Reflecting on God’s Word

Is someone in your house going back to school? If so there are books and supplies to buy, schedules to plan, transportation to be arranged. There is the worry over new teachers and whether everything that was learned last year has been forgotten. But no matter. Most of the time the school year begins with a review. That’s good because sometimes we understand things better the second or third time we learn them. With the scriptures this Sunday all of us are going back to school. The series of selections from the Gospel of Mark and the letter of James that we begin this week will teach us one more time what it means to be a disciple. Lucky for us, since most of us can only learn this lesson if we hear and apply it on a daily basis. Today’s first reading also instructs us to “hear” and “observe” “the commandments of the Lord . . . that [we] may live” (Deuteronomy 4:1, 2). And the psalm reviews the basics: “The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord” (15:1a).

Long after deaconesses TREASURES FROM OUR disappeared, their TRADITION ministry was treasured Last week’s discussion and carried on by of the permanent religious women in diaconate and its consecrated life. It is restoration will lead clear that one of our inevitably to questions greatest treasures is the about “deaconesses,” vibrant engagement of something certainly under study as historians women in ministry over the centuries. What is and liturgists research our tradition’s treasures. not as clear is where our questions will lead. Today, there are some settings in which women —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Yet the question of ordination to the diaconate for women is complex. Yes, we have had deaconesses in our tradition. We know that they assisted with the baptism of women, and that ministries were entrusted to them. We also know that some early church councils took care to call them lay persons, and specifically forbade ordination. What confuses the picture is that they may have been the wives of deacons, who, like the wives of

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2015 Humbly welcome he word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. ————-James 1:21b KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What will we do? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
