Letter from the President and Executive Director

Our Mission The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life of children and adults, people with disabilities, and others with special needs, through tennis and education programs that are based on health, fitness, character-building and self improvement…building lives through tennis and education.

Dear Friends: One hundred and forty-two grants ago, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation began its life as the philanthropic entity of the United States Tennis Association. It was an idea that germinated in the minds of the USTA Board members and senior staff that came to fruition in the presidency of Judy Levering, moved forward in the term of Merv Heller, and grew and flourished with the help of Alan Schwartz and Franklin Johnson.

This report contains a summary of the accomplishments of the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation in the past two years. Revenue generation has been noteworthy, and we are grateful to you for your generosity, but we also measure achievement in human terms. How many students have gone on to college because of our scholarship program? How many children have a safe place to go after school where they can learn to play tennis and learn about healthy lifestyles? These are the other ways by which we measure success. The primary goal of the Foundation is to help children develop into healthy, educated, and productive members of their communities. With this in mind, in 2004, “Aces for Kids,” an initiative of the Foundation was created. We are delighted that so many programs across the country are in-sync with our philosophy of developmentally appropriate youth programming by providing homework assistance and tutoring, instruction about healthy nutrition and lifestyles, mentoring, college preparation classes, and access to computer technology to develop champion citizens as well as lifelong tennis players. We are grateful to the members of our Board of Directors who graciously give of their time and resources in support of our mission. Their service on our College Scholarship and Grant Proposal Review Committees is invaluable. In making our determinations, we rely on input from the USTA National staff, as well as from the USTA Sections and community volunteers to assist in the due diligence. They are our eyes and ears across the country and their advice is inestimable. After scholarships and grants are awarded, the Foundation staff maintains contact with the recipients and requires progress reports to make certain that your contribution and those of other donors are being spent according to their original intent. The USTA Tennis & Education Foundation is highly attuned to its role as a steward for the contributions of our donors and thus feels very strongly about the accountability of funding. We reserve a very special thanks for our immediate past President Pam Shriver for her dedication and service to the Foundation. Pam’s leadership and belief in our mission helped to put the T&EF on the philanthropy map and we truly appreciate her selfless giving and friendship. As you read this report, you should feel a sense of pride and achievement for what you have helped the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation to accomplish. Thanks to you, we look forward to “building more lives through tennis and education” in even more communities! Sincerely,

Patrick McEnroe President

Karen Martin-Eliezer Executive Director
