The case of the Ethiopian specialist cook is one of many. Lakech was well trained in ethnic and international cuisine. She had hoped to earn enough money so that she could support her family at home. Her children could go to school and have a better life. Instead, she got hardly any wages and found working conditions in the restaurant inhuman. In fact, it was nothing short of forced labour. Slavery and human trafficking can be found anywhere in Europe today, even in Berlin. Like exploitation and prostitution they are illegal. But it is difficult to find and punish the culprits.
