Research Site (s): (1) Loma Alta, Guayas, Ecuador: (01o49'S 80o36'W) The Reserva Ecológica de la Comuna Loma Alta (RECLA) is in the northern third of the Comunity of Loma Alta's 6, 842 Ha, 17 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, due west of Manglaralto.
(2) Tangaras Reserve, Mindo, Pichincha, Ecuador Las Tangaras is a 48 hectare private reserve located west of the Nambillo River, two kilometers south of the village of Mindo in the Canton of San Miguel de Los Bancos, Pichincha, Ecuador.
Local Management Status of Research Sites: Loma Alta: Community owned. Private with NGO support. IBA. Community desires to have the area nationally protected as an Ecological Reserve, but this has not been completed as of 9/04. Las Tangaras: Privately owned Scientific names of primary species being studied: Loma Alta list: Community level project. See list for IBA status. Las Tangaras: Community level studies (see lists for Mindo, Ecuador & tables) Key Research Objectives: Loma Alta: 1) Monitor endemic and endangered species populations 2) Raise local awareness of endemic birds 3) Study hummingbird aggregations 4) Test hypotheses about avian movements between dry and moist forests 5) Do demographic modeling of various tropical bird species Las Tangaras: 1) Monitor endemic and endangered species populations 2) Raise local awareness about bird conservation 3) Study habitat preferences of different species 4) Do demographic modeling of various tropical bird species
Data Collection and Results: a). Data collected: During the past field season (2003-04) we netted 2,691 individual birds bringing our total netting records to 9,115. At Loma Alta we verified breeding displays by endangered Esmeraldas Woodstar hummingbirds. We collected data on nectar production in three species of flowers at Loma Alta. At Las Tangaras we compared bird species using riparian and upland sites that are in mature forest versus degraded secondary edge. b.) Progress - Data from Loma Alta was used to justify making the area an IBA. - Data from previous years have been compiled and published. c). Results Summary:
Loma Alta Teams 1-4, 2003 1. Breeding displays by endangered Esmeraldas Woodstar hummingbirds were observed in December of 2002 and 2003. The male perched on a leafless thin branch in the top of the canopy in the moist forest where he sallied out and back in lengthy and repetitive displays. No females were observed responding, but were present in the area. 2. Loma Alta became an IBA based on data collected about the following species

3. Nectar production in flowers study: We studied nectar production in three plants commonly used by hummingbirds in Loma Alta's fog forest. Soil moisture as determined by slope (treatment) affected nectar production in all three species (Psychotria alba, Hanstenia sp., and Gesneria sp). The plant species also differed in their nectar production. (Table 1, Figures 1 & 2) Table 1:
