foreword

Transferring a series of seven banknotes from the “drawing board” to people’s wallets required many years of careful planning. In February 1996 the Council of the European 1 Janu nuary ary 2 002 w ill be re remembered as a milestone in the history hi ory of Eu Europ ropee . Th Thiis was the day when the euro banknotes and coin coinss were s uccessfu uccessfully introduced d in the euro area, markin rkingg th thee f i nal st step ep towards Econom nomii c and Monetary Unii on. B ut thi thiss w a s n o t just an administrative achievement. By us usin ingg t h e eu euro ro ba banknotes every da day, y, we are discovering Europea opeann in integr tegrat atio ion n fo forr ourselves. And so 305 million Europea opeans ns i n 12 co countr untries have fully em embraced the most tangibl ta blee s ymbo ym boll o f o ur shared identity: y: t he euro banknotes. Butt b ank Bu ankno notes tes a re no nott only a means o f payment, they are also al o pi pieces eces of cra craftsm ftsman anship, reflecting the soul of the nations ons i ss ssui uing ng th them. em. Our banknotes es re represent values to which ch al alll Eu Europ ropeans eans are deeply attached, hed, in particular open op ennes nesss a nd c o-o o-oper peration between our countries and betweenn E uro urope pe and the rest of the wor world. These shared ideals are a key fea id feature ture of the euro ba banknote designs.

Monetary Institute (EMI), the forerunner of the European Central Bank (ECB), launched a euro banknote design competition. On 13 December 1996 I had the privilege, together with Baron Alexandre Lamfalussy, President of the EMI, of unveiling the winning design series to the public. These of course became the banknotes we now use every day. The competition participants had to base their designs on the theme “Ages and styles of Europe” and/or use an abstract or modern design. A total of 44 entries were submitted by 29 designers or teams of designers. The designs have now been reproduced for an exhibition held at the ECB and other venues throughout Europe. It gives me great pleasure to invite you, the citizens of Europe, to share this view of history in the making.
