SPAN  472:  Spanish  Phonetics  &  Phonology   T-­‐Th    12:00-­‐1:15  PM      Classroom:  Aquia  Building  346   Sonia  Balasch,  Ph.D.  ([email protected])   Office:  Room  332    Aquia  Building   Horas  de  oficina  &  tutoría:  Monday  (5:00  –  6:30  PM)  and  Tuesday  (2:00  –  3:30  PM)   COURSE DESCRIPTION SPAN   472   is   a   3-­‐credit   semester   course   for   students   of   Spanish   who   have   completed   Span   385.     Following   the   Course  Information  from  the  George  Mason  (GMU)  University  Catalog  (http://catalog.gmu.edu),  this  course  is  an   “[i]ntroduction   to   the   analysis   of   the   Spanish   sound   system,   both   phonetics   and   phonology.     Topics   include   the   articulatory   system,   sound   production,   the   classification   of   vowels   and   consonants,   phonetic   transcription,   the   mental  representation  of  sounds,  variation  and  accent,  and  processes  of  sound  change,  among  others.”  Phonetics   and   phonology   are   branches   of   my   specialization:   Linguistics.     You   have   dedicated   a   deal   of   time   and   effort   in   studying   Spanish   grammar   and   putting   your   knowledge   in   writing,   speaking   and   listening   this   language.   In   this   course   we   will   study   the   sounds   of   Spanish   (Spanish   Phonetics)   and   how   these   sounds   function   (Spanish   Phonology).   This   course   is   the   gateway   to   improve   your   Spanish   pronunciation   and   to   gain   a   better   understanding   of  its  rich  regional  differences.  I,  as  your  instructor,  will  be  devoted  to  create  a  welcoming  environment  where  you,   as  a  student,  will  be  both  the  center  of  the  class  progress  and  the  necessary  leading  guide  of  my  class  preparation.   Welcome  aboard!   LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Improve  Spanish  pronunciation:  Produce  native-­‐like  sounds  in  the  pronunciation  of  Spanish.   2. Understand   and   analyze   the   contrasting   differences   between   the   sounds   of   Spanish   and   the   corresponding   sounds  in  English.   3. Incorporate  the  use  of  linguistic  terminology  to  describe  the  articulation  of  Spanish  vowels  and  consonants.   4. Use  the  phonetic  alphabet  accurately  to  transcribe  Spanish  speech.     5. Appreciate   and   identify   traits   of   phonetic   variation   between   the   different   variants   of   Spanish,   both   in   Latin   America  and  in  Peninsular  Spanish.     6. 2.    Homework  (HW)   There   are   oral   and   written   HWs   from   the   textbook   already   scheduled   in   the   syllabus.  Both  types  of  HWs  will  enable  you  to  practice  and  master  the  material   and   class   discussions.   The   written   HW   will   be   collected   selectively:   the   30% instructor   will   announce   at   the   beginning   of   the   class   if   the   HW   assigned   for   that  day  will  be  collected.  Therefore,  the  best  advise  is:  have  your  HW  available   and  well  presented  to  hand  it  out  in  each  class. 3.    THREE  written  partial  exams     Each   partial   exam   is   already   scheduled   in   the   syllabus.   There   is   no   make-­‐ups.   Medical   emergencies   or   special   situations   that   imply   your   absence   should   be   brought  to  the  attention  of  your  instructor  as  soon  as  possible.  If  you  know,  in   advance,  that  you  will  miss  an  exam  for  an  official  University-­‐excuse  absence  or   30% a  religious  observance,  it  is  mandatory  you  let  the  instructor  know  before   the   date  of  the  exam.   Failure   to   do   it   will   grant   you   a   zero   “0”   in   your   exam.   Given   the   nature   of   the   subject   of   this   course,   it   is   highly   possible   that   material   of   previous  exams  will  necessarily  appear  on  later  exams.

4.    Written  final  exam   The   written   final   exam   is   cumulative.   University   Policy   requires   students   take   the   final   exam   on   the   date   assigned   by   the   Office   of   the   University   Registrar.   25% The  final  exam  for  our  course  is:  12/17/2015  (10:30  AM  -­‐  1:15  PM).     Organize  your  travel  plans  accordingly.
