EDUCATING MUSEUM PROFESSIONALS FOR DIGITAL STEWARDSHIP AND INNOVATION Shaping Access Conference Hamburg 2015 Joyce Ray, Ph.D. Program Coordinator and Faculty Digital Curation Certificate Program in Museum Studies Johns Hopkins University

about me • US National Archives & Records Administration, 1988-98 • Institute of Museum & Library Services, 1998-2011 • Visiting professor, University College London, Humboldt University, 2011-14 • Lecturer in digital preservation and digital curation in JHU museum studies, 2011-present / digital curation program coordinator, 2014-present

Master of Arts in Museum Studies & Graduate Certificate in Digital Curation

Launched 2008 Mostly online (Blackboard) 44 states / 10 countries 21-68 age range 70% currently in museums 9% have another graduate degree » 400 graduates

Digital Curation Jobs in Museums are Emerging Job Postings on Museum-L: – Collections, Data & Imaging Assistant – Digital Archivist – Digital Asset Management Specialist – Digital Collections Manager – Digital Content Manager – Digital Projects Manager

Museums Need Digital Curation Skills  Museums need staff with digital curation skills  Employers would prefer to hire “their own” (people with museum experience and understanding of the museum mission)—But they are hiring librarians and archivists instead

--2013 Digital Curation Summit, Washington DC

JHU Graduate Certificate in Digital Curation • Launched 2014 with dual degree option (either standalone or combined with MA in museum studies) • 6 courses: 5 core courses + 1 elective • Online with one internship with onsite requirement • Currently about 30 students • Most are new students also entering the MA program

Digital Curation Certificate » 5 core courses: • Digital Preservation* • Foundations of Digital Curation* • Managing Digital Information in Museums • On-ground internship • Research course

» 1 elective chosen from the museum studies curriculum *may be taken as elective for the MA

Dual MA in Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Digital Curation Students in the dual program can count two courses toward both credentials for a total of 14

What is curation?

What does a curator do? • Manager, overseer • Keeper (of museum collections, of biological specimens, etc.)

• Interpreter • Selector (in archival terms, an “appraiser” who decides what to keep based on its likely future research value) from the Latin “curare”—to take care --Wikipedia

Digital Curation:

the planning and management of digital assets over their full lifetime, from conceptualization through active use and presentation to long-term preservation in a repository for future re-use.

Data Curation Life Cycle Model

--Digital Curation Centre, UK

Key Concept Digital curation deals with the entire life cycle of digital data. Future users (including internal staff as well as external researchers) will need to know why and how these assets were created, and the context of how they were used, in order to use them effectively. They will need information for discovery (metadata), as they may not even know that these assets exist.

Museums need digital curators to curate not only digitized images of physical collections but also born-digital collections (e.g., digital media art) and research data Core Museum Functions (US Office of Personnel Mgt.): 1. Research 2. Collections 3. Exhibits 4. Education

Collections Research is Ongoing

Potawatomi Blouse, Back http://www.kansasheritage.org/pbp/art/blouse.html --Kansas Heritage Group

Challenges  There is a long tradition of museum research, but not of managing or sharing research data  Collection documentation is often not recognized as research data  The long-term benefits of open access may not be recognized

Knowledge and Skills Required Across LAMs (Libraries, Archives & Museums)  Familiarity with standards and practices that facilitate interoperability and preservation  Familiarity with general and specialized metadata appropriate to the discipline or institution

 General organizational, project management and communication skills; ability to work in a team of people with different areas of expertise --2013 Digital Curation Summit, Washington DC

Data Curation Curriculum “Framework” in US Schools of Library & Information Science Typically includes: • Digital Preservation – emphasis on institutional planning • Foundations of Digital Curation – focus on the “front end” e.g., metadata, interoperability, sharing • Specialized courses depending on program, e.g., lifecycle (archival) focus, or disciplinary focus (most often science but humanities is growing) • Internship (placement) – hands-on work experience

JHU Curriculum 6 courses: 3 basic and 3 customized 1. Digital Preservation 2. Foundations of Digital Curation 3. Managing Digital Information in Museums _____________________________________________ 4. Elective OR 2nd Internship 5. Internship — full semester course, 120 hours working in a museum or related organization & completion of a project (possibly remotely) 6. Research Paper – full semester course, ideally builds on internship

The Basics • Digital Preservation—archival principles, institutional planning • Foundations of Digital Curation—interoperability, metadata for the arts, sciences and humanities, sharing through aggregation • Managing Digital Information in Museums—hands-on work with common open-source software; curation of different types and formats of digital objects; planning for digital curation programs (the first two courses are prerequisites)

Elective Chosen from MA Curriculum Curriculum Clusters: » EDUCATION » EXHIBITIONS » COLLECTIONS » LEADERSHIP » TECHNOLOGY » DIGITAL CURATION

Internships Smithsonian Institution Office of Research Information

Internships Library of Congress

Internships Imperial War Museum London

Internships

The University of Texas at San Antonio, Special Collections

Research Course Objectives: • Demonstrate critical thinking and communication skills • Identify a problem or challenge in digital curation and discuss how it has been addressed as well as current trends or potential solutions; and • Become active participants in the digital curation and cultural heritage research communities (e.g., interviewing experts on their topic)
