or

Carrera de buscapalabras Word Search Race [20 minutes]

Objective: Reinforcement.

Use this activity as homework, extra credit, when transitioning between other activities or turn it into a competitive game! Place a word search worksheet face down on each student’s desk. Say, “En sus marcas, listos, ¡ya!” (On your mark, get set, go!) and let students flip over the word search and begin looking for the words. The first three students to find all of the words are the winners! Give students another two minutes to write the English word next to the Spanish word on the word search list. This is a great self-check for students to see how many of the words they know. Go over the Spanish words and their English translations with the class.

¡Olé! Bingo Instructions ¡Olé! Bingo [15-20 minutes]

Objective: Reinforcement.

Additional Prep: Copy the ¡Olé! Bingo pieces for yourself, cut them out and put them in a container. Give each student an ¡Olé! game board handout. Ask them to choose words from the list at the bottom of their sheet to write in the squares. Each student may also choose a free space (espacio gratis). Students mark the spaces on their board as you pick and say the words in Spanish. To play more than one game with the same board, call out a type of marker you will have students draw on their board for each game (a heart, a star, etc). When a student has gotten all of the words you have called out for a game, he/she must be the first to say, “¡Olé!” This student is your winner for that game. Ask a student to pick and call out words for the next game. Students must get: Any three spaces across (horizontal) Any three spaces down (vertical) Any three spaces diagonally The four corners The entire board Reverse ¡Olé!: Have all students stand up. Choose a word from the container. If a student has the word on their board, they must sit down. Continue play. The last person standing is your winner! (If you run into a situation where you have several students left and you call out a word and they all sit down, have those students stand up again. Call out another word. Continue play until you have one student left.)

Activity Instructions Dibuja el mes o la estación Draw the Month or Season [10-15 minutes]

Objective: Reinforcement.

Escribe los meses debajo de las estaciones Write the Months Under the Seasons [10 minutes]

Have students take a sheet of blank paper and fold it to make six even squares. Call out a month or a season. Tell students to write the month or season you say in the top left hand square. They must sketch three pictures of things that they think of when they hear that month. (Example: “diciembre” – students might sketch a Christmas tree, a snowman and Santa Claus.) Continue calling out months or seasons for students to draw for each of the rest of the five squares.

Get students into groups of three to five. Give each group a large piece of poster board and a marker. Have groups choose one person to be the “writer.” Tell the “writer” to write the seasons on the poster board as shown below. Then, tell the students that when you say, “En sus marcas, listos, ¡ya!” (On your mark, get set, go!) their task is to help the writer in their group write each month under the correct season. The group which does this the fastest wins!

Activity Instructions Peso Pictionary [10 minutes]

Objective: Reinforcement.

Prep: Make sets of holiday cards by writing on index cards. You will need one set of nine cards for each group of three or four students. Write a month in Spanish and a holiday in English on each card. Put each set of cards in a container. You will also need approximately 24 - 40 fake pesos (nine pesos per group). Text for holiday cards: Christmas - diciembre Thanksgiving - noviembre Valentine’s Day - febrero Fourth of July - julio Halloween - octubre St. Patrick’s Day - marzo April Fool’s Day - abril Mother’s Day - mayo Father’s Day - junio *Mention to your students that the peso is the currency of Mexico. Get students into groups of three to four. Give each group a whiteboard, a dry-erase marker and an eraser for their whiteboard. (Use blank pieces of paper and pencils instead if you prefer.) Have one person in each group start by pulling a holiday card out of the container. This person must draw a picture of something that represents the holiday and whichever student correctly guesses the holiday (in English) and the month it is in (in Spanish) gets to take a peso. Then, it’s another student’s turn to pick a holiday card and draw. Whoever has the most pesos at the end wins the game!
