We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things we should have done. O Lord, have mercy on us. Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You declared to us in Christ Jesus our Lord. For His sake, grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy Name. Amen. P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. PSALMODY

P: The sea is His, for He made it; C: and His hands formed the dry land. P: Oh, come, let us worship and bow down; C: Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker. P: For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: The Lord has enlightened us in the true faith: C: Oh, come, let us worship Him. Psalm— Psalm 119. 97-105 P: Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. C: You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. P: I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. C: I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. P: I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. C: I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. P: How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! C: Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. P: Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. THE WORD—INSTRUCTION Hymn #540 With the Lord Begin Thy Task First Reading—

Exodus 32. 1-14

Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of 2 the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." And Aaron said to them, "Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your 3 sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me." So all the people broke off 4 the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, "This is your god, O Israel, that brought 5 you out of the land of Egypt!" So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD." 6 Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 7 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go, get down! For your people whom you brought 8 out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, 'This is your god, O 9 Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!' " And the LORD said to Moses, 10 "I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume 11 them. And I will make of you a great nation." Then Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said: "LORD, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a 12 mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, 'He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth'? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your 13 people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, 14 and they shall inherit it forever.' " So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Second Reading— Mark 12. 38-44 Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go 39 around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the 40 synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for 41 a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and was watching how the people put money into 42 the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow 43 came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor 44 widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they

all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." P: In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets. C: But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. [Hb. 1. 1,2]

Te Deum Hymn #250 Holy God, We Praise Thy Name Offering Offering Prayer after offerings are received: P: Receive, O God, our bodies and souls and all our talents, together with the offerings we bring before You because You have purchased us to be Your own, that we may live unto You. C: Amen.

THE PRAYERS Litany For The Peace Of The World P: O God, Father of all, over all and through all and in all: Have mercy upon us. O God, who gave Your blessed Son that we might not perish but have eternal life: Have mercy upon us. O God, whose Holy Spirit, indwelling our hearts, would lead us into the way of Your peace: Have mercy upon us. O God, who rule is over all the world, come among us with great power for our deliverance. Scatter the people who delight in war. Put to shame those who call evil good and good evil. Rebuke those whose greed for riches or power is threatening the world with destruction. Raise up in every place people of goodwill to be Your servants. Multiply them exceedingly, and give them a measure of Your Spirit that they may have wisdom, faith, and courage to create the conditions of peace. Hear our prayer, O Lord, and let our cry come to You. For the promise given of old that the meek shall inherit the earth: We bless and praise Your glorious name. For the angels’ song at Bethlehem of glory in heaven and peace on earth: We bless and praise Your glorious name. For the coming of Christ to be the savior of the world and the Prince of Peace, for His teaching and example, His life and death and resurrection, and for the wonder of His rule over the thoughts and lives of increasing numbers of people: We bless and praise Your glorious name.

That we may know and do the things that make for peace: Give us Your grace, O God of our salvation. That we may love our enemies and learn to overcome evil with good: Give us Your grace, You Who are kind toward the unthankful and evil. That we may remember Your love for all people and desire and work for the welfare of all: Give us Your grace, You in Whose sight every life is dear. That we may labor for peace on the basis of justice and of the common good: Give us grace, O Creator and Preserver of humankind. That we may make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all things our Lord Jesus Christ has commanded us: Give us Your grace, You Who desire all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. That Your Church throughout the world may be one, in complete obedience to You, and that Christians everywhere may work together with You and with one another for the salvation of humanity and for the healing of the nations, until the Day of Judgment, when the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ and He shall reign forever and ever: Give us Your grace, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father Almighty. Now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power both now and forever. Amen. P: Holy God, holy and most gracious Father, C: Have mercy and hear us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; for Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

P: I cry to You, O Lord: C: in the morning my prayer comes before You. P: Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. C: and uphold me with a willing spirit. P: My mouth is filled with Your praise, C: and with Your glory all the day. P: Every day I will bless You C: and praise Your name forever and ever. P: By awesome deeds You answer us with righteousness, C: O God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of the farthest seas. P: Bless the Lord, O my soul; C: and all that is within me, bless His holy name! P: He redeems your life from the pit C: and crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. P: Hear my prayer, O Lord; C: let my cry come to You. [Ps. 88.13; 51.12; 71.8; 145.2; 65.5; 103.1,4; 102.1]

P: Let Your merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of Your humble servants; and that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as are pleasing to You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. C: Amen O Father of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need, look with favor upon Your servants who are ill or suffering. Assure them of Your mercy, comfort them with the awareness of Your goodness, preserve them from the temptation of the evil one and give them patience in their tribulation. If it pleases You, restore them to health or give them grace to accept their afflictions; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Lord God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the Giver of life, we thank You for all the mercies you granted Eleanor during her earthly life, especially for calling her to faith in Jesus. Comfort those who mourn her death with the hope of the glorious resurrection and a happy reunion in heaven. Lead all of us to remember that we are mortal so that we will ever prepare our hearts to fall asleep in faith and finally receive the glory promised to all who trust in Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank You, that of Your boundless grace, for the sake of Your Son, You have given us the Holy Gospel, and have instituted the holy Sacraments, that through them we may have comfort and forgiveness of sin. We beseech You, grant us Your Holy Spirit, that we may believe Your Word and through the holy sacraments day by day establish our faith, until we at last obtain salvation, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same with Your mighty power and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. C: Amen P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ () and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: Amen. CATECHISM REVIEW: THE LORD’S PRAYER, SECOND PETITION P: What is the Second Petition of the Lord’s Prayer? C: Thy kingdom come. P: What does this mean? C: The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. P: How does God’s kingdom come? C: God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

 Luther notes: The good that we do to poor people, the friendship and blessings we show them, these same works not only will be witnesses on the final day that we were Christians and lived brotherly, but they will also be rewarded and repaid. Then one will come and boast: “Lord, he gave me a coat, a dollar, a loaf of bread, a drink of water when I was in need.” OLD TESTAMENT: Exodus 32. 1-14 These are the idols of the world: Mammon, gold, money, jewelry, trinkets, gluttony, drunkenness, dancing, the lusts of the world. And, oh, how many so-called Christians cherish and serve these idols. The worst part of it is that with this terrible abomination they take the Name of God and Christ on their lips, and adorn and beautify an evil cause with the Name of the Lord. … This intercession of Moses points to the New Testament Savior, the only Mediator Jesus Christ, Who pleads for the sinners that God would spare them in His patience and give them time for repentance, and He also takes our place in the battle. (Stoeckhardt)

EPISTLE: 1 Timothy 6. 6-10 We see from these words what a shameful thing the love of money…must be. What can be said about something that is more shameful than that it is a root of all evil? No evil is as great as that which service to mammon produces! From it grows love of self, lovelessness toward the neighbor, hatred, envy, and indifference toward Christ, His Word, and His grace. It results in enmity against God, a despising of heavenly goods, deception, murder, and hardness against the impulse of the Holy Spirit. Wherever the love of money and goods enters, the love for God departs. (Walther) GOSPEL: Mark 12. 38-44 When the widow put into the collection box only two small coins, the Master did not give her a recompense worth only two coins. Why was that? Because He paid no attention to the amount of the money. What he did heed was the wealth of her soul. If you calculate by the value of her money, her poverty is great. If you bring her intention into the light, you will see that her store of generosity defies description. (Chrysostom) PRAYER: O Lord God, heavenly Father, You have abundantly given us rich blessing and our daily bread. We pray that You would keep us from covetousness and awaken our hearts so that we will gladly give and share with the poor so that we may be found to be faithful stewards of Your goods and so will not have to suffer want in eternity when we come before Your judgment throne to give an account of our stewardship. Amen. LUTHER NOTES: We have heard Paul’s admonition against greed, which he describes as “the root of all evils.” He means of this life, so that we say nothing about the life which is to come. You see, the greedy man deprives himself of eternal life, because his heart is swollen with many concerns. Because he has all these worries, he is forced to fear the dangers of fire and of water. As many worries threaten him as there are grains of sand on the seashore. Thus he destroys this life as well as that which is to come, just as “godliness has the promise” (1 Tim. 4.8). Greed is the worship of idols. You see, greed worships money, but godliness worships God. The greedy man is uncertain and is deprived both of this life and that which is to come. (LW, XXVIII, 372)

Exodus 32:1-14 (RV1909) 1
