REFLECTIONS ON LIFE BLESSING OF BOOTS LED TO COMPLETE HEALING “How can I help you?” I asked, responding to the doorbell. There stood a stranger, quite short, strikingly underweight, dressed in dark, cowboy-style attire, and holding in his right hand a pretty pair of cowgirl boots. As I puzzled whether to open the door wider, about to invite him in, he held the boots high for me to see. “I came for a boots blessing! My granddaughter needs these boots. They were stored away in my sister’s house where no one could even see them. When I came upon them, I knew immediately that they would be perfect for my granddaughter. I used to attend church here years ago, but I haven’t been here in many, many years. “I haven’t led a good life. In fact, I have neglected my health in several ways, especially drinking too much and smoking way too much, eventually leading to my being in the hospital about to die. The doctors were trying to bring me out of a coma when I felt myself overhead looking down on the doctors and myself. Suddenly, there was a bright, almost blinding light outlining a shining person who approached me and said, ‘You will have to go back for now! Your time has not yet come!’” “Do you think that was your guardian angel watching over you and giving you vital instructions about your present illness and your immediate future?” “I don’t know what to think. But it is clear to me that I have to make some big changes in my life. I have to do a lot more

praying, getting closer to God while I have time. After all these years, I have to come back to church to give thanks and to give glory to God. Right now I want to have these boots blessed for my granddaughter. It is only a small beginning, but I feel strongly drawn toward God in my life.” Deeply moved, I asked him to hold the boots up while I invoked God’s special blessing on them, on the donor and his granddaughter, asking the good Lord that the granddaughter would be blessed with many beautiful years of wearing the boots with gratitude to her grandfather and to God who had spared her grandfather’s life. As my prayer drew to a conclusion, I sprinkled the boots and their donor with holy water. The gaunt gentleman smiled with huge satisfaction about the blessing. “Will I see you again? I do trust that you will stay in touch with me.” “Yes, if God gives life, I hope to see you again and to stay in touch as well.” Almost as in a dream, the man shook my hand, thanked me profusely and eased out the door. After decades of being conspicuous by his absence, boots in hand, he had made his way back to a church contact to request a boots blessing for his granddaughter and to recount his personal experience of a near-death episode that contained a strong pull toward the brilliant light of afterlife, but finally the command to go back to his everyday life on earth until God called him home. It was clear that a deep healing had taken place in his body, mind, heart and very soul. It takes a while to recover from such an encounter. Deep in thought, I closed the door, sat down and scribbled a few notes,

leaving them where I could access them at will. Would you believe that a cleanup freak made them disappear? Well, that was not the first time that I had to begin from scratch and bits of memory. Nevertheless, the sacramental of a boots blessing for a granddaughter had left a profound impression on me. Patently more than an excuse for recounting to me the episode of his stunning out-of-body experience, the gaunt stranger placed great value on having the boots blessed for his granddaughter. He all but admitted that his need for getting the boots blessed was his ticket back to the church. His was by no means an isolated experience with a sacramental becoming the key to the door of the church and closeness to God. The most common sacramental, of course, is holy water – blessed water – that is used at the entrances of Catholic churches, in bottles at home and in places such as cars. It is highly significant that some non-Catholics come to the church requesting a bottle of holy water. Other common sacramentals are palms blessed on Palm Sunday, the rosary that is such a beloved and widely-used tool of prayer, and Saint Christopher statues that are prayerfully placed in cars by Catholics and some nonCatholics alike. Wonderfully, the most fascinating of all sacramentals are wife and husband who are the matter and form of the sacrament of holy matrimony. As water is the matter to baptism, so are their bodies the matter to marriage and their exchange of vows is the form. Therefore, they are the ministers of the sacrament, obligated to share the sacrament in every word and act daily, hourly, each moment of their lives.

“God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD

Motherhood does not die with the loss of a child. This innate, God-given sense of love continues in the hearts of those who have lost a child through abortion, only now that sense is broken, bound with grief and despair. -Excerpt from “Lost Motherhood,” by Anne Bell
