pastor’s corner Dear Parishioners… With regard to the upcoming Presidential Elections, I encourage all to exercise faithful citizenship and vote. “In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue and participation in political life is a moral obligation. This obligation is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. Next Tuesday, November 6, 2012, the national and local elections will be held. We urge all parishioners to exercise their right and responsibility to vote. To assist in your discernment in the elections, I have added a link to a video by Cardinal George, Archdiocese of Chicago on freedom of religion. To view this video, please go to www.archchicago.org and scroll down to U Tube. This will bring you to the page where you can click on the Freedom of Religion video. All issues need to be reflected on, in the light of the basic principles of the sacredness of human life and human dignity as well as the common good. And with regard to church property, including the parking lot, there are very specific guidelines from our Bishop as outlined in the instructions from the Virginia Catholic conference. Please keep in mind: Distribution of partisan campaign literature (e.g. leaflets, bumper stickers, etc.) on Church property is not permitted. If you discover someone engaging in such activity, politely ask them to stop and escort them off the property. If they will not comply with a polite request, the police (or sheriff) may be called to assist.

Our hearts and our prayers go out to all affected by the effects of last week’s storm.

May the saints be praised, Fr. Gerry

LITURGY AND MUSIC Thought for the Day “In the

face of the questions that prevailing cultures pose to faith and to the Church, we renew our trust in the Lord, certain that even in these contexts the Gospel is the bearer of light and capable of healing every human weakness. It is not we who are to conduct the work of evangelization, but God” Final Message from the Bishop’s Synod on the New Evangelization One week ago today, the Bishops gathered together for the last time to discuss and develop a message of hope and mission for all of us to renew our faith and spread to Gospel of the Lord. In this week ’ s Gospel, we hear Jesus say, “ He is One and there is no other than he. ” As we vote this Tuesday, let us remember to vote according to our Catholic conscience and remember to “ r enew our trust in the Lord ” for “ He is One and there is no other than he.”

Peace and blessings! Rayanne and Deacon Joe REMINDER: We need volunteers to decorate Christmas trees depicting countries around the world. We would like to have more trees from all different countries, just like we have booths at the festival with food from all different countries. So think about it over the next few weeks. It would be great to see trees with decorations from some countries not participating last year. We will be having sign-ups in November. Think about doing it with a team, or on your own! A sign for each country will be provided, and the location of your tree will be given to you at sign-ups. You MUST sign up to participate.

Beginning next week, we will be selecting a ministry of the month. We will provide information and contacts for that ministry so that you have a better understanding of how important the parishioners of Holy Family are to the success of our celebration of the Eucharist.
