Congregational Diaries Source: New York Congregational Diary, 1776-1777, located at the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa. Excerpt: 8 August 1776 ♄. 8th. In the afternoon at 4 o’Clock Br. Shaukirk having been invited to to the Funeral of the Ensign Mr. Evans, went there; The directing in Expectation of another Minister’s officiating; but there was no other Minister present, and the directing officer desired Br. Shaukirk to make a Prayer at the house before they went away and to speak a little in the Church-Yard. Accordingly after the Soldiers were together &/ the Corpse was put in the Street, Br. Shaukirk stood standing/ on the Sloop and prayed made a short Prayer; upon which the Corpse was put on the Bier, cover’d with a black Cloth, & the Regimental Pall /, and then in the usual military Way they proceaded to the old Presb. Meeting House and its GraveYard; where Br. Shaukirk made a short address to the People and after the Corpse was interred, he concluded with The Grace of our Lord J. C. &c. The whole was conducted with much order and Solemnity.

The Great Fork of the Rippehanning [Rappahannock River] situated about twenty-six miles from the Upper Germans toward the “Patomick”; there reside just three German families, the others all Irish and English. Among them lives Mr. Thom[p]son, and for this reason there is more than one church.
