What does Southern Germany have in common with San Francisco? Stuttgart is probably not the first place you'd expect to find brooding, ethereal indie rock, but up-and-coming band EVERDEEN subverts these expectations. With a sound that combines elements of indie, shoegaze, post-rock, and pop, EVERDEEN makes dark and dreamy indie rock. Psychedelic washes of fuzzy guitars, eerie electronic textures, and an undercurrent of driving post-punk beats provide the orchestration for singer-guitarist Sümeyra Dogan's introspective english lyrics, delivered in an almost hymnal whisper, with a voice that draws comparisons to British bands such as Daughter, the XX, and London Grammar. The band's propensity for British artists makes sense in light of their international background. After living in London for two years absorbing the flair and music, the half-German, half-Turkish Sümeyra moved to San Francisco, California where she formed both a relationship and songwriting partnership with American guitarist Ian Stahl. The couple relocated to Stuttgart, Germany, where with the addition of drummer Thommy Mross the trio began honing their sound, drawing on their diverse intercontinental influences. It didn't take long before the Stuttgart scene began to notice what EVERDEEN was doing. A self-released three song EP in 2017 lead to sold out club shows, live sessions, radio interviews, profiles on music blogs, a live television performance, and multiple festival dates, including a slot at the WAVES Festival and Music Conference in Vienna Austria alongside international acts such as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Forest Swords. Marked by extreme dynamics and a captivating energy, EVERDEEN's shows are augmented by live visuals, manipulated in realtime, which underscore the dreamlike quality of music. In 2018 EVERDEEN is set to release three new singles which capture this live energy in a collaboration with renowned German underground producer Ralv Milberg, known for his analog aesthetic and work with German punk and noise bands such as Die Nerven and Human Abfall. With these songs plus a continually growing repertoire of new songs, the young band is ready to continue to subvert expectations and show how Stuttgart/Southern Germany can also produce authentic indie rock ready for the international scene.
