June 18, 2017-Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” 1 CORINTHIANS 10:17 As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Let’s help each other get there!

A Listening Presence

Everyone at times has difficulties and needs a caring companion who will listen, empathize and be a reminder of a caring faith community. St. Gabriel BeFriender ministry is not a ministry of “doing” but of “being.” BeFrienders provide care through a listening presence to anyone experiencing grief, loss, transition or other cares. To request a visit, contact the parish office at (952) 935-5536.

SMALL GROUP MEDITATION

June 18, 2017, The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a; Psalm 147; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17; John 6:51-58 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ celebrates so rich a mystery, it deserves not one day, but a life time of contemplation and action! Today we celebrate the very truth that sets us apart as Catholic Christians; namely, that Jesus is truly present body and blood, soul and divinity, in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. It should not surprise us that many Catholics find this one of the most difficult teachings of the Church to believe and live by. Even in the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6, John recounted twice that the Jews disputed Jesus’ words, once doubting that he was indeed the divine Son of God (John 6:41), and again misunderstanding his meaning when he stated clearly, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51) One of the reasons the Jews struggled with this teaching is the verb Jesus used for “eat.” In his discourse, Jesus switched from the more common word for eating to a verb that means “to chew or gnaw” much like animals consume their food. This shocked his listeners, and made a very radical point about what Jesus was demanding. He was not asking the Jews, and is not asking us, to see the Eucharist as a symbol, a sign of his historical sacrifice. He is demanding that we express our faith in him as the Redeemer and Savior in a very physical and real way, by eating his body and blood, and participating in the eternal sacrifice. Paul explains this further as he states, “The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?” We do not only remember, we participate in Christ’s body, the very body that suffered, died and rose. Once we begin to understand the radical offering Jesus makes in the Eucharist, we are able to respond with the adoration, praise, awe and humility that are fitting each and every time we receive Holy Communion at Mass or spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We prepare for our participation by examining our lives for any sin that would tarnish this participation, and if necessary, go to confession or refrain from receiving communion. We pray to the Holy Spirit to deepen our faith in this mystery, and kindle a fire of love for Jesus in us. We go out, strengthened by the very real presence of God in us, to share Him with all others. For more information or to sign up for a small group contact Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949. Reflection Questions:  Reread the Bread of Life Discourse in John 6: 35-59 and imagine yourself in the scene. What part of Jesus’ sermon gives you comfort and peace? What part shocks you or confuses you?  This passage has been interpreted in two ways, one metaphorically and one literally and sacramentally.  Discuss how the passage can be interpreted as an invitation to faith (metaphorically), and as an invitation to the Eucharist (literally and sacramentally). How do we as Catholics interpret it? How can the two ways work together? How would you respond to someone who sees it only in the metaphorical way?  How do you respond to Jesus’ use of the word “to gnaw or chew” on his body? Why do you think you respond this way? What could God be trying to teach you by these words?  As Christians, our faith in Jesus must lead to action. How does your belief in Jesus’ real presence in the Eucharist direct your choices in your daily life?  Some recent studies have found that only 20% of US Catholics believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. If you feel comfortable, share with your group how you understand the Eucharist. Pray for each other to grow deeper in your belief and understanding of this great mystery.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains an entire section of teaching on the Eucharist. (Part II, Section II, Chapter One, Article 3). Spend some time this week reading this section, and then share with the group next week what new insights you learned. (It can be read for free online: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe/ catechism/catechism-of-the-catholic-church/index.cfm )  If you do not already participate in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, try to visit for a short time this week. The chapel at the St. Joseph campus is open to all during the day until late evening. Jesus is waiting for you.
