Berlin traffic data
Freight transport
Freight transport is indispensable for the supply of goods to Berlin and the subsequent disposal of wastes. At the same time, freight transport is responsible for a large share of exposure to noise and pollutants and gives rise to substantial expenditure on maintenance. The promotion of freight transport by rail and inland navigation as well as environment compatible management of heavy-duty road traffic therefore have an important status in traffic planning in Berlin. Freight transport volume declined from 35.5 million tonnes in 2001 to 30.1 million tonnes in 2009. The reasons for this decline are varied. The

structural change in the Berlin economy, the downturn in construction activity and the switch in energy supply from coal to gas played a major role. Most goods are transported by road. The share of road freight transport in total freight transport volume is around 75 per cent, while rail and inland navigation each account for more than 10 per cent. Each year around 22.7 million tonnes of goods are transported by road, 4.2 million tonnes by rail and 3.2 million tonnes by inland navigation.

Further information on Berlin‘s commercial freight and port concepts can be obtained at www.stadtentwicklung.berlin.de/verkehr/ politik_planung/gueter
With all figures for the year 2009 the effects of the economic and financial crisis, which are not quantifiable, have to be considered. Derivation of general trends on this basis is not meaningful.
