Dear Oberstdorf holidaymaker and winter enthusiast, There is a long-standing tradition of winter sports in Oberstdorf. Not only has it been the host venue of the Four Hills Tournament for an unbelievable 66 years, but the extensively mod ernised Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill with its towering silhouette is a landmark of the most southerly part of Germany. This is where the Ski Flying World Championships with leading international competitors will take place in January. Our very best athletes such as Karl Geiger, Johannes Rydzek and Vinzenz Geiger make the most of the optimum training conditions that prevail here to get themselves in top shape. Of course, there are plenty of things for you to benefit from as a visitor to Oberstdorf too, including optimally groomed cross-country skiing trails ready for your use and numerous winter sports events for you to experience first-hand with our athletes. In recent years, Oberstdorf has made a name for itself as a diverse winter sports resort with a huge range of activities that offers something for everyone. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy 130 kilometres of pistes in
six different ski areas, including Fellhorn / Kanzelwand, Germany’s largest cross-border ski resort. Have you ever descended the Nebelhorn valley run? Covering 7.5 kilometres from the summit of the Nebelhorn to the valley, this is Germany’s longest valley run. Families feel particularly at home in Söllereck, a family-friendly ski resort with a ski carousel and children’s practice area. Thanks to state-of-theart snowmaking equipment, the ski resorts around Oberstdorf are open from mid-December to early May. Modern lifts swiftly transport you to the summits, so you can spend as long as possible on the optimally groomed pistes, where snow is guaranteed. If you prefer exploring the great outdoors on foot, there are also plenty of options available to you. How about a snowshoeing taster course or a stunning winter hike? A network of 140 kilometres of groomed hiking trails awaits you, with snowy mountain landscapes, idyllic huts and spectacular natural experiences. You can even try out the cross-country skiing trails for the FIS Nordic Ski World

When winter comes around, the Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal Valley cable cars offer skiers and snowboarders a huge range of choices on some 130 kilometres of pistes. Just a stone’s throw from the villages of Oberstdorf, Riezlern, Hirschegg and Mittelberg, the six ski areas Nebelhorn, Fellhorn / Kanzelwand, Söllereck, Walmendingerhorn, Ifen and Heuberg-Arena await snow-hungry visitors, all accessible with a single ski pass.

Nebelhorn Thirteen kilometres of pistes await winter athletes in the Nebelhorn ski area. One of the Allgäu’s highest gondola lifts transports skiers and snowboarders to an altitude of 2,224 metres. At the top, impressive panoramic views of over 400 peaks await from the summit station and the spectacular new Nebelhorn cable car summit restaurant 2224. The Nordwandsteig (north face walkway) is a breath taking experience. Unlimited fun then awaits all avid skiers and snowboarders on the 7.5-kilometre valley run, the longest valley run in Germany covered entirely in artificial snow. Several different descents are available to freeriders and freestylers. A night in the IgluLodge is the perfect way to end an action-packed day on the Nebelhorn. Fellhorn / Kanzelwand Welcome to the modern cross-border ski region Fellhorn / Kanzelwand where fun on skis quite literally knows no bounds – and even extends across two different countries with plenty of comfort and convenience. Last winter, the final remaining T-bar lift was replaced by the new Bierenwangbahn, Germany’s most comfortable six-seater chair lift. With heated, real leather seats and a bubble for protection, you’ll soon be in seventh heaven for skiers. Thanks to the newly created Bierenwang piste, there is also more room than ever for fun on skis. Söllereck Here in the Allgäu, there’s a name for family friendliness: Söllereck. The family mountain impresses with beginner-friendly slopes, 14 kilometres of pistes and five artificial-snow- covered descents. A new addition as of last winter is “Söllis Winterwelt” for beginners and children. This offers perfect conditions for both skiing novices and improvers. A free, 15-metre conveyor makes your first attempts at skiing easy, while the 60-metre conveyor and Wannenkopflift make further progression simple. Söllis MiniPark and a monster parcours provide plenty of fun along the piste, while the year-round SölliBully playground invites kids to climb and explore. You can’t help but love the Allgäu Coaster, a year-round toboggan run on rails. The Berghaus Schönblick tends to all your refreshment needs with plenty of Allgäu specialities as well as a huge sun terrace and free deckchairs.

The ski area on the Walmendingerhorn in the Kleinwalsertal Valley primarily welcomes carvers and boarders who love well-groomed descents and quieter settings when stopping for a break or a little après-ski.

However, it also whets the appetite for more, with enticing off-piste options attracting freestylers and deep- powder fans. With guaranteed natural snow, plenty of stunning views and a rustic feel, it is with good reason that the Walmendingerhorn is the favourite area of many locals. Ifen Formerly a well-kept secret, this charming area now impresses with numerous new facilities and is gradually developing into a pre mium ski area for the whole family. The Olympiabahn chair lift built last year was instantly met with great enthusiasm and kept waiting times to a minimum when the ski slopes opened at the start of each day. A modern snow-making system with a reservoir as well as both waste water and drinking water pipes vastly increased the certainty of snow. Length: 10 km Altitude metres: 72 m Location: medium-difficulty cross-country skiing trail with ascents and descents of up to 20 % For about half of the circular trail, it is possible to return to the start via a shorter loop. The longer version takes a varied route through an untouched winter landscape and heavily snow-covered mountain forests to the Aibele Alpe. Here, the trail cuts an idyllic arc around the alpine hut, which is located on the territory of the market community of Oberstdorf but managed from the neighbouring Bregenzerwald region. The return route runs along the opposite side of the valley, undulating as it goes and offering several beautiful views of the gentle mountain ridge of the Piesenkopf to the north. On returning to the Rohrmoos mountain restaurant, do not miss the chance for a brief look inside one of Germany’s oldest wooden chapels before you do the inevitable of rewarding yourself for all your hard work! In winter, the only way to get to the Rohrmoostal Valley is via a private toll road! There is no bus line. You should therefore take approx. € 5 .00 (in coins) with you for the toll charge.

Otterrohr
Rubi – Reichenbach – Schöllang

The Otterrohr circular trail is located at the north-western edge of Oberstdorf. In the north and west, the cross-country skiing trails run parallel to the present-day course of the Stillach River. Unlike many other cross-country skiing trails, these are largely protected from the wind thanks to the surrounding peaks. Their location also means that if the weather is good, plenty of sunshine is guaranteed on them. The largely flat cross-country skiing trails are particularly popular with beginners. In summer, the agricultural land is now primarily used for haymaking or as pastures. In past times, the originally marshy straw meadows along the Stillach River bend were used as arable land for many years. It is no longer possible to determine whether the area got its current name from its former owners or due to the otters that lived here.
In view of its long overall length, this cross-country skiing trail should not be underestimated. However, it can be shortened after a loop in the Rubinger Oy or when near Reichenbach. With stunning scenery, options to stop for a break at cosy, nearby eateries and idyllic villages, the circular route is a true gem of the Oberstdorf trail network! Due to the exposed terrain, the minimum snow depth required for machine-based grooming is not always achieved. As a result, it is not always possible to use this cross-country skiing trail – including out of consideration of the farmers and land owners. After passing the “Widum”, the trail leads below the Schöllang mountain church and its Herrenholz hill back to Reichenbach. The subsequent descents to Rubi once again offer particularly spectacular views: all the way from the Oberstdorf Basin to far into the Kleinwalsertal Valley. More athletic cross-country skiers will again be completely in their element here before the trail finishes with a flat section along the Rubinger Oy towards Oberstdorf. By taking the skiing trail in Kar weidach, you can switch to the cross-country skiing trail A in Otterrohr.

Cross-country skiing – the perfect winter training 1. As a sport, cross-country skiing is particularly good for you as it uses many different muscle groups. It is kind on the joints and not only works the leg and core muscles but also the often neglected shoulders and arms. 2. By alternating between skating and classic style, you will activate even more muscle groups. 3. You furthermore stimulate your metabolism, strengthen your immune system and activate fat burning. 4. Cross-country skiing not only boosts your endurance but also requires good balance and helps to improve this.
5. Cross-country skiing is also great for your coordination. You learn to move dynamically and economically – while enjoying the exercise of course. 6. Exercising outdoors in the cold, in the natural winter landscape has great physiological benefits. Anyone who is stressed and yearns to relax and recuperate should try cross-country skiing. The constant movement rhythm through a peaceful wintry landscape calms the nerves and clears the head. 7. It helps the cardiovascular system. If you cross-country ski to a certain extent, you will also note an improvement in your strength and endurance.
Zämed duss The “Zämed duss” (“Sharing the outdoors”) campaign subtly encourages people to treat one another with respect. It also aims to remind people that they are all out and about for the same reason: to enjoy nature. Cross-country skiing and winter hiking trails offer plenty of potential for conflicts. The former are solely intended for cross-country skiers, whereas winter hikers can enjoy over 140 km of groomed winter hiking trails. If everyone sticks to the trails they should be on, there should not be any conflicts. We ask all dog owners to dispose of dog poo in the dog toilets provided. In winter, when temperatures remain persistently low, poo can be preserved for weeks or even months, lying at the edge of trails for everyone to see. So please do your bit. After all, we all want to share the outdoors for as long as possible.

The optimum cross-country skiing equipment
Sunglasses provide protection against snow blindness.
Select your headwear in line with the weather conditions. For warmer temperatures, we recommend a functional headband as this provides warmth while still allowing your head to “breathe”.
Appropriate poles of a suitable length should be selected depending on your skiing technique. Diagonal: armpit-height poles. Skating: chin-height poles.
Gloves should be close fitting to enable a firm grip and optimum usage of poles.
As a top, we recommend a water-repellent, breathable jacket. Long-sleeved functional clothes are best. Add a gilet or additional jacket depending how cold it is.
Your trousers should avoid unnecessary freezing or sweating and allow sufficient freedom of movement. Special cross-country skiing trousers exist to this end.
As with the poles, the length of the skis depends on the technique used but also the area of use and the skier’s weight. The basic length can be determined as follows: Height + 20 cm = ski length for classic style Ensure you have a stiff sole. This enables you to push off well. Buy sufficiently large boots; your big toe should not touch the front of them.

Tourismus Oberstdorf organises a taster course in the Ried cross-country skiing stadium twice a week from about mid-December to early April, depending on snow levels. The taster course is run by the Oberstdorf ski schools. The price includes equipment hire and professional instruction.

Wintry Breitachklamm Ravine trail Length: 4 km Altitude metres: 187 m Duration: 2.5 hours Location: valley Starting in Tiefenbach, the winter hiking trail heads through the entrance of the Breitachklamm Ravine and straight into its depths. This is the deepest and, without a doubt, one of the most impressive rocky gorges in Central Europe. It is also one of the most beautiful natural geotopes in Bavaria, especially in winter when the frozen ice formations along the well-developed hiking trail that snakes it way through the ravine are an extraordinary natural sight. Close to the upper entrance is the only bridge across the Breitachklamm Ravine. Known as the “Zwingsteg”, this is definitely not to be missed! The views down into the thundering depths of the gorge are simply staggering. On the opposite side, a short climb leads up towards the Engenkopf. At the top, the route continues past the Alpe
Dornach back to Tiefenbach. Alternatively, on reaching the Breitachklamm Ravine’s upper entrance, there are also other options for extending the winter hike into the Kleinwalsertal Valley. Regular buses return to Oberstdorf from the Walserschanze, the nearby border crossing. Tip: Night hikes through the Breitachklamm Ravine are offered twice a week in winter. Seeing the frozen ice formations by torch light is an extraordinary, almost mystical experience! Winter hike in Reichenbach Length: 3 km Duration: 1 hour
Altitude metres: 64 m Location: valley
From Reichenbach’s southern entrance, the hiking trail heads across the meadows in the west of the district, offering plenty of stunning views along the way. After climbing the “Herrenholz”, the trail continues with a slightly steeper uphill section through heavily snow-cover ed forests. On reaching the ridge, you are treated to one of the finest views of Oberstdorf’s white valley basin and the surrounding mountains. Returning to the circular trail, we now follow the ridge across wintry glades with idyllic views of Reichenbach. A forest trail gradually heads to Widum at the foot of the small mountain, from where the village road leads back to Reichenbach.
Tip: There are two worthwhile little detours! Heading from Widum up to the Schöllang mountain church is very much recommended due to the beautiful view and the remarkable village chapel. After climbing to the Herrenholz, you should on no account miss the spectacular view of the Allgäu Alps. Options for breaks: Das Wirtshaus, Moorstüble Reichenbach
Gerstruben – a mountain village in the winter Length: 11 km Duration: 4 hours

From the Mühlenbrücke Bridge in Oberstdorf, a causeway follows the Trettach River into the picturesque side valley. The trail continues through the idyllic winter landscape to Dietersberg. Here, the ascent to Gerstruben up a steep Alpine road is the most demanding part of the hike. Nowadays, the mountain village with its historical buildings and small chapel are under heritage protection. Framed by the picturesque winter landscape, this is one of the Allgäu’s most beautiful sights! The descent starts by retracing the initial route. On reaching Dietersberg again, we recommend taking a different return route and crossing the Zwingbrücke bridge and the golf course, continuing past the idyllic Moorweiher to the Mühlenbrücke Bridge and Oberstdorf.

A winter excursion to the Freibergsee Lake Length: 8 km Duration: 3.5 hours
Altitude metres: 291 m Location: mid-altitude
At the west edge of Oberstdorf, the route heads over the Schlechtenbrücke Bridge to the Waldesruhe area, where you can visit the world’s first scientifically investigated energy site. The Bergkristallweg and Edmund-Probst-Weg trails then lead up to the Freibergsee Lake. At the top, a circular trail takes you all the way around the lake. If you want to extend the hike slightly or visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill, you should now follow the route to the right. By taking the left-hand option, it is not long before you enjoy a lovely view of the lake. This is one of the highlights of the hike. The return route takes you through the forest on the north side of the Freiberg. Here, a short, slightly steeper section leads downhill to the lower Renksteg.
After crossing the Stillach River, we return to a sunny stretch on the meadows to the south of Oberstdorf. Tip: You can avoid the ascent and descent by taking the bus to the Söllereckbahn valley station. A winter’s day in the Trettachtal Valley Length: 13 km Altitude metres: 211 m Duration: 4.5 hours Location: valley This winter hike passes the remarkable St. Loretto chapels on the southern edge of Oberstdorf and heads up the Burgstall climb to the Trettachtal Valley. After passing Germany’s southernmost golf course, glorious views open up as you head to the Christlessee Lake. Even in winter, the mysterious, crystal-clear mountain lake with a cobalt- blue shimmer never freezes. This is because innumerable springs on its floor prevent ice from forming. The hike continues along the old Spielmannsauer Straße and over the Truppersoybrücke Bridge to Spielmannsau. To the south, you can enjoy impressive views of the snow-capped peak of the Trettachspitze! In summer, this is the start of
the popular Alpine stage of the E5 long-distance hiking route from Oberstdorf to Merano. In winter, only the return trail remains. Following the Trettach River, the trail continues to the bridge at Gottenried. Tip: The Trettachtal Valley offers plenty of cosy and welcoming places to stop for a break! The Zeigersattel is without a doubt one of the most riveting viewpoints to be found on winter hikes in the Allgäu! From the exit of the Höfatsblick summit station, follow the Zeigersattel signs to the right. Depending on the level of snowfall, the groomed winter hiking trail can vary slightly from year to year. We therefore recommend that you look for a sign right at the start of your hike. After leaving the Edmund-Probst-Haus behind you, the trail initially descends towards two Alpine huts. Just before reaching these, it veers to the left and leaves the ski area. After a short, gentle climb, we reach the Zeigersattel – and a fantastic view of the heavily snow-covered landscape of the majestic Allgäu Alps. The Höfats, also known

as the queen of the Allgäu Alps, is just one of the countless impressive mountain peaks! To return, simply retrace your footsteps to the Nebelhornbahn cable car station. Be the first to leave your tracks in the untouched snow while enjoying the peaceful surroundings – all in harmony with nature. The heavily snow-covered winter landscape shows off its magical side with glistening powder snow and icy plants. It’s certainly worth exploring without skis, snowboards and lifts. Instead, try a pair of snowshoes, one of the oldest pieces of equipment for getting around in the snow. Every Wednesday, Tourismus Oberstdorf offers guided snowshoe hikes on Oberstdorf’s first snowshoe edu cational trail. The route takes participants to six different boards with clear information about snowshoe hiking and route planning. The hike is primarily aimed at guests with no prior experience, who want to try their hand at walking in the giant shoes. With a trained mountain guide, the participants follow the snowshoe educational trail and explore the Ried-Burgstallsteig region and the Oberstdorf great outdoors.
In doing so, they learn a great deal about snowshoe hiking itself as well as how to prepare a route, the risk of avalanches, the check list for use be-
fore a hike, the equipment and how to act in an eco-friendly manner. This prepares the participants for future trips out into the High Alpine terrain.
Snowshoeing taster course Every Wednesday, certified mountain guides demonstrate the perfect snowshoeing technique and introduce you to the Oberstdorf winter wonderland. Depending on snow levels, the courses are run from mid-December to early April. We advise taking along drinks and a snack. Breitachklamm Ravine Europe’s deepest canyon
Whatever the season, whether summer or winter, the Breitachklamm Ravine in Tiefenbach near Oberstdorf is open for your enjoyment all year round – with the exception of the snowmelt period and late autumn. When winter comes and the raging stream that sweeps through the gorge from the Kleinwalsertal Valley towards Oberstdorf transforms into bizarre ice sculptures and the impressive rock walls are covered in huge icicles, a particularly stunning natural spectacle is created. A visit is more than worthwhile whatever the weather. The broad hiking trail through the deep canyon provides excellent protection against the wind and bad weather. However, sturdy footwear is still a must. You can reach the Breitachklamm by heading along the B 19 (Sonthofen-Oberstdorf) towards Tiefenbach then following the signs. A large car park can be found by the entrance to the ravine. Alternatively, use the frequent bus service from Oberstdorf bus station to the Breitachklamm car park. After traversing the canyon and arriving in the Kleinwalsertal Valley, you can simply hop back on a bus to Oberstdorf from the Walserschanze bus stop. The nature

information centre by the entrance to the Breitachklamm offers you an interactive exhibition. Exclusive mountain life exhibits and an impressive, free film in the cinema room provide interesting and useful information about the creation and ecology of the unique natural spectacle. An evening torchlight hike through the bizarre icy and wintry landscape of the Breitachklamm is particularly enticing. A unique experience with unforgettable sights awaits you. The torchlight hikes are offered by the Breitachklamm Association from late December until well into March every Tuesday and Friday at 7 p.m. (weather dependent). The meeting place for the hikes is the Breitachklamm entrance building in Tiefenbach. You do not need to book in advance. Heimatmuseum Oberstdorf The mountain village museum The Heimatmuseum Oberstdorf (local history museum) is located in a 17th century period property in Oberstdorf. Fortune has it that despite a major fire in 1865 and the modernisation craze in the 1970s, the original core of the building is still intact. The museum opened in the historic premises in 1932 and has been continually expanded ever since.

Exhibits show how the destitute inhabitants of our mountain village survived, farmed the Alps, led the first visitors up into the mountains and learned to ski, among other things. You will also find the largest leather ski boot in the world – shoe size 480, over three metres long and one-anda-half metres high. Only those who are aware of the past can understand the present.

Fun and action for all The NTC Park by the Seealpe station on the Nebelhorn offers fun and action for all, bringing you winter sports in a very simple and entertaining manner. Pay the admission and spend a fun and exciting day on an array of different sports equipment. All of the recreational sports in the NTC Park by the Seealpe station are quick and easy to learn and great fun. Whether on the tubing track, a snowbike, a skifox or an airboard, pure winter fun is guaranteed. There is also plenty for kids to do on the Nebelhorn. In addition to the activities in the NTC Park, they are also awaited by exciting and

Snowbiking Want the sensation of riding a bike in the snow? Why not! A snowbike enables you to instantly conquer the mountain! Some 100 snowbikes are available to groups, families and individual guests in the NTC Park on the Nebelhorn. After a short instruction session from the NTC guides, you’re ready to go. You don’t need ski boots and can quickly enjoy the gentle pistes by the Seealpe station. What’s more, you will also be giving your back, upper body, stomach and legs a great workout. Thanks to the low centre of gravity, the risk of falling is far lower than with alpine skiing. As the rider is not attached to the bike, there are no leverage forces like those when skiing or snowboarding. Both kind on the joints and with a low risk of injury, this is a sport type that’s ideal for even sporty people of a more advanced age.
Airboarding Shoot down the piste head first. Airboarding is one of the fastest and most spectacular ways of boarding down a ski slope. Airboarding involves flying down the slope head first. You’ll soon fall head over heels with this sport!

Active and exciting: the story of how the mountains were formed The Bergschau (literally meaning “mountain show”) uses a fun and active approach to tell visitors about the evolution of the flora and fauna of the Allgäu Alps, how the mountains were formed and the links between people and nature. One of the four Bergschau centres is located in the Altes Rathaus (old town hall) in Oberstdorf and offers basic information about geology, nature and culture in the Allgäu Alps. You’ll also find fascinating insights into the history of the glaciers, the cohabitation of plants and animals and how people make a living in the mountains. Experienced staff members will happily help you with any questions or if you want any additional information. In addition to the Bergschau visitor centres with permanent natural history exhibitions, in summer you can also visit eleven Bergschau outdoor information points and hike five Bergschau trails. The coolest hotspot in the Allgäu at 2,000 m above sea level on the Nebelhorn, an abundance of snow and the starry sky within arm’s reach. The IgluLodge is a unique ice hotel that is newly built every winter and designed by passionate Allgäu artists. A bar made from pure ice catches the eye on the igloo site. orld Championship W Ski Jumping Arena The World Championship Ski Jumping Arena with its five jumps at the foot of the Schattenberg, where the opening jump of the Four Hills Tournament takes place every year, is always worth a visit. The hillside lift takes you up to the foot of the jump tower, from where the panoramic lift continues to the viewing platform. Oberstdorf has several extremely leisurely tobogganing slopes in picturesque settings near to the village, which are particularly ideal for children and infants. It has long-since belonged to a principality and has the oldest wooden chapel in southern Germany.
Reichenbach is famed for peace and quiet. Located at high altitude, the Gaisalpe offers a wild, natural toboggan run in winter.
The Tiefenbach district, best known for the impressive Breitachklamm Ravine, and the Rohrmoostal Valley are both enticing options on sunny days. Funkensonntag (Bonfire Sunday) 18 February 2018
At the start of Lent, on the first Sunday after Fasnacht (Carnival), huge bonfires light up the night’s sky in many open areas around Oberstdorf. The origins of this ancient custom are still unclear and there are many possible explanations. Some associate the bonfires with the many Easter and Midsummer fires and say that they burn all things wicked at the end of winter in order to strengthen the sun and ward off evil. This explains why a straw witch is symbolically set alight. Others associate the event with the fertility rituals and burnt offerings of the Celts. Today, Bonfire Sunday is a sociable occasion that’s great fun to watch as the tall wooden pyres go up in flames and blaze away against the night sky. Funke-Kiechle The deliciously sweet “Funke-Kiechle” are a firm favourite of visitors and locals alike and an integral part of any Bonfire Sunday celebrations. These tantalising, fried treats are only available on this one day. They are washed down with a cup of hot mulled wine and enjoyed in good company around the fire!

The wild “Klausen” of Oberstdorf
An ancient custom from pagan times As the time comes for cosy winter evenings, customs in Oberstdorf start to come alive. These include one of the oldest customs: the Allgäu “Klausen” processions. When people’s fears of evil spirits overpowered them on dark nights, the young Oberstdorf locals dressed up in fur garments, put on fur-covered heads with deer antlers and ran through the narrow streets rattling chains to drive away the evil spirits. For many years, only long-established Oberstdorf locals were allowed to join in. Today, this rule is no longer quite as strict. And it’s no longer only evil spirits that are hunted. Instead, it’s cheeky young ladies and curious spectators. On 06 December, the “Klausen” take over the Oberstdorf streets. Two days beforehand (St. Barbara), the women of Oberstdorf meet at nightfall. They don traditional everyday clothing from days gone by and head for the women’s procession, known as the Klausenbärbel-Treiben.
i Please note During the event, the Trachtenverein Oberstdorf (Oberstdorf Traditional Costume Association) ensures that things don’t get out of control. Despite this, the Klausen day is not everyone’s thing and even the locals often prefer to observe the spec tacle out of the window from the comfort and warmth of their own home. Children and people unfamiliar with the custom should particularly heed this advice! Please also note that the public infrastructure companies close by no later than 6 p.m. on these days and 98 % of gastronomy establishments are closed on these evenings.

What could feel more peaceful, lovely and cosy than listening to traditional folk music and the local dialect at Advent and Christmas time? In Oberstdorf, this is a calm and tranquil period. Whether lively or profound in Oberstdorf dialect, traditional melodies or classic songs – transport yourself back to days gone by and escape everyday life. Each Saturday at 5 p.m., the candles on the large Advent wreath in the Kurpark are lit in a jovial atmosphere. The diverse Advent programme then commences in the Oberstdorf Haus at 5.30 p.m. The stalls in the Kurpark and the Oberstdorf Haus are open from 3 p.m. Drink a mug of mulled wine with friends and enjoy the atmospheric music – or as the Oberstdorf locals would say in their fantastic dialect: “an Huigarte hong und dr Museg lose” (“have a gettogether and listen to the music”). Many Oberstdorf groups such as alpine horn blowers, yodellers or the
local band also contribute to the merry atmosphere. You can also look forward to music from people in traditional costumes, dulcimer music, readings and poetry in local dialect.

Start of the 66th Four Hills Tournament in the Oberstdorf World Championship Ski Jumping Arena
As the year draws to an end, over 35,000 spectators will once again pack the World Championship Ski Jumping Arena to celebrate the start of the 66th Four Hills Tournament. As per tradition, the world’s most prestigious ski jumping series will kick off in Oberstdorf on 29 and 30 December 2017. And the winner of the first jump will automatically become the favourite for overall victory. The series will continue on 31 / 12 / 2017 and 01 / 01 / 2018 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 03 and 04 / 01 / 2018 in Innsbruck and 05 and 06 / 01 / 2018 in Bischofshofen. The competition will be fierce with not only Andreas Wellinger, silver medallist at the last World Championships, but in particular also the athletes from Slovenia, Norway, Austria and Poland vying for victory. However, Florian Weidel, Secretary- General of the opening jump event in Oberstdorf, is well aware that surprise results can also occur at the Four Hills Tournament: “Every year, we look forward to the fantastic atmosphere here in the stadium. And the events of the last few years have shown us that it’s not always the top favourites who end up ranking the highest.”

The world elite from the cross-country skiing scene will head to Oberstdorf on 03 and 04 January 2018 Straight after New Year, Oberstdorf will host its second major sporting event of the winter: two stages of the FIS Tour de Ski, the world’s most prestigious cross-country skiing series, will be held on the World Championship trails in the Ried arena. Seven races over nine days are scheduled for the world’s best cross-country skiers. This winter, the World Championship Ski Jumping Arena in Oberstdorf will play host to the world’s best female ski jumpers for the fourth time. At the end of March, the World Cup final will be held on the normal hill HS 106, once again in the form of a double World Cup. In particular, the German ski jumpers in the team with twice-World-Champion and Olympic Champion Carina Vogt are hoping to finally join her at the top of the leader board. To do so, they will have to overcome competition from many nations: high-flyer Sara Takanashi from Japan and her team mates, the Slovenian and Norwegian teams and most likely one or another surprise athlete will make life difficult for the German Ski Association (DSV) team on their home hill.

The renovations to the ski flying hill are complete and the pre-World-Championship event within the scope of the World Cup 2017 was a roaring success with a fantastic atmosphere and top sporting performances. As such, everything is in place for an exciting World Championship event in the Stillachtal Valley from 18 to 21 January 2018. The top favourite is without a doubt last year’s double title winner Stefan Kraft from Austria, who delivered a closely contested duel with Andreas Wellinger in both of the individual competitions on the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill. Of course, the two top ski fliers will also face competition from athletes of all other nationalities too, as there are many who want to be named Ski Flying World Champion. Slovenia, Norway, Japan and Poland are just a few of the
countries from which other favourites will compete. This promises exciting days of ski flying for spectators in not only the individual competition but also, and above all, the team one. Of course, a fantastic entertainment schedule has also been planned for the four days at the ski flying hill. Dr Peter Kruijer, President of the Organisation Committee, is among those looking forward to the event: “Ski flying is the most prestigious discipline on the ski jumping calendar. Disabled-friendly advice from Tourismus Oberstdorf The Tourist Information Office in the Oberstdorf Haus now not only has a portable loop system but also a fully accessible advice counter. The portable loop system, which principally improves the advice services for people with a hearing aid, is positioned between the visitor and the adviser. The system picks up the sound of their voices using a built-in or external microphone and transmits appro-
priate inductive signals to the integrated ring loop. These signals are received by hearing aids (set the latter to position “T” or “MT”). This minimises ambient noise and improves the quality of the advisory services. Anyone wanting to use this system can find a help desk equipped with it at the back of the Tourist Information Office in the Oberstdorf Haus as well as in the Tourist Information Office
at the railway station. The respective counters are labelled with a clear pictogram. Guests who use a wheelchair can now be served at eye level by Tourist Information Office employees at the disabled-friendly counter in the Oberstdorf Haus. This counter is freely accessible for wheelchairs and makes it easier to provide advice. It is also labelled with a clear pictogram.

Visitors staying for several days can purchase Oberstdorf holiday tickets for 4, 7 and 14 days. These are valid on the buses and trains (excluding IC trains).Children under the age of 15 can travel for free when accompanied by a parent.
When staying in Oberstdorf, you will receive an Allgäu Walser Premium Card on your arrival. This is an Oberstdorf visitor’s card, which is provided by your host and entitles you to receive an array of free and discounted services.

Oberstdorf ski bus The ski bus to and from Oberstdorf’s Nebelhorn, Fellhorn and Söllereck ski resorts is free of charge for skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers in the district. To be eligible, you must be carrying alpine skiing, snowboarding or cross-country skiing equipment. Ski passes alone do not entitle you to free transportation.
