LAKEFRONT ARENA

Built for a cost of $38 million, Lakefront Arena opened its doors on Nov. 26, 1983, and has been the home of both Privateers men’s and women’s basketball for all but two of the past 32 seasons. In the past, the arena has also been the home venue for Privateers swimming and diving, as well as Privateers volleyball. Configured for Privateers basketball Lakefront Arena has 8,701 theatre style seats, along with 84 chairback seats for the Courtside Krewe, for an official capacity of 8,785. Coming into the 2014-15 athletic year, both men’s and women’s basketball had each played 380 games at the “friendly confines” with the men winning 289 games, and the women winning 283 games. Combined, both teams have won just over three-quarters of the games played by New Orleans student-athletes on Corchiani Court. Following major damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the arena reopened in 2008 after undergoing over $20 million dollars of renovations. The arena received state-of-the-art hurricane proof exterior paneling and roofing, along completely resurfaced exterior ramps. Improvements inside the arena, included brand new seats, a new basketball court, redone locker rooms, a multimedia room, brand new lighting and sound systems, and state of the art weight-rooms and training rooms for Privateers student-athletes.

Daktronics, enhancing the gameday experience for fans. Following the 2014 Sun Belt Tournament, brand new goals and shot clocks were installed as well. The arena is also home to the UNO Aquatic Center. Hosting high school, and other swim meets frequently, the Aquatic Center features an Olympic sized swimming pool, swimming locker rooms and a sauna. During the summer of 1997 a 50-meter swimming pool was added next to the arena which can be used by the general UNO population as well as for swim meets hosted by the Aquatic Center. Lakefront Arena is not only a great athletic venue, but is regarded as one of the finest concert venues in the country. Lakefront Arena is routinely ranked as a Top Stop for a venue its size and as a university venue. Configured for concerts, Lakefront Arena can seat anywhere from 1,500 to over 10,000 with parking spots available for around 4,000 cars. Besides annually hosting popular events such as Disney on Ice, the arena has a long history of hosting major concerts with shows ranging from Madonna to Demi Lovato and James Taylor and even Pope John Paul II over the last 30-plus years. HEAD COACH MARK SLESSINGER The 2014-15 season will be the fourth at the helm of the New Orleans Privateers men’s basketball program for Mark Slessinger. He is the 12th leader chosen in the Privateers rich basketball history. In the Privateers’ first season in the Southland in 2013-14, Slessinger helped guide New Orleans to third in their new conference in rebounding. Cory Dixon was an All-Southland selection and was second in the league in rebounds (7.7 per game). A school-record 13 players topped double-figures at least once in the 2011-12 campaign as the team posted a 1715 mark against a schedule of full-scholarship teams in his first season. Against a full Division I schedule in 2012-13, ten different players topped double-figures at least once on the season, in large part to the fast-paced offense and the school history altering performance by guard Rarlensee Nelson. Nelson finished the campaign ranking second in school history in single-season assists, and in games with 10 or more assists in a season. To date, Slessinger has won 73 percent of home games in his tenure at New Orleans, garnering a 27-10 mark. In Slessinger’s first season (2011-12), the Privateers won 13 home games, the most achieved by a New Orleans squad since 2002-03. Off the court, the Privateers remain visible on campus and in the community. The team’s presence parlayed into an increase in attendance with some of the larger student crowds during the 2013-14 season since the team returned to Lakefront Arena in 2008. Slessinger graduated from Aurora University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. He then coached at his alma mater as an assistant basketball coach during the 1995-96 season before moving on to Central Michigan, where he served as an assistant during the 1996-97 campaign. Following his run at CMU, Slessinger spent three years at Northland Pioneer College (Ariz.), the last two as head coach. His teams posted a 36-25 record with eight players signing on at the Division I level before he departed to join McConathy’s staff at NSU.

@CoachSless

Slessinger prepared for his first NCAA head coaching job by working for 11 years under Northwestern State’s Mike McConathy. Slessinger was the top assistant for McConathy -- one of the winningest coaches in Louisiana history -- while also serving as the Demon’s recruiting coordinator. The duo of McConathy and Slessinger not only graduated students at a rate of 85 percent, they turned around a NSU program that had struggled at the Division I level on the floor. During Slessinger’s tenure at NSU, the Demons won three Southland Conference titles and compiled signature victories over Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Oregon State and a 2006 NCAA Tournament first round victory over Iowa. Slessinger, a native of Bloomington, Indiana, resides in New Orleans with his wife, the former Toni Purvis of Williamston, N.C. and their two children, Nola and Holden.

ASSISTANT COACH KENYON SPEARS Kenyon Spears enters his third season with the New Orleans Privateers men’s basketball program, charged as Mark Slessinger’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator.

Kris Arkenberg enters his fourth season as an assistant men’s basketball caoch for the New Orleans Privateers. Arkenberg’s duties on the staff include the development of the team’s guards, and over the past three seasons UNO has seen significant production in the assist category from numerous members on the team’s depth chart. His most recent project was Issac Mack, who improved his assists per game from 0.8 in 2012-13 to a team-leading 3.3 per game in 2013-14. Mack was voted by his coaching staff as the team’s most valuable player.

Spears joins the Privateers’ coaching staff following a stint at Brown University as well as Wagner and his alma mater, Lamar. A 2001 graduate of Lamar with a bachelor of science degree in communications, Spears was a four-year letterman, a team captain as a senior and helped the Cardinals advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2000 following a successful run through the Southland Conference tournament. Upon graduation, Spears joined the staff at Lamar, assisting the Cardinals from 2002-2004 before joining head coach Mike Deane at Wagner in 2005, first as an assistant and then a Associate Head Coach. During his tenure at the Northeast Conference school, Spears was part of a staff which set school-records for wins (23) and conference winning percentage (.833) in 2007-08. Spears helped develop two first-team All-NEC performers, including the nation’s fourth-leading rebounder, while at Wagner.. A native of Nome, Texas, Spears currently resides in New Orleans.
