 2:00 PM dates could be set, using the biblical evidence at hand. When the angel appeared Nelson Guerra (cumpleanos) to Mary and she conceived, her cousin, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Bap"st, Guillermina Zamora (cumpleanos) was in her sixth month. If Jesus was born on December 25, then he had to be conEmilio Silva † (6 meses aniversaro) ceived nine months before, on March 25. If Elizabeth was then in her sixth month, Angelina Torres Ramirez † then John the Bap"st was due three months later on June 25. (1st aniversario) Then why June 24? A rather convincing reason stems from John's witness in Paula & David Cruz † John's Gospel. There John the Bap"st says that Jesus must increase and he, John, Animas del Purgatorio † Juan Valazquez ( † cumpleanos) must decrease. The other Gospels also have John point to Jesus and not himself as the chosen one of God. In making John's birth a day less than Jesus' full nine Sunday 6:00 PM months, the Chris"an community communicated this Gospel reality in its liturgical Family Castro-Hernandez (accion de gracia) calendar. Thus the Chris"an community con"nued to highlight John's mission and ministry. Maybe we could strive toward that same mission in our own lives. Ana Maria Ceja †
