Bullying can cause serious and lasting harm and is happening at younger ages. Learn strategies and tools to use when speaking with your child about this modern epidemic.
B. Special Education
Learn about the Shared Path to Success (special education reform) and your rights as a parent of a child with a disability. Your child is entitled to a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. This workshop will give you resources to help you advocate for your child, including how to access a new initiative to support struggling readers.

Arts in the Schools Transitioning to Middle School

Stress: You can’t live with it and there’s no way around it! This workshop is designed to help you identify the stressors in your and your child’s lives and learn stress management techniques for a happier, healthier existence.
This workshop will train parents to be able to discuss the dangers of heroin, prescription drugs, binge drinking and other risky behaviors with their children in a well-informed, balanced manner. We will explore the science of addiction and introduce resources to help parents who have a child or young adult who is already experiencing substance abuse problems. Be part of the solution! Appropriate for parents of children of all ages.

SESSION 2: 11:00 A.M.–12:30 P.M.
We will begin with a short introduction to arts in the NYC public school system. Then Sundog Theatre, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides arts programming to schools throughout the city, will be conducting an interactive workshop for parents to show how the arts are integral in the learning process. Teaching artists will demonstrate engaging activities and parents will be encouraged to participate so they can experience how the arts promote confidence, team building, self-esteem and a connection to the curriculum.
J. Transitioning to Middle School
Listen to the experts discuss the process for students to go from the 5th grade in elementary school to the 6th grade in middle school, and learn what we as parents can do to help our children make that transition.

SESIÓN 2: DE 11 A.M. A 12:30 P.M.
Comenzaremos con una breve introducción a las artes en el sistema de escuelas públicas de NYC. En seguida, la organización sin fines de lucro Sundog Theatre Inc., que brinda programas de arte a las escuelas por todas partes de la ciudad, realizará un curso interactivo para los padres, a fin de mostrar cómo las artes son parte integral del proceso de aprendizaje. Los maestros artistas mostrarán actividades participativas y se animará a los padres a que participen para que puedan experimentar de qué modo las artes fomentan la confianza, la formación de equipos, la autoestima y la conexión con el plan de estudios.
