Today’s Gospel reading is interes!ng yet challenging. What direc!on do I go with this reading? Do I go with a house divided or go with church leaders who are demonizing Jesus. Have you ever been falsely blamed for something? How did it make you feel? In this passage, Jesus is accused by His family of insanity and accused by the religious leaders as satanic. Jesus was neither. There is nothing worse than having to defend oneself against an accusa!on which is untrue or unfounded. And when that accusa!on is based on an assump!on rather than truth or a fact, it makes defending yourself that much harder. This text is rife with implied and stated division; Satan vs. Satan, Jesus vs. His family, Jesus vs. the scribes, kingdom vs. itself, house vs. itself. Jesus states that where there is division, a house or a kingdom will not be able to stand. He is emphasizing the necessity of standing together as a family; just when His own family is divided. Typically, families seek to s!ck together. In fact, if a family does nothing else, it at least tries to stand together. Having two older brothers and sisters, I understand the necessity of standing together. Prac!cally every day of my childhood one of my brothers would beat me up or sisters pick on me. The trade-off however, was that I knew I would be protected should anyone outside the family threaten to lay a hand on me. Why because family s!cks together. A friend of mind spoke poorly of her parents’ day in day out but the moment that I began to agree with her; she turned on me! She could talk bad about her family but I could not. Why? Because families s!ck together. If you believe and trust in Christ Jesus, then you are a child of God. We are family, and families stand together. I believe this applies just as well, if not be$er, to the church. Standing together as a Church requires that we follow these rules. God first then family! As Director of Religious Educa!on, I am acutely aware that I need the “wider circle” of households of believers to support me and the catechist’ in sharing Christ with the larger community. I need them to have spiritual brothers, sisters, mothers and children within the Chris!an community in order for God’s will to be done in their lives. One of the most significant things I can do as a DRE is to see that the spiritual lives of our children transcends their family life; a rich, vibrant intergenera!onal parish with children, youth and their families, drawing them more deeply and fully into the will of God. A final thought on the scripture of today...here are some poten!al applica!ons to intergenera!onal and household ministry:

· · ·

2

In the kingdom of God, family life is intended to be an instrument of God’s will. Spiritual unity in families is vital for resis!ng tempta!on… A house that is divided is suscep!ble to falling away. In Christ, God creates a new “family” which transcends blood !es. In the Church children are everyone’s children. We are called to share together in the privilege and blessing of caring for one another beyond the circle of immediate family life.

WELCOME TO ST. JOHN PAUL

ST . VINCENT DE PAUL

|

SAN VINCENTE DE PAÚL

Today, Jesus looking around those seated in the circle said, “Here is my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother, sister and mother.” Through your alms#ving you are indeed doing the will of God and your gi$ placed in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box indeed brings Christ’s love and compassion to the poor.
