In today’s red Friday folders you will find your child’s STAR test results from January. This is the 2nd of 3 times it will be administered this year. Your child took the Star Reading test during the week of January 8th and the Star Math test during the week of January 15th. Throughout the year, the scores are used to track individual student growth, provide placement recommendations for future language arts/math classes, curriculum planning and aid in identifying potential learning problems. This is the first year of implementation of this assessment and is considered a norming year. Students needs to establish a baseline to see growth.

Monday: Hot dog, carrot sticks, chilled fruit and chips Tuesday: Turkey sandwich, potatoe wedges, or hash brown, chilled fruit and mixed vegetables Wednesday: Chilli, WG roll, chilled fruit, steamed broccoli Thursday: Chicken patty sandwich w/ cheese, carrots, and chilled fruit/pudding Friday: Tacos soft/hard, steamed broccoli, chilled fruit, WW bread slice and jello

It is important to remember that it is typical to see fluctuations in scores from one test to another. As the test becomes more difficult throughout the year, it is normal to see ups and downs in your child’s score. Other factors can influence an individual test score, such as illness, outside stressors, sleep and motivation on the day of the test. Every student approaches test taking differently so these results are only part of the picture for your child’s learning. JPIIA will administer the Star test again in May to see overall growth for the year.

John Paul II Academy is a Catholic school providing a faith-based education that embraces the teachings of the Gospel in order to develop the whole child.

If your child is in grades 4K, 5K, or 1, they took the Early Literacy Test, on the report you will find their scaled score out of a possible 900. The report gives some great suggestions on how to continue supporting your child’s reading development at home. Grades 2 8 took both the Star Reading and Star Math test. Scaled Scores are out of a possible 1400 and there is additional information on how to help your child continue growing in both reading and math skills at home.

We exist in partnership with the parents, parishes and the community to meet the needs of each individual student.

If you have questions about these results please contact your child’s teacher.

Mission Statement

We will help each student develop life skills for cooperation with and involvement in the community

based on respect for God, one’s self, and society.

Blessings, Mrs. Schumacher and Mrs. Klein

Counseling Corner 1/22/18 Mrs. Klein The School Counseling office has been a busy place in the month of January. We have begun a unit entitled Emotion Management in the Elementary School. The goal of this unit is to help students manage their strong emotions before they escalate into negative consequences. We will be discussing how to handle anxiety, anger, and frustration, as well as handling put-downs, resisting revenge and avoiding assumptions. The students are learning how their brains and bodies are affected by strong feelings. Ask your child what part of their brain controls emotions and what part helps their brain get back under control. Finally, through our Second Step lessons, all the students are learning the following steps for Calming Down: Stop, Name Your Feeling and Calm-Down. The following calming down strategies are being emphasized: belly breathing, counting, and positive self-talk. In the Junior High we have had a meaningful lesson defining rumors and gossip; we then discussed how to deal with these problems if you hear them or are the victim of rumors or gossip. We are also continuing our discussion of handling emotions and mindfulness. Finally, SCAN, the Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, program has presented safety lessons to our K4, K5, 2, and 4 students. Grade 6 will receive lessons in February. I look forward to seeing you at open house this weekend!

The virtue of the month in December was Faithfulness. Our Faithfulness definition was “to be loyal to your beliefs and the people you love.” Here are the students that were nominated by their teachers and their peers for the “Character Club” as examples of the virtue of Faithfulness in the month of December. These students received a certificate and had their names read over the announcements as well as included in a display called “The JPIIA Wall of Virtue.”

The December Character Club recipients are as follows: 4K: Analy G. and Logan P. 5K: Erin M. and Christian S-M 1: Aylin H. and Carlos D. 2: Sarai V. and Carlos R-G 3: Nancy A. and Anthony W. 4. Tanya G. and Angel M-P 5: Isabella B. and Joshua J. 6: Macieana T. and Marvelle W. 7: Jalyna J. and Gustavo V. 8: .Anne H. and Zamarion D.

Uniform Update/ Actualización de Uniformes Please note: uniform items may only be purchased through Lands End. There are no other approved vendors! Lands End has the only items approved for the school logo. Please do not take our school crest logo and have it applied to other vendor's items. We appreciate your cooperation on this very important matter. Thank you! Please contact Lisa Schumacher, Director of Development, with any uniform questions. [email protected] or (262) 637-2012.

Think about this! If your child is tardy just 5 minutes per day, they will have missed over 2 full school days in a year. Students that come to school regularly and on time keep up with daily assignments, take quizzes and tests on time, and have the opportunity to hear explanations completely. Good attendance also teaches the valuable life skills of responsibility, self-discipline and persistence. Research has shown that good attendance helps students have a better attitude toward school, leading to better behavior and more positive social relationships.

Remember, the 3 classes with the best on time percentage and the 3 classes with the best attendance percentage at the end of January will receive a reward from Mrs. Schumacher!
