Paul’s Ponders In my daily devotional I am reading through John again. I found a very interesting analysis by Daniel Egan in his blog on 1/29/2009, (https:// bibletidbits.blogspot.com/2009/01/gospel-of-john-and-new-creation.html), in which he compares creation and John. Both Genesis and John start with “In the Beginning…” John 1:4, 5 describes the distinction between light and dark (“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.”). Genesis 1:1-5 describes the separation of light from darkness. John 1:29 - 34 (the next day) Jesus is introduced by John who compares water and spirit baptism. The second day of creation (Gen 1:6-8) God separates the water. The next day (John 1:35-42) Jesus renames Simon as Cephas or “Rock”. On the third day of creation dry land appeared (Gen 1:9-13). The next day (John 1:43-51) Nathanel meets Jesus and Jesus describes the ascending and descending of angels. The creation account describes the creation of heavenly lights (Genesis 1:14-19). John 2, “On the third day…” Jesus is at a wedding. This would be three days later or the 7th day. Mr. Egan says that this corresponds to the covenant God made with Adam and Eve. He continues to say that in Numbers 19:11-13 a person who touches someone who is dead must be cleansed with water on the 3rd and the 7th day before they can join the community. It may be a prelude to Jesus being cleansed from the dead and rising to new life, establishing the new community for fellowship with the church. “You have saved the best until now,” (John 2:10) refers to the wine we drink at the Lord’s Supper, Jesus’ blood. The more you dwell on God’s word, the more fascinating it becomes. Don’t just read your Bible, dwell on it. 1Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. Psalm 1:1-3
