REFLECTIONS ON LIFE WHEN WILL YOU GET YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENT? RMS Queen Mary was beginning her last decade of service in 1957, soon to be stilled with other luxury transoceanic liners by large, swift jetliners, one of which could transport in just four days what a Queen Mary could carry in four and a half days. My first cruise was the big one aboard the Queen Mary sailing from New York to Cherbourg, France in early September of 1957. I was brash enough to sing the French National Anthem (La Marseillaise) at the top of my lungs for my sisters Veronica and Mary Agatha “Aggie” to hear. The sound carried well over the dock. My vote for crossing the Atlantic would still be a luxury liner – nowadays, the RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2) no less, with her predecessor docked permanently at Long Beach, California as a tourist attraction since 1967. After four years of Canon Law and Sacred Theology studies at the famous Gregorian University in Rome from September 1957 to August 1961, just as we had sailed in together on the Queen Mary, two of my classmates, Fathers John Berry and Robert Flinn, sailed with me from Genoa on the soon-to-be-retired MS Giulio Cesare back to New York. After studies in Rome, I was appointed to teach Canon Law and Moral Theology at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi 19611967, to teach at St. Stanislaus College-preparatory School in Bay St. Louis 1967-1969, to teach at Xavier University in New Orleans 1969-1980, to pastor: St. Martin de Porres

Church in Prairie View, Texas 1981-1984, St. Paul The Apostle Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana 1984-1988, St. Augustine Church in New Orleans, Louisiana 1990-2006, Our Mother Of Mercy Church in Fort Worth, Texas 2006-2015. And now, at 84 years and 5 months, the end of my sojourn is in sight, though the end could arrive anytime from now to 15 or 20 years hence. It profits neitherme nor anyone else to speculate about the future, since only God knows that. All I can do is give God a helping hand by continuing my strictlyvegan food regimen of 19 years and 3 months, with sufficient sleep and exercise, plus discipline of my emotions. Being assigned to a church parish is the equivalent of being assigned to a new family in the form of a Faith Community. A getting-to-know-you start becomes a wrenching experience as one tears himself away from a Faith Family/ Community with whose members he has bonded closely for several or, in this case, nine years. When I arrived at Our Mother Of Mercy June 1, 2006 at about 6:30 p.m., I bounced out of the U-Haul truck and looked to the east. As sporadic raindrops were putting an end to a 40-day drought, a brilliant rainbow appeared in the east and I quoted Genesis 9:13, “I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Once more, on a June 2015 Sunday after the 8:00 a.m., Mass, a fleeting bow appeared south-southeast of the church. It was time to leave, after a drought-breaking spring and the wettest-ever May in now-verdant Texas. After a roof-blowout celebration at the August 8-9 weekend Masses, I am to move

–much lighter than I arrived in Fort Worth – to St. Augustine Residence in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where I began my odyssey at the age of 13 in 1943. Without parish obligations to consume my time, I shall be at liberty to chronicle the lives and missions of the SVD brothers and priests in the U.S. Southern Province. Also, I shall have time to complete a couple of half-done books sitting in my computer. What is your assignment in life? To rear a family? First there is your overall assignment given you by God in your vocation/calling/ profession, among which the calling to be a single layperson is at times overlooked. The latter is a real God-given vocation for some. Witness the maiden aunt who helps the parents or, in some cases, rears a child whom no one else has the time, interest or resources to rear. Then there are individual assignments given you by superiors/supervisors at various levels of family, school, religion, business, recreation and social activities. For perhaps eight decades or so, we grace the good earth God has given us until the time comes for us to be covered by it. During our overall assignment/ vocation, we are called by God to do the Jesus arithmetic: when we share our sorrows, we divide them; when we share our joys, we multiply them until they explode into eternal joy. Thus, the joie de vivre of the Jesus arithmetic lightens all our burdens and pains, and multiplies and intensifies all our joys as we move from day to day during our priceless and adventurous stay here on earth. With so many Godsent, joy-filled, loving relatives and friends, we can say with gusto, “All this and heaven too!”

“God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD

THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven‑sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
