BACKGROUND SCREENING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROCEDURES IMPORTANT INFORMATION Policy: All diocesan employees and volunteers, school and parish, age 18 and above, working in any capacity with minors, children under 18, and vulnerable adults must obtain criminal background screening, safe environment training and sign the diocese Policy Against Sexual Misconduct Code of Conduct. Per Diocesan directive all Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound, Sacristans, Assistant Sacristans, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Directors/Coordinators of Religious Education, Principals, Teachers, and all school personel, Ushers, Youth ministers, parish staff, Altar Server trainers, Music directors, and anyone coming in contact with minors, must be fingerprinted and safe environment trained. If you are presently volunteering for any of the above ministries and need to complete the process, please contact Chris Hanna at [email protected]. In the meantime, you must refrain from your volunteering duties. Due to the fact that EMHC to the sick, care facilities and hospitals are required to interact with vulnerable adults, those delegated for these ministries must follow the Diocesan Policy for Safe Environment compliance as well as anyone coming in contact with children. If you have been background screened through the Diocese of Orange in the past, please provide me with your date of birth in order to do a search and have your name added to our database. If all you need is to renew your online training, as it expires every 3 years, please visit www.shieldthevulnerable.org and complete the training. Upon completion of the online training, you will print or email the certificate of completion to me. We are grateful for all our volunteers, please understand we are following Diocesan directives for the protection of all. If you have any questions, or need more information, please call or email Chris Hanna at 714-639-2900 Ext. 116 or via email at [email protected]

Thank you for all you do for HFC, please understand that you will be unable to volunteer until this process is completed.

THE SEED PROJECT BEGINS Dear Parishioners, Please excuse our mess in the parking lot. We have now started our renovation of the parking area to enhance the safety of our Holy Family School students and to create a much friendlier and welcoming environment for all who come to our special grounds. We ask and urge that you show the great patience that comes from the Holy Spirit in making the best situation possible in our limited parking areas. Please be aware of those who are diligently working to direct, as efficiently as possible, our traffic flow. It is recommended that when exiting the parking areas that you use the La Veta street exits to alleviate potential conflicts with our very narrow exit lane to Glassell St. Together with patience, understanding and compassion we will be successful in completing our goal and enjoy the fruits of our labor and sacrifice.

ATTENTION - UPCOMING TRIP WITH FR. PATRICK Fr. Patrick Moses will be the spiritual leader for this upcoming pilgrimage on September 3-September 16, 2017. We will experience the land of St. Patrick, Our Lady of Knock, cathedrals, abbeys, oratories and the Ireland countryside and in England we'll see London and surroundings along with Bath, Stonehenge, and Canterbury. There is limited space available so if you would like more information, please contact Ruth Burns at 714 826 5364 or [email protected].

DIOCESAN TRAINING FOR EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION (EMHC) TO THE SICK* - Saturday, August 26, 8:30am – 12:30pm, St. Norbert Parish Hall We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers to the Sick and homebound for all our loved ones who are not able to join us here at Mass. The ministry involves bringing Holy Communion to some of our elderly. It is usually only a weekly commitment and depending on how many you wish to minister to, as little as one hour. If you are interested, there are a few steps to follow. The Diocese requires a background check with fingerprinting, an online “safe boundaries” course; which only takes about 30 minutes and delegation from the bishop. The parish requires attendance of a Diocesan training and parish MSP training. We are happy to assist you in completing all steps and ensuring you receive all the training you need. Don’t worry, you will not be thrown to the wolves. You will be guided by an experienced minister the first couple of times until you are comfortable with the ministry. Please contact Chris Hanna in the rectory office and she can get you started in the background check process.

LISTEN TO YOUR DREAMS God visits Solomon in a dream, and the scripture story nowhere tells us that Solomon awoke to have this conversation with God! So, still in his dream, Solomon answers God’s question about what he desires most, and God grants his request for wisdom in abundance. In our waking hours, we are much distracted by work, home, family, traffic, entertainment, and many worries. When we try to think about what we really want out of life, we have trouble even imagining what that might be. But deep inside, our real longings dwell, known to God and to the Holy Spirit. Our dreams, unencumbered by defenses, may hold clues to what our deepest needs are, or what bothers us most. They could be God speaking. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Gospel — The one who knows of the kingdom of heaven brings new and old from the storeroom (Matthew 13:44-52 [44-46]).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The achievement of the late 1960s and early 1970s in enriching the “euchology” or “words of thanksgiving” available in the Church’s prayer is important on many levels. Ecumenically, it means that the Latin Rite now reflects the wealth of the East in having more than one prayer available to the Church. Pastorally, it actually acknowledges the place of the assembly in prayer, which is particularly clear in the Masses with Children. In fact, the traditional prayers of the Eastern Church served as models for our new prayers. In the East, what we call the Eucharistic Prayer is called the anaphora, and there are three main families of anaphora. Each family has a different “recipe” for arranging the usual parts of these prayers. All anaphora have “intercessions” included, but the Churches of Antioch place them toward the end of the prayer, Alexandria prefers them at the beginning before the “Holy, Holy,” and Syria puts them at the very end. One branch of the Syrian family is unique in not mentioning the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The Roman Canon we once prayed exclusively has some connection with the Alexandrian family, but once the signal for creativity was given, all the wealth of every prayer tradition was on the table, and our Sunday Mass has been greatly enriched. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
