The German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GAC) has welcomed delegations to Australia on several occasions in the past, namely in 2009, 2010 and 2012. This year’s delegation to Sydney consisted of six companies that visited Australia from 23 to 26 March 2014 and opened with a conference on 24 March 2014 at the NSW Trade & Investment Centre in Sydney. The “Energy Efficiency and Renewables in Buildings” conference was attended by 100 guests with sessions focusing on energy efficiency, retrofitting and sustainable building solutions, featuring energy efficiency experts from Australia and New Zealand as well as three guest speakers from Germany. Hosted by the German-Australian Chamber of Industry

and Commerce and NSW Trade & Invest, the conference was opened by Hans-Dieter Steinbach, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany who thanked GAC and NZGBA for organising the delegation and conference. He briefly spoke about the current status of export with its regulations and scientific exchange between Australia and Germany, with around 400 established scientific partnerships in 2013. The welcome was reiterated by Kristian Wolf, Executive Director of the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. He stated that the economic potential of New Zealand and Australia is underestimated and that this conference is demonstrating how important NZ and Australia can be to Germany. Monique Surges, CEO of the New Zealand German Business Association (NZGBA) said that,

“trade between New Zealand and Germany has increased both ways with  Germany remaining one of New Zealand’s top 5 import trading partners... Australia and New Zealand can learn a lot from each other “ – the New Zealand Government pushed ahead with renewables, whilst Australia instigated building energy measurement systems.” Monique Surges also addressed the current housing shortage in New Zealand; with 20.000

From left to right: Kristian Wolf & Anja Kegel, GAC; Robin Mellon, Green Building Council Australia to 30.000 homes currently required in Auckland alone, which goes along with house price increases of between 10 and 15 %.  Especially noteworthy were the excellent growth rate of the New Zealand economy at an estimated 3.4% in 2014 and great potential for building construction in Christchurch and Auckland, presenting huge opportunities for German building experts. Paul Rydzek, representing GAC’s project partner eclareon GmbH in Germany, introduced the transformation of the energy system in Germany - “Energiewende” – highlighting the German Government’s commitment to renewable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and 2050, respectively. Paul Rydzek:

“The Exportinitiative Energy Efficiency - made in Germany has proven to be a succesful tool in enhancing international trade, cooperation and exchange of ideas between German SMEs and international partner.” Robin Mellon, Chief Operating Officer of the Green Building Council Australia, highlighted

positive developments for increased sustainability and energy efficiency in Australian buildings with 670 Green Star certified projects currently administered by the GBCA. Green Star rates commercial, industrial and public buildings across nine environmental impact categories, including energy, water, materials and emissions criteria. Robin Mellon: “There are about 100 green building councils around the world. The council rates, advocates and educates the building sector.” To kick-off the second session on retrofitting & refurbishment, Stephen Procter, Senior Project Officer at the NSW Office of Environment, explained how Environmental Upgrade Agreements, introduced by the City of Sydney and the City of Melbourne and followed by four other City Councils in New South Wales - Parramatta, Lake Macquarie, North Sydney and Newcastle – significantly contribute to the NSW Energy Efficiency Action Plan with the target of 50% of NSW commercial floor space to achieve a 4–star NABERS energy and water rating by 2020.

www.germany.org.au

The third session on sustainable building solutions was opened by German solar cooling expert Dr Uli Jakob, representing Germany’s Green Chiller Association for Sorption Cooling, presented the latest technological advancements for solarthermal applications, PV-cooling and solar collector technologies in Europe. Around 1.100 units are already in use and supported by funding schemes in Germany. These innovations present a huge potential for German export markets by 2050. To conclude the day’s program, Mike Underhill, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority gave an overview of business opportunities within New Zealand’s energy and building markets. He noted that high tenancy rates are pushing the commercial building market towards increased energy efficient measures, with the NABERSNZ scheme now in place. Home heating with biomass is of high interest to New Zealanders as is efficient space heating and water heating. The New Zealand Government’s home insulation programme has helped retrofit 240,000 houses and residential construction companies, keeping busy with construction projects planned or already underway in Auckland and Christchurch that call for clever design and skilled tradesmen. The conference allowed visiting German companies to connect with Australian industry representatives and prepare for their one-onone meetings with potential Australian and New Zealand business partners to market their products in both countries. The trade delegation was jointly organised with the New Zealand German Business Association and eclareon GmbH and sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)  based on a decision by the German Bundestag. The GermanAustralian Chamber of Industry and Commerce thanks its project partner NSW Trade & Invest for hosting the event and EcoGeneration Magazine for promoting the initiative in Australia. INTERVIEW

Gorgon Project

The Gorgon Project

Setting Cryogenic Heat Exchanger, source: DB Schenker

Project Logistics and Oil & Gas have been a key component in Schenker’s operations in Australasia.

R

on, can you outline the importance of the natural resources industry and how you went about ensuring that DB Schenker was in the best position to provide the necessary logistics for that sector?

Australia is naturally rich in resources such as Liquefied Gas, Iron Ore, Nickel, Bauxite, Coal, Gold and Diamonds and through its proximity to Asia is in a prime position to be a long term supplier of these resources to this rapidly growing region in the world. Asia’s urbanisation drive has supported the Australian economy substantially in recent years. The work we are conducting on the Gorgon project is managed by our Perth Office in Western Australia where we have assembled a large team of local and international professionals to run and coordinate every aspect of the operations. We have a long history of project logistics involvement in Western Australia in the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and mining industries.

“Schenker Australia was awarded the Integrated Logistics Services contract in May 2009, valued at AUD 594

4

Million, which is by far the largest project contract ever awarded to any DB Schenker organisation globally.” The success of Schenker Australia was meeting the major selection criteria of having Key People, Presence in Australia and in particular WA, Logistics Execution Strategy, Financial strength of the DB group and the I.T systems infrastructure. At the end of the day it’s all about having the best experienced people for the job to get the best outcome results and we are proud that our team achieves this “day in and day out.” This was no easy task and was quite a recruitment process to obtain this calibre of expertise. Our expertise and global reach enables Schenker Australia in Perth, Australia to work with key offices in Basildon, U.K and Masan, Korea and other support offices all over the world.

Gorgon Project

INTERVIEW

Gorgon Project with Ron Koehler

Ron Koehler began working at DB Schenker in 1978. He started with an apprenticeship in forwarding, gaining hands on experience as a truck driver, clerk and worked his way up to become CEO of DB Schenker in Australia. Ron has recently facilitated in spearheading the logistics operations for one of the most ambitious natural resources projects in the world: The Chevron-operated Gorgon project a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and domestic gas plant on Barrow Island off Australia’s North West coast. What do you consider is the unique offer that Schenker makes to projects? Our “unique selling proposition” simply comes down to the enormous network we have which is second to none. But as important, is also having a dedicated and experienced operations team. It’s a big DB Schenker family that provides sense of reassurance and a feeling of comfort to our customers. We always get the job done. To date, Schenker Australia has shipped close to 1.8 million freight tonnes. That’s a big number in any ones language! The biggest single piece to be moved under our contract was the Gas Turbine Generators from Italy to Barrow Island.

“If we play our cards right we can be a new major player in Project Logistics for the Oil & Gas market.” With ongoing urbanisation, the demand for energy is forecast to rapidly grow worldwide, with LNG being seen as a cleaner option to

www.germany.org.au

coal fired power generation. Many more LNG projects will be built worldwide and we can confidently bring experience to the table that would be of interest and value to any major energy company.

What has Schenker learned from serving such major clients? If you look at Project Logistics and Oil & Gas, the biggest topic is Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). The HSE standards on the Gorgon project are second to none that will be the benchmark for all future projects.

“We at Schenker Australia have learned that good safety systems results in a Return On Investment so it makes good business sense to apply what we have learned to everything we do and to ensure that every employee returns home safely to their families at the end of each day.”

Setting Cryogenic Heat Exchanger

Setting Cryogenic Heat Exchanger, source: Chevron We have made a substantial investment with employing three full-time global HSE specialists that will “rewrite the books” so to speak in sharing that knowledge within the DB Schenker global network organisation.

How will things change for Schenker in Australia over the next couple of years? Resources, minerals and gas will always be required and we will continue doing that business. After the phase of building the monumental production facilities, come the spare parts. These plants require a vast amount of service parts and Schenker Australia will continue generating its revenue via normal air and ocean operations for this. We will also extend the service offering in providing our expertise knowledge to other countries in the world and in working with our people in other organisations.

INTERVIEW

Barangaroo project

Barangaroo project in Sydney Interview with Petra Berning General Manager – BCI Economics, BCI MEDIA GROUP ► What is the role of BCI Australia in the Australian construction market and how do your members benefit from the BCI service?

What differences in the construction market do German companies need to consider when looking to be active in the Australian construction market?

BCI Australia is a project leads provider that reports comprehensively and in great detail on all upcoming construction activity in this country. We cover all types of building construction and civil construction projects, including projects in the infrastructure, mining, oil and gas sectors. However, we do not report on the domestic residential project market, which is a separate market in its own right. As a real-time construction research organisation we report on well over 2,000 construction projects every week.

It’s essential to consider the major demographic and climatic differences between Australia and Germany. As Australia is 24 times the size of Germany, but has less than a third of the population, there are special infrastructure and logistical challenges that have few parallels in Germany. In addition to that, homes and work places across Australia have to address a wide variety of climatic conditions and building codes, which has important design implications. This is completely different from Germany where the climatic conditions are generally harsher than in Australia, but where the differences within the country are negligible. Hence, you can’t assume what works in a suburb of Frankfurt will suit the Gold Coast, and what works on the Gold Coast will be the best solution in Hobart!

Our customers can access our project leads information in our online database and home in on the projects of interest using search criteria such as building type, category, value, floor area, construction start dates etc. The information we compile on a given project gets more detailed as the project proceeds through the development pipeline and advances from the early stages, like concept and design on to construction. We also publish the relevant contacts, from developer, architect, and engineers through to subcontractors. With this information, our customers can get in touch with the right people involved in the right projects at the right time. In the first quarter of this year we launched our new BCI Mobile App, which means our customers can access project information away from the office using a smart phone or tablet. ► Is there a special opportunity for German companies in the Australian construction market? German suppliers to the building sector enjoy an excellent reputation in Australia for delivering high quality innovative solutions. Having easy access to relevant project information obviously contributes to their success here is Australia. Coincidentally, BCI was founded in 1998 by Matthias Krups, a German entrepreneur residing in Sydney. After over a decade in Australia BCI is now serving the who’s who of German companies involved in the construction market here in Australia.

6

► At the moment, the Barangaroo project in Sydney is of particular interest in the NSW construction market. Do you have detailed information on this mega project in your database? Barangaroo is certainly an important project for NSW generating an estimated 3,000 construction jobs and delivering a further 6,000 tenancy jobs when finished. Not surprisingly the scale and scope of Barangaroo presents unique design and construction challenges for the delivery authority. Formerly a container port with a 22 hectare footprint, the site provides an outstanding opportunity for world class urban renewal within the CBD precinct. The $6 billion Barangaroo project is primarily recorded in the BCI database across its three individual precincts; Headland Park, Central Barangaroo and Barangaroo South. At this point, Barangaroo South is the most advanced, with construction work having started late 2010, and is expected to finish in 2015. Headland Park is slightly less developed, with early site works starting mid2012 and expected to also finish in 2015. Central Barangaroo at this point is still in the master-planning stages, and remains largely undeveloped. In turn each of these precincts can be separated into individual sub-projects, either specifically created to represent the multitude of tender contracts needed to build ► Image Barangaroo, courtesy of Lend Lease as at December 2013. Artist impression only. Subject to planning approvals.

Barangaroo - or for major components of each precinct. The recently approved Sydney Crown Casino Resort, valued at $1.6 billion, for instance, is individually represented in the database. As with most developments of this scope and scale, we have a masterplan project to help clients catalogue and track the various smaller components. There are currently 14 different projects on our system pertaining to Barangaroo, though this is constantly being expanded as more information becomes available. ► Do you know of any German companies that are involved in this project? German companies are well placed to draw on their experience and expertise to offer world class solutions across a range of design and specification challenges unique to Barangaroo. With a stated goal of being a “climate positive” community, opportunities exist for German companies with strong ties to the green space. Through our research, we have been able to

Barangaroo project

confirm the involvement of companies like Robert Bosch, Dorma, BASF and Thyssen Krupp Elevator in the Barangaroo project. These companies are integrated in various design, tender and delivery considerations across the three development areas – Barangaroo South (already under way), Headland Park and Central Barangaroo. ► How can German companies get a general overview about opportunities in the Australian Construction market?

BCI Breakfast Briefings

BCI Australia conducts Breakfast Briefings in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. During those Breakfast Briefings we give a forecast on the building and construction market for the next fiscal year (starting July 1st in Australia). As a part of our cooperation with the AHK, we offer AHK-members BCIsubscriber-terms if they want to attend one of the Breakfast Briefings (189 A$ + GST instead of 289 A$ + GST). BCI Market Outlook Report

At this time we present our findings in an annual publication, called the “BCI Market Outlook Report”. In that report we consider the domestic Australian construction pipeline and see which projects make their way through it, from early stage projects entering the pipeline, evaluating the impact of abandoned and deferred projects and following through to projects commencing construction and

leaving the pipeline. This report reveals the most dynamic regions within Australia and the most thriving market sectors, as well as the projects with the highest likelihood to be deferred or abandoned. After the events, the report will be available for sale in our online shop. ► As these events are coming soon, do you already have insights on the development of the Australian Construction Market? Australia will be facing challenges during 2014 while the capital expenditure from business sectors other than those related to resources builds to compensate for the decline in mining related investment now that boom has passed. However, the prevailing economic conditions, including continued low interest rates and a declining Australian dollar, and the levels of business and consumer confidence should be conducive for sustainable growth. It was expected that the State Governments would set the lead with substantial expenditure planned especially for infrastructure projects. Currently the issuing of tenders is being constrained, however, largely because of concerns regarding budget deficits. Midterm this will have to be balanced against the threat of rising unemployment. The prospects for construction still appear promising and the bounce in Building Approvals in January was a sign that residential development is continuing to lead the way. Moreover, the overall “pipeline”

INTERVIEW

has been gradually building over the last 12 months. BCI does not maintain data on the domestic residential market but we have noted a pick-up in multi-unit residential developments starting mid 2013 compared with a quiet 2012. Overall we expect further growth of around 5-10% for calendar year 2014 over 2013. Interestingly, from the figures published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, we observe a trend towards apartment living in Australia with units numbering around 55% of total dwelling starts in 2012/13 whereas the average in previous years was just under 50%. In the healthcare sector, 2 major operators, Healthscope and Ramsay Healthcare have announced expansion plans at their hospitals and medical facilities for 2014 valued at $600M. And of course, aged care facilities will continue to be in demand with the ageing population demographic. With a cheaper Australian dollar, the Australian tourism industry should be favourably placed for 2014. Understandably, the Hospitality sector has a number of interesting development opportunities under consideration which might be of interest to German suppliers to this market. We could continue but of course, we cannot enumerate all the “hot spots” here and instead welcome AHK members to query our database for the sectors, projects and companies that would be worth targeting for their particular interests.

DELEGATION

Myanmar

The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Myanmar

The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Myanmar joined the AHK network as its youngest member when German Federal President Joachim Gauck officially opened its office on 11 February 2014. He did so during the First German Myanmar Business Conference, jointly hosted by the DIHK, the Delegation Office and their Myanmar partner organization UMFCCI (Republic of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry). More than 150 representatives of German Business, among them big corporate players like BASF, Deutsche Bank and Siemens, attended the conference and had the opportunity to network with more than 200 Myanmar counterparts. The German delegation was headed by Prof Ludwig Georg Braun, Honorary Chairman of the DIHK, and Dr. Martin Wansleben, its CEO. And the AHK Asian network proved its close co-operation and efficiency through the presence of all Managing Directors and a relevant number of board members.

German Federal President Joachim Gauck

The strong presence from the corporate sector and the high ranking political involvement successfully demonstrated to the Myanmar partners that German business shows a strong interest in the country and a commitment to support development in a long term spirit of partnership. With a GDP per capita of just 915 USD and a number of shortcomings in terms of energy supply and infrastructure, Myanmar obviously is at an early stage of development. But experts agree, that thanks to its geostrategic position, its wealth in natural resources and the government’s commitment to resolutely pursue its reform policy, it is worth engaging at such an early stage to be able to reap the benefits within the last and latest relevant Asian market. This is the reason as well why the DIHK had decided to steadily open

the Delegation Office in order to provide German companies with effective support and to develop a sound basis for bilateral development. The more as competitors from other Asian countries already have a strong presence on the ground. German technology enjoys a brilliant reputation in the country and even if cost is a relevant factor when it comes to investing in machinery and equipment, especially for the private sector, the fact that Myanmar seems to be decided to avoid mistakes made by neighboring countries and to engage in a path of sustainable development instead of quick and dirty industrialization, offers good opportunities for German suppliers.

Energy and infrastructure development are the number one priority but modernisation and development of industries is another promising field for German suppliers. Besides the light industries the textile sector, food and beverages, medical and construction are the most interesting sectors for exports, projects and investment activities. While bilateral trade after years of sanctions still is modest with just 150 mill. EUR in 2012, German exports have grown dynamically within the last two years, leading to a considerable German surplus. After the reinstallation of GSP+ zero tariffs by the EU in 2013, Myanmar should be able to develop into a relevant sourcing destination as well. Besides the garment sector, German importers view seafood and vegetables as lucrative business for both sides. In order to achieve mid-term wins, huge investment in qualification will be key in order to develop an efficient workforce out of the population of about 60 mio. German development co-operation already is very active in that field and German companies working on the ground engage in training activities as well.

Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference in Perth

F

From February 19 to 21, the Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition & Conference (AOG) was hosted in Perth. With 450 exhibitors from twenty countries, the convention broke all records. The AOG is the most important of its kind in Australia and also in the greater Asia-Pacific region. To mark the event, the GAC organised a get together with the West Australian-German Business Association (WAGBA). The gathering allowed members of both organisations to meet and discuss the future of Australia’s most dynamic industry. We would also like to thank DB Schenker for their support and the use of their exhibition space. As coal production becomes increasingly expensive, gas will gain further market share. In addition to the large LNG projects in Western Australia, conference attendees were particularly interested in the development of gas fields in Queensland. These projects promise good business opportunities to those who provide support to the industry (security, logistics, transport, etc.) as well as those involved with them. With the imminent closure of several oil refineries is Victoria, environmental technologies, e.g. to remediate oil contaminated soil, are of increasing importance.

Kick-off: German-Australian Business Culture Seminar

T

he first event in 2014 with Volker Latus, Director of Involve International was a great success. What must I consider when I work with Germans and Australians? What are the specifics of both business cultures? What are the major dos and don’ts? These topics were vividly discussed in the German-Australian Business Culture Seminar. The group of 30 participants explored key cultural dimensions and exchanged their experiences in a very practical approach. They developed a good understanding of the do’s and don’ts for typical business applications. Many thanks to Volker for creating such an interactive learning atmosphere (which did not involve any PowerPoint slides). We also like to thank BDO for providing such a great venue. Study Tour of Services Trades Queensland to Berlin

B

etween 30 September and 10 October 2013 a Queensland services trade delegation representing the National Fire Industry Association Queensland (NFIAQ) and the Plumbers Union undertook a study tour facilitated by the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce. A series of meetings were scheduled with significant stakeholders in the services trade sector in Berlin. The five delegates also attended the EuroFire Conference in Switzerland that attracts participation from a wide audience. The main objectives of the study tour were to: • Examine new and emerging fire protection products, technology and training techniques • Deepen knowledge about the highly regarded German model of vocational education and training • Identify commercial opportunities for the Queensland services trades The delegates had the opportunity to meet with leaders representing key organisations right across the services trades such as the German Fire Protection Association, Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), Competence for International Cooperation in Vocational Training and Education (iMove). They also visited the Berlin Fire Department as well as the Berlin International Airport. In general, the meetings focused on the key themes of Industry Governance,

Education/Training and Fire protection. The delegates took away a number of ideas and lessons on how to improve their practices at the local Training College. Meanwhile, the Australian delegates felt that their own Australian operation of training apprentices and post trade tradespeople offered some assistance to the German thinking on “best practice” trade training delivery. “All of the meeting hosts and meeting guests were very helpful and capable to answer our questions with knowledge and authority. Thanks again for all of your work in helping us work out the tour.” Wayne Smith, Executive Director of the NFIAQ

It was a fantastic evening for all involved and showcased the depth of our German-Australian business community and reemphasised our commitment to a strong bilateral relationship.” Kristian Wolf, GAC Executive Director

I am a little bit amused about this criticism. We all are in favour of a competitive economy. As Mario Draghi, the Italian president of the ECB, said: ‘You cannot make the weak stronger by making the strong weaker.’ And if you look at the euro zone, my Spanish colleague has said again and again, that the Spanish economy depends on the success of the German export economy. Our economies are closely interconnected. Therefore I do not take this criticism too seriously.’” Dr Wolfgang Schäuble’s comment to the note: “Germany is criticized for exporting too much”

The GAC would like to give a special thank you to Lucy Hughes Turnbull AO and Malcolm Turnbull for hosting this reception at their residence and making everyone involved feel welcome offering Dr Schäuble the surroundings of an Australian Home for his reception. A special thank you also goes to Australian Aerospace, Bayer, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Messe worldwide CeBIT Australia, Siemens, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Volkswagen Group Australia for supporting this rare and important occasion as primary sponsors. Moreover we would like to thank Gerolsteiner for supplying the reception with Mineral Water and Group Technologies for their technical support during the function.

YEF Port of Melbourne Tour On February 20, the German-Australian Chamber, supported by Schenker Australia, invited their Young Executive Forum (YEF) members to an informative Port of Melbourne tour to get an in-depth look at the Port’s facilities. After a short presentation about the Port’s operations by Don Forsdyke from the Port of Melbourne Corporation, Ron Collett and Alexander Nowroth from Schenker Australia gave some surprising facts and insightful information about the export business. After all this theoretical information, the Young Executives felt ready to explore the Port first hand via a water based tour on board the MV Magic. Getting up close to container ships and the massive cranes that service them, Don was explaining what the attendees were looking at. Despite the very informative tour, there was still enough time to enjoy a few drinks and network with other young professionals. A great start to the 2014 YEF event series! ABOUT THE YOUNG EXECUTIVE FORUM: As a member, your company can nominate up to 3 of your staff to receive invitations to our Young Executive Forum events.
