Divine Mercy

Divina Misericordia

Should we be a little easier on Thomas? The last few days have been a whirlwind. On Thursday, a Passover celebration went horribly awry as Jesus was betrayed and taken into custody for unstated crimes. Less than 24 hours later, the simple arrest has turned into a death sentence to be carried out that very afternoon. Most of the disciples fled, including Thomas. He would have heard of the events of Good Friday secondhand, in shock over the death of his Lord and Master. Then Sunday morning arrives with joy from a few disciples-Jesus is risen! But there is no persistent sight of him, only Mary Magdalene's quick moment in the garden and an empty tomb. Another day passes. The Apostles are gathered that Monday night, but Thomas is absent. He returns to a jubilant report of the risen Lord. Again, Thomas has seen nothing. The experience must have been surreal. Did Jesus really appear raised from the dead? Did he really suffer and die? Has all of this been some strange hoax? Desperate for an answer, Thomas insists, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." After his resurrection, Jesus' body--mangled and bloody from the crucifixion--is restored. Did it need the scars? A perfected body would have taught us one lesson: everything is renewed as it once was, the past erased. Jesus chooses another lesson, however. He retains his scars that we might know him. In the whirlwind of our lives, we make our own mistakes, our own betrayals and compromises. In the resurrected Jesus, we see a God who does not forget his own sorrow. We are invited to meet him--wound for wound--and place our hand on his own nail-scarred palm, the eternal sign of his everlasting mercy

From the Pastors Desk How does complete forgiveness of sins and punishment sound? Today, April 6 is Divine Mercy Sunday. (We handed out a novena on Good Friday.) During the course of Jesus' revelations to Saint Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. This Feast was granted to the Universal Church by Pope St. John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April 2000. In a decree dated 23 May 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that "throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come." I want to grant complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy (Diary 1109). The confession can be within twenty days prior. It is even greater than an indulgence and has less requirements. It is almost like another baptism. Concerning the Feast of Mercy Jesus said: Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 300) I want the image solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. (Diary 341) This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. (Diary 420) I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.* [our emphasis] On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699) So please prepare yourself for this great gift of mercy which comes from the Paschal Mystery (Christ’s death and resurrection) which we celebrate in Easter. Thanks. 6

Thank you so much to parishioner Tom Dedas who has designed and built for us an oak confessional. Now it is a fitting space for those who wish to confess behind the screen, kneeling; face to face is still an option. Tom delivered it to us on St. Joseph feast day, who of course was a carpenter, and just in time for our parish penance service where it got a lot of use. Thanks for sharing your gifts with our parish and with the Lord who will meet his people here in this sacrament.

Parish Counseling Services at MHT Parish Counseling Services are coming to Most Holy Trinity Have you ever felt the need to see a counselor who shares your faith? Sometimes in life, we hit road bumps or we notice habitual ways of thinking or acting that come from something that perhaps happened to us. A Christian Counselor can help us to let go of the past, see ourselves and situations more clearly, and to live with more freedom in the present. At our parish, we will soon be blessed to have a Catholic Counselor from Rejoice Counseling Apostolate. I assure you that the parish counselors from Rejoice believe in the importance of God’s grace to help bring us wholeness and will encourage the living out of the Catholic Faith for you or your marriage. They will begin offering counseling onsite at our parish in April. Our new Parish Counselor, Nick LaRocca, will also offer a special presentation the day after Divine Mercy Sunday. He’s going to speak about “Forgiveness: Called to Mercy” as he reminds us that these qualities are part of our everyday lives and we all need to forgive someone or be forgiven. He will teach us four steps to forgiveness. Please come join us and meet him on Monday, April 9th at 7:00pm in _the Church. To learn more about our new parish counseling services or to schedule an appointment with the counselor, go to MyParishCounseling.com/ mhtangleton or call (844) 295-3167. I hope this opportunity will bring hope and healing to individuals, couples, and families throughout our parish! - Fr. Victor Perez
