LENT at HOLY FAMILY CATHEDRAL

April 1, 2 & 3 7:00 pm each night Damon Owens

A Parish Lenten Mission

joytob.org

“The family: This is the place where the Theology of the Body and the Theology of Love are interwoven.”

What is “Theology of the Body”? “Theology of the Body” or “TOB” is how Pope St. John Paul II described a series of 129 short weekly talks he gave from September 1979 to November 1984. These talks on human love in God’s divine plan were drawn from a manuscript he had completed just before his elec on to the papacy. Rather than publish his reflec ons, he modified them to deliver to the weekly visitors to St. Peter’s Square for the tradi onal Wednesday Angelus Prayer and Addresses. The TOB is a biblical reflec on on the meaning of human embodiment as male and female in the beginning of Crea on, now in history, and forever in Heaven. The TOB invites us to ponder the mystery that connects us (and all of Crea on) with our Creator from the body to the union of man and woman, the union of Christ and the Church, upward into the very inner life of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Through the TOB, St. John Paul II asks and answers three fundamental human ques ons: “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, and “How do I live a life of

joytob is the new teaching ministry of Damon Owens dedicated to proclaiming the joy of being made in the image and likeness of God, male and female. Drawing on over twenty years of lectures, mo va onal speaking, wri ng, and TV/radio presenta ons, Damon joyfully acclaims the goodness, truth, and beauty of human sexuality and its deepest meaning fulfilled by men and women who freely choose motherhood and fatherhood through marriage or celibacy for the sake of Heaven. MID-LENT CHECK-IN God says to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you . . . The L , the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrec on, to our reunion with the great “I AM.” Part of our repentance involves working to secure jus ce for all and helping our neighbor to live in God’s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today’s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fer lize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit.

UNITED IN PRAYER and GOD’S WORD Thanks be to God for the friends or family members willing to ask the parish of Holy Family Cathedral to enjoin prayers in theirs for the following who are currently sick and in need of prayer:

WITH DEEPEST SYMPATHIES The members of Holy Family Cathedral extend our deepest sympathy to the families of our recently deceased KEN NIELSEN, MIGUEL ANGEL MONTANO, DAN GALLIVAN, and FORTINO MACIEL. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during bereavement of your loved one. Lord, remember those who have died and have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.  Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. Amen. ‘“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent?” –Romans 10: 13-15

Second Reading — Those who think they are standing secure should take care not to fall (1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12) or Romans 5:1-2, 5-8. Gospel — I shall cul vate the ground around the fig tree and fer lize it; it may bear fruit in the future (Luke 13:1-9) or John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]. Heavenly Father, Pour forth your Holy Spirit to inspire me with these words from Holy Scripture. S r in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my rela onship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ so that I might truly believe in and live the Good News. Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim the Good News to others. Pour out your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and ac ons. In moments of hesita on, remind me: If not me, then who will proclaim the Gospel? If not now, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed? If not the truth of the Gospel, then what shall I proclaim? God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangeliza on to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. MEETING GOD’S PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE The Diocese of Orange Office of Pastoral Care is recrui ng companion ministers to serve in the Hope and Healing A er Abor on Ministry, our diocesan outreach ministry for those hurt by abor on.

WALKING WITH PURPOSE All women are invited to this group that offers fellowship and a chance to develop a deeper relationship with Christ. Held on Monday nights at 7pm in the Parish Hall. Lisa Rezner (714) 401-9968 / Pam Sweetman (510) 703-4983.

We are in need of individuals who feel called to accompany the wounded in this very special way. It is not necessary for abor on to have been your direct experience. What is required is the ability to provide a caring, compassionate, and non-judgmental presence for someone who is suffering and who seeks reconcilia on with God and their faith community. Please prayerfully consider this ministry, which does require some formal training due to sensi vity. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Linda Ji at 714-282-4203 or [email protected]
