Dear Parishioners, This weekend is the end of the Christmas season and we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. On Monday we begin Ordinary Time in the church and we switch from white vestments to green. When you came to church, or if you were at the 4 pm Saturday or 8 am Sunday masses, you may have noticed above the doors some markings: 20 +C +M +B 19 in chalk. What does it mean? On the Feast of the Epiphany there is a tradition of marking the lintel of the house or church. The blessing is: “the three wise men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became human two thousand and nineteen years ago. May Christ bless our home (church) and remain with us throughout the New Year. Amen.” In Latin CMB stands for Christus mansionem benedicat (“May Christ bless this house”). As we move towards the middle of the month of January we remember the sanctity of human life. We remember that everyone, from the moment of conception until natural death, is valuable and sacred in the eyes of God. On Saturday, January 19th, Bishop Thomas will be at a Pro-life Walk in Los Angeles called OneLife LA. I encourage everyone who is able to attend. On Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 12:15 pm at St. Joan of Arc, I will be celebrating a Right to Life Mass followed by the 26th Annual Lights for Life Pro-Life Prayer Vigil outside the Lloyd George U.S. Courthouse. I encourage all to come. With all the rhetoric in the news about border security and those here illegally, I wanted to get some facts (which is hard to actually get) from the Pew Research Center (http://pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/11/28/5-facts-about-illegal -immigration-in-the-u-s/) It is estimated that in 2016 there were 10.7 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States and 7.8 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. labor force. Those 10.7 million people are children of God. They have dignity and respect in the eyes of God. The U.S. Bishops have stated: “Undocumented immigrants present a special concern. Often their presence is considered criminal since they arrive without legal permission. Under the harshest view, undocumented people may be regarded as undeserving of rights or services. This is not the view of Catholic social teaching. The Catholic Church teaches that every person has basic human rights and is entitled to have basic human needs met—food, shelter, clothing, education, and health care. Undocumented persons are particularly vulnerable to exploitation by employers, and they are not able to complain because of the fear of discovery and deportation. Current immigration policy that criminalizes the mere attempt to immigrate and imprisons immigrants who have committed no crime or who have already served a just sentence for a crime is immoral. In the Bible, God promises that our judgment will be based on our treatment of the most vulnerable. Before God we cannot excuse inhumane treatment of certain persons by claiming that their lack of legal status deprives them of rights given by the Creator. Finally, immigration policy that allows people to live here and contribute to society for years but refuses to offer them the opportunity to achieve legal status does not serve the common good. The presence of millions of people living without easy access to basic human rights and necessities is a great injustice.” (http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/immigration/catholic-teaching-

We have a broken immigration system and we all need to urge our President, Senators, and Representatives in Washington, D.C. to work together and solve this situation and to treat everyone with dignity and respect. All life is sacred from the moment of conception, until natural death. This includes those who are here illegally (and it is not just those from Mexico or Central America, but includes those from Asia which tend to overstay Visas), those in prisons, homeless, youth, elderly, etc. Let us realize that the Pro-Life movement is not just about an end to abortion, but also taking care of the basic human needs of all. If you are here unauthorized and undocumented, know that Fr. Tony and I are praying for you and your situation. If you need someone to talk to or pray with, we are here. Let us resolve to be people of Life. Let us all do something to help our neighbor in need. It could be a simple as contributing to the food pantry, including intercessions for life in your daily prayers, helping a neighbor out, volunteering to babysit for a neighbor or family member, getting involved as a mentor for youth, visiting a hospital or nursing home, contacting our elected representatives, etc. We also need to have more volunteers to help at church. So pray what God may be calling you to get involved in. On January 26/27 we will be having a ministry fair where you can sign up to help serve our Church. May God bless you and your families as we continue through 2019! on-immigration-and-the-movement-of-peoples.cfm).

Adoration Our Parish is privileged in having Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Praying before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is a great opportunity for our Advent journey. A time that does not disappoint because prayer keeps us in God’s loop, and offers us grace to accept the happenings of the day. An hour may be too long so the Catholic Church encourages pop visits. Pop in and share the ups and downs of the day. Our steps leading to the Chapel will be our greatest song in celebration the new born child of Bethlehem. May this private time in closeness prayer be ours.

Mon. 12Noon to 3:30pm Tues. through Friday 8am to 3:30pm.
