21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A message from our Administrator_____________ My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Last week we heard Bishop Kevin Vann address the awful and shameful sexual scandals that are plaguing the Catholic Church and what he, as our local shepherd, is doing to prevent these heinous acts from happening in our Diocese (please see Bishop’s letter in the August 19 issue of our bulletin at sticypress.org/home/bulletins). The recent Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report and the media are right to point out the sins and crimes of those who are responsible. These people are accountable to the law and to God. What the media failed to point out and what many people do not realize, however, is that the Catholic Church has made drastic changes in dealing with the issue of sexual abuse since June 2002 by implementing The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter is a comprehensive set of procedures established by the USCCB addressing allegations of sexual abuse of minors by both Catholic clergy and laity (http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/child-and-youth-protection/charter.cfm). The Charter also includes guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability, and prevention of future acts of abuse. It was revised in 2005, 2011, and 2018. The Charter directs action in all the following matters: • Creating a safe environment for children and young people; • Healing and reconciliation of victims and survivors; • Making prompt and effective response to allegations; • Reporting to, and cooperating with civil authorities; • Disciplining offenders; • Providing for means of accountability for the future to ensure the problem continues to be effectively dealt with. As Administrator of St. Irenaeus Church, I take seriously the responsibility to create the safest environment possible for us to live in and to practice our faith, especially for our precious young people. I think it is important for you to know that all of our parish staff, schoolteachers, catechists, and volunteers who work with minors are fingerprinted and background -checked and are required to complete safe-environment training. The topic of sexual abuse and appropriate boundaries is also incorporated into our Parish School and Faith Formation Program curriculum. In every age, the Church has to deal with sin and evil. What is most hurtful and damaging about these sexual abuse scandals is that those who are closest to us, those who are supposed to represent Jesus to us, perpetrated the evil. We may not completely eradicate the evil of sexual abuse from the Church and society, but let us always be vigilant and do everything in our power to prevent it. Fr. Binh Nguyen

O God of consolation, we come to you reeling from the latest revelation of our human, broken church. Priests, bishops, and other leaders to whom we entrusted our souls and the lives of our children have failed us in their most essential duties. We are beyond hurt; we are devastated; we are heartbroken; we are angry. We know that every corner of our church has somehow been stained by these sins. Hear our anguished cries today, O Lord, as we weep for our church. We need you now more than ever. Help us feel your presence in these difficult days. Make your justice known among us, that these grievous wrongs may be addressed. Help us to have hope in your steadfast love, and lead us one day to the healing that we so desperately crave. We ask this in the name of the One who suffered on the cross for the sins of all, your Son, Jesus Christ, who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen. AUGUST 26, 2018

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. REFLECTION After presenting a difficult teaching, Jesus asks the disciples, “Does this shock you?” (v. 61). Shouldn’t the entirety of our faith shock us? It definitely shocks me. There are distinct moments where the hugeness of our faith comes down on me in a very real and overwhelming way. This week’s readings share stories of faith, of choosing God in spite of confusion or doubt. In the Gospel accounts, there are twenty-seven instances in which the disciples were confused or did not understand Jesus’ teaching. However, we can see in John’s account that Simon Peter has faith that Jesus has “the words of eternal life” (v. 68), regardless of whether or not the Apostles understand every word that he preaches. The Apostles tried their best to interpret the Word in their lives, and so do we.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY— Grades 9-12

ACTION This week, I urge you to explore the lives of the saints. Consider selecting a few saints that you have heard of but don’t know much about, or even some unfamiliar saints. One of my favorite American Catholics on her way to possible canonization (being recognized as a saint) is Dorothy Day. Dorothy had a wayward journey to the Catholic faith, which made me realize how easy I had it growing up Catholic. She was a fantastic writer, social justice advocate, and worker for peace. Many of her writings are incredibly applicable to today’s social issues. Saints are those who answered Jesus’ call toward holiness, and we are urged to answer this call in small ways every day! JOURNALING QUESTIONS Who are some saints that you have a connection to? Why do you feel connected to them? How can you take some of the ideas and stories of the saints into your daily life? Is there someone in your own life that you recognize as “saintly,” or having saint-like qualities? What are these qualities? St. Irenaeus Parish School learning, believing, and serving…together ST. IRENAEUS TAKES PART IN CYPRESS FESTIVITIES On Saturday, July 28, St. Irenaeus parishioners showed their team spirit by taking part in the 37th Annual Cypress 5K and festival. A team of nearly 40 walkers and runners made up of parishioners, school students, and our parish priests, represented “Team St. Irenaeus” in the morning 5K and 10K walk/run. Later at the Cypress Festival, St. Irenaeus school and parish hosted information booths at the event. Our parish provided information about human trafficking and our school provided information on enrollment. We were very pleased to have so many of our school families, past and present, stop by to say, “Hello.”

St. Irenaeus parish provides many avenues for our parishioners to grow our faith in addition to attending Masses on the weekends. As a parish family, we provide Bible Studies, RCIA, Adult Confirmation, and Religious Education for our children, Youth Group and Confirmation, CANVAS (our new Young Adult Ministry), Grief Support, Divorce Care, Nuts & Bolts of our Catholic Faith and so many others. This week, I would like to highlight one program offered and available to all parishioners, young or old, married or single. This program is FORMED.ORG. FORMED.ORG is a Catholic on-line site that offers a wide variety of resources for everyone. The Augustine Institute, located in central Colorado, hosts FORMED.ORG. St. Irenaeus Parish subscribes annually to this service and as such, it is free to any parishioner. FORMED.ORG has radio dramas, movies about the lives of the saints, resources for teachers of religion and catechists. There are many short programs explaining the teachings of the Catholic Church. Do you want to know what the Catholic Church believes about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist? There a video that explains it in easy to understand language. Parents, are your children coming home and asking questions about something they learned in their religious education classes? Look on FORMED.ORG for help explaining it. Are you searching for deeper understanding of your faith? On the other hand, maybe you seek help answering questions from family, friends or co-workers about the Catholic Church. FORMED.ORG is an excellent resource. One particular video series I would like to mention in particular, “Opening the Word.” This video resource aims to help parishioners explore and gain a better, deeper understanding of the readings we hear proclaimed at the weekend Masses. There is a new video each week, generally 4-6 minutes in length, exploring and explaining each of the readings from the Old Testament, New Testament and the Gospel. FORMED.ORG is accessible from any computer, tablet, or smart phone. There are materials available in English and Spanish. Oh, and did I mention it is FREE to all parishioners? Simply log on to FORMED.ORG and enter the St. Irenaeus parish code: 2986fa and you are in. Peace to you and yours, Deacon Bruce

H.O.P.E. FOOD DISTRIBUTION On the first and third Saturday mornings our parking lot is abuzz with activity. The freezer door swings open and pickup trucks are loaded with treasures from Costco, Olive Garden, Pizza Hut and others. Produce is unloaded and young volunteers set up 25 tables to arrange food for distribution. Nearby 200 or more families are gathering and having a breakfast of juice, yogurt, rolls and coffee. As they eat and visit it is easy to overhear their comments…. “My husband works full time, but with 12 in the family we really need the help of the food bank to make it through the month. We are so grateful,” says a mother, carefully feeding her toddler some juice. One woman comments to another, “My husband has been out of work for two years. He gets a few jobs but even with my aide job three hours a day we wouldn’t be able to keep out bills paid without this help.” Her friend replies, “I went to another food bank where I was treated like dirt. Here everyone is nice. It’s like family. Anyone can fall on hard times.” A third woman chimes in, “I need the food, but I come to see the friends I’ve made here, tool” “I’ve been so desperate since I live in my car. I wish I’d known about this sooner.” says a man with his teenage son. A couple talks about their struggle, “We work as many hours as we can get and when it’s enough we don’t come, but with seven teenaged boys money is tight and I don’t know what we’d so without this help.” “When my husband died, my income went down to almost nothing. I don’t know what I’d do without the food bank.” SAVE THE DATE FOR A FUN DINNER DANCE ON NOVEMBER 10TH. BENEFITS HOPE!

21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
