I’ve been on a diet for several months. It is one of those diets where you can’t eat anything sweet or good. It has high protein, but I get to eat things like cauliflower rice. I began pondering, with all the weird diets people eat, how do we stay alive? When the pioneers were crossing the nation, they had no refrigerators and few places to get any supplies. Their food had to be non-perishable. Food would be supplemented by anything shot on the journey. Nothing was wasted. Everything was eaten or used; tongue, heart, brain, intestines… Some of the world still eats these items that we may disdain, and they call it delicacies. Even the breads were heavier and thicker as any type of leaven was hard to find. Plants and roots were picked up as they became available including yucca root in the southwest. It is amazing how God has created out bodies to subsist on such a wide variety of food. God can take a brown cow and make white milk to put red hair on my granddaughter. We eat only meat or only vegetables and still do fine. We can eat grasshoppers and snails, ants and beetles and remain healthy. We are wonderfully made. We can choose to eat many different things to survive. We can decide to eat bread or not, but the one food we cannot ignore is the “bread of life.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
