Between 1 January and 30 October 2016, 159,427 persons arrived to Italy by sea, compared to 140,987 sea arrivals in the first ten months of 2015. This represents a 13% increase compared to last year. October arrivals this year (27,384) are higher than numbers recorded over the same period of 2015 (8,916) and 2014 (15,279). Last year, monthly arrivals had peaked in July, then slowly decreased to year’s end. In 2014, a peak in sea arrivals was observed in September, with numbers decreasing from October onward. In 2016, the highest number of monthly sea arrivals was registered in October, following a considerable decrease in September. UNHCR is investigating factors that could have led to the surge of arrivals in October.

Sea arrivals: top 5 nationalities by month 8,000 40,000

Sea arrivals originate mainly from sub-Saharan Africa. Between January and October 2016, 21% of all arrivals originated from Nigeria, followed by Eritrea (12%), Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia (each accounting for 7% of the total). Arrivals from Syria continue at a relatively low rate (0.6% of the total arrivals).

New arrivals are predominantly male. Like in previous years, women represent 14% of new arrivals so far this year, while accompanied children account for 1.3% of the total. Also, similarly to previous years, significantly more women have arrived this year from Nigeria, Somalia, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Eritreans (29%, 25%, 25%, 24% and 22% of arrivals from each country respectively). An increasing number of unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) arrived this year: 14% of new arrivals between January and October 2016 are UASC, as opposed to 7% in 2015. So far, these UASC originate most commonly from Eritrea, Gambia and Nigeria. At the end of October, Gambian and Nigerian UASC outnumbered Egyptian UASC. Eritrean UASC account for 18% of all Eritreans that have arrived by sea. Gambian UASC constitute 27% of all Gambian sea arrivals, while Nigerian UASC account for 8% of the all Nigerians that have arrived so far this year. 59% of all Egyptians that have arrived by sea in the above period are UASC.
