If all you need is to renew your online training, as it expires every 3 years, please visit https://orange.cmgconnect.org and complete the training. Upon completion of the online training, you will print or email the certificate of completion to me. We are grateful for all our volunteers, please understand we are following Diocesan directives for the protection of all. REMEMBERING OUR SICK AND HOMEBOUND AT CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS FOR OUR HOMEBOUND/CONVALESCENT HOMES Consider doing something for others during this time of Advent. Baskets with names of our Homebound and Convalescent Home residents are located at the Cathedral doors. Christmas cards and gifts for our elderly may include floral arrangements, blankets, non skid socks, scarves, etc. PLEASE do not send hygiene products, lotions or colognes.

In the past, your wonderful participation has brought much delight to thehomebound and convalescent home residents. As Parishioners please pray with them as a form of personalized outreach and connection during the month of December. Remember the importance of treasuring these holidays and times with the people we love. If you need further information please contact Lorna Golden at 714-639-2900 ext. 239 Thank you for your kindness and generosity and for sharing in this loving outreach. God bless you!

YOUNG IN SPIRIT ENCOURAGES YOU TO JOIN THEM The invitation is still out there for you to join the Young in Spirit group. You will be helping us with our projects for our own parishioners and people in foreign lands. Help us brighten someone’s day! School parents are most welcome! We meet every Tuesday at 9:00am in the Parish Center to socialize, share snacks and enjoy each other’s company. We really need your help to continue our goal to supply rosaries to those locally and throughout the world. You will be amazed at how easy it is and you will easily make your first rosary the first day. Please contact or Pat Erdkamp at 714-832-6759 for more information.

CALLING ALL MINISTERS OF MERCY! We are urgently in need of Extraordinary Ministers to the sick and homebound for all our loved ones who are not able to join us here at Mass. The ministry involves bringing Holy Communion to some of our elderly. It is usually only a weekly commitment and depending on how many you wish to minister to, perhaps only one hour. If you are interested, there are a few steps to follow. The diocese does require a background check with fingerprinting, an online “safe boundaries” course, which only takes about 30 minutes and delegation from the bishop. All of which we are happy to help with, in addition to any training you may need. You will be guided by an experienced minister the first couple of times until you are comfortable with the ministry. Please contact Chris Hanna in the rectory office and she can get you started in the process. Thank you very much for your consideration.

PRAYER FOR THE HOMELESS By Fr. Bernard Olszewski from Cross Catholic Outreach O God of endless mercy, in your divine plan to save us, your only Son became a person like us in all things but sin. When the time came for his birth into this world his mother Mary could not find a place for this miracle to take place. Through your grace, she and Joseph came upon a spot where Jesus could safely enter into the full scope of human activity and begin to show us how to live. The homelessness of the Holy Family in that moment became a shining light to all who would follow them! It is your desire that all would have a safe and secure place tolay their heads. During this year of grace of 2018 may we always be attentive to the needs of those who have no place to call home. May we open our hearts to help these modern day holy families so that all parents and children will be safe and secure in their own abodes. When Christ took flesh through the Blessed Virgin Mary, he made his home with us. We now pray that all people on the earth will have a home where Jesus may enter and bless it with his presence. May he nurture our love for each other, share in our joys, comfort us in our sorrows. Inspire by his teachings and example, may all people of the world enjoy the dignity of a home, which is, before all else, a dwelling place of God’s love, which radiates throughout the world.

NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas season the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand threedimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presentation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusual to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many pieces have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a manger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
