A FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS When the Prinzipalmarkt glitters in gold, the gabled houses and churches are beautifully lit, the shops are festively decorated, Christmas trees adorn the streets and the aroma of fir sprigs and mulled wine fills the air, then what is most probably the best time of all begins in Münster: Advent. Five Christmas markets transform the Old Town into a winter fairy tale, their 300 stalls inviting visitors to stroll around, do some shopping and enjoy the atmosphere. AEGIDII With its marvellous crib, impressive wooden pyramid, fairytale world, bells ringing out every half an hour and lots of beautiful stalls, the Aegidii Christmas Market has something for all the family to enjoy as they stroll around.

RATHAUS The largest and oldest Christmas market in Münster welcomes visitors beneath a romantic canopy of lights in the inner courtyard of the Town Hall. There is something for all ages in the huge selection of ­jewellery and craft items, plenty of delicious things to eat and a nostalgic children’s roundabout.

ST. LAMBERTI-KIRCHE At the foot of the mighty St. Lamberti-Kirche, the little blue huts of the lights market create a special sparkle. Surrounded by magnificent gabled ­houses, the Christmas decorations and Münster’s largest Christmas tree compete in a bid to outshine one another. until Dec 22

KIEPENKERL In the little Christmas village around the statue of Münster’s Kiepenkerl, quaint stalls beneath a beautiful Christmas tree serve Westphalian specialities and display various handicrafts, inviting you to linger awhile and savour it all in the wonderfully cosy atmosphere.

GIEBELHÜÜSKESMARKT Münster’s newest Christmas market opens its doors against the medieval backdrop of the Überwasserkirche and with a splendid view the illuminated towers of St.-Paulus-Dom. A wide variety of craft items and special tasty treats can be found here. until Dec 22

SHOPPING EXPERIENCE All round the five Christmas markets, Münster’s shops invite you to browse through the wide selection of gifts on offer: beneath the Prinzipalmarkt’s arches, in the Ludgeristraße and Salzstraße pedestrian areas, on Stubengasse and Hansecarré, in the districts of Rothenburg, Kiepenkerlviertel, Kuhviertel, Alter Fischmarkt and Hörsterstraße, and around the station and the harbour. However much you have to spend, whether you’re looking for chic classics or highly fashionable accessories, culinary delights or rare antiques, Münster is full of small treasures which are hard to find anywhere else.
