National UM Developers Gathering Forth Worth, TX December 7-9, 2011 Listed below are notes we took on various presentations during the Church Developers gathering in Forth Worth, TX: Building Healthy Multi-Cultural Congregations – Mark DeYmaz of Mosaic Church in Little Rock, AK www.mosaicchurch.net Web site of the congregation founded in 2001 www.mosaix.info Web site to catalyze the movement and to enlist, equip and establish emerging leaders with a passion to develop diverse communities of faith in the 21st century. Mark’s story is that he was on a track to be a lead pastor of a large and perhaps largely white congregation. He felt an increasing calling to found a multi-ethnic (mosaic) church to serve populations of inner Little Rock that were not being served. The congregation lives its life in a former K-mart shopping center and one of the insights and trends that Mark sees is the need for congregations to develop funding sources (partnerships, rentals, grants) which expand the financial base beyond member giving; which is going to be increasingly hard to get and will not meet all the costs of doing ministry in any case. Mother/Daughter Churches – Adoption Model – Greg Ligon of the Leadership Network and one of the authors of: The Multi-site Church Revolution & A Multi-site Church Road Trip I.

Four Merger Models A. Rebirth Mergers: Struggling or dying church gets a second life being restarted under a stronger, vibrant and typically larger church. B. Adoption Mergers: A stable or stuck church that is integrated under the vision of a stronger, vibrant and typically larger church. C. Marriage Mergers: Two churches, both strong or growing that realign with each other under a united vision and NEW leadership configuration. (Co-pastors a challenging model and prone to problems, a succession to a new Sr. Pastor works best.) D. ICU Mergers: Two churches in trouble trying to turn their situation around by a merger. This is survival driven and usually fails.

II.

Important Merger Questions: A. B. C. D. E. F.

Is it possible? Is it feasible? (Costs involved and where will income be found?) Is it desirable? Can we accomplish more together than separately? Is the community better served? Is the Kingdom of God extended?
