Whether you work full-time or part-time or just need an occasional caregiver, quality child care is a necessity for both you and your child. While no one can replace a loving parent, an excellent child care provider can enrich your child’s life and give you peace of mind that your child is in good hands.

For some, choosing quality child care is simple—a favorite family member offers to care for your child. For others, the search turns into a series of phone calls, questions and visits to child care providers. In other words, you might spend a great deal of time searching for the right caregiver.

This resource guide includes tips, checklists and vital information to help you find quality child care to help parents ask the right questions, locate the right resources and ultimately, find the best possible care for their children.

GETTING YOUR SEARCH STARTED Determine what your needs are first. Trust your own instincts-You know best the right child care arrangement, the one that meets your needs so that you can keep on working, learning, parenting and smiling. oo Write down what you want from your child care provider. Think about what your child may also want. oo Talk to the staff at your local resource and referral agency, read parenting publications, and ask trusted friends or co-workers for references on child care providers and programs. oo Think about what you can afford. Check into any child care financial assistance through the State or your employer. What will your monthly budget allow? oo Call caregiver and ask about staff-to-child ratios, costs, the learning opportunities offered, and whether the provider is licensed. Remember, there may be times in the day when a child care provider is unable to speak with you because she is caring for children. You may be asked to call back at a certain time or to stop by and visit.

SEARCHING FOR INFANT/TODDLER CARE When looking for quality care for infants and toddlers, look for a provider who seems to enjoy your child by talking and interacting with her in a warm, friendly way. It is important that your little one is included in activities but stays safe when around older children. Keep these questions in mind when looking for quality infant and toddler care: oo Does the provider keep a clean diaper changing area which can be disinfected after every diaper change? oo Does she wash her hands after every diaper change and between diaper changes? oo What are the sleeping arrangements? Where are cribs located? oo What experience has the provider had with infants and toddlers? oo Who supplies the diapers? Formula? Baby food? oo How is your infant fed? Is she held and cuddled with every bottle feeding? Fed on her own schedule? oo Does the provider encourage you to bring breast milk and stop in throughout the day to breast-feed your baby? oo Is there a special outside play area for infants and toddlers? oo What are the ages of the other children? oo What is the provider’s plan for dealing with separation and attachment issues which happen during the first years of life? oo Does the provider ask you what your child likes and needs? oo Does the provider read, sing, and provide toys that are appropriate for your child’s age?

SEARCHING FOR PRESCHOOL CARE Preschoolers need room to run, jump, climb, and socialize. Look for a provider that can expose your child to books, toys, art, music, and “share time,” which will help him prepare for school without pushing him too much. Keep these questions in mind when looking for quality preschool care: oo What is the preschool’s daily schedule? oo Do the providers interact with the children and stay close to observe them? oo Do the providers get down to the level of the child? Is eye contact being made? oo Do the children respond in a positive way to the providers? oo Do you see smiles exchanged? oo With regard to art projects, does the provider believe that process or product is the more important? oo Are there creative materials for pretending so that the children can use their imagination at all times? oo How much climbing, running, or jumping will the children have each day? oo Is correct language used? oo When are books used? Is there a regular story time? oo Is there a balance between active and quiet play? oo Is there child-sized equipment? oo Are toys stored within easy reach of the children, or must they always ask an adult? oo How is toilet training handled? oo Are children required to take a nap? oo Are children encouraged to help with cleanup?

AFTER VISIT oo Review the caregiver’s written policies and procedures. Determine when the program is closed and what the policy is for late pickup or illness. oo Check references. Talk with other parents who have children in the program. oo When you have narrowed down your choices, contact two important agencies that will help check on the past history of providers: your local Community Care Licensing and/or TrustLine. Piense también en lo que su niña pudiera desear  Hable con el personal de su agencia local de recursos y canalizaciones, lea publicaciones sobre la crianza y pida a sus amistades de confianza o compañeros de trabajo que le den referencias de proveedores y programas de cuidado infantil.  Piense en lo que usted puede pagar. BUSCANDO CUIDADO PARA UN BEBÉ O NIÑO PEQUEÑO Cuando esté buscando cuidado infantil de calidad para su bebé o niña pequeña, busque a un proveedor que parezca congeniar con su niña cuando le habla y se relaciona con calidez. Es importante que su pequeña se integre a las actividades, pero esté segura con niños mayorcitos. Tenga estas preguntas en mente cuando esté buscando cuidado infantil de calidad para su bebé o niña pequeña:  ¿Tiene el proveedor un área limpia para cambiar pañales y desinfectarlo después de cada cambio de pañal?  ¿Se lava las manos después de cada cambio de pañal y entre cambios de pañal?  ¿Dónde duermen los niños? ¿Dónde están las cunas  ¿Qué experiencia tiene el proveedor con bebés y niños pequeños?  ¿Quién surte los pañales, la formula o los alimentos para los niños?  ¿Cómo alimentan a su bebé? ¿La abrazan cada vez que le dan el biberón? ¿La alimentan siguiendo el horario de ella?  ¿La invita el proveedor a traer su leche materna y a visitar el centro de cuidado infantil durante el día para amamantar a su bebé?  ¿Hay algún lugar al aire libre para que jueguen los bebés y niños pequeños?  ¿Cuáles son las edades de los otros niños?  ¿Cuál es el plan del proveedor para que la niña se acople a la separación y al apego durante los primeros años de vida?  ¿Le pregunta el proveedor a usted que le gusta y que necesita su niña?  ¿Les lee y canta a los niños y les da juguetes adecuados a la edad?

BUSCANDO CUIDADO PREESCOLAR Los niños de edad preescolar necesitan un lugar para correr, brincar, trepar y socializar. Busque a un proveedor que exponga a su niño a los libros, juguetes, arte, música y tiempo para compartir. Esto le ayudará a prepararse para la escuela sin tener que insistirle demasiado. Tenga en cuenta estas preguntas cuando esté buscando cuidado preescolar de calidad:  ¿Cuál es el programa diario del preescolar?  ¿Se integran los proveedores a los niños y los vigilan de cerca?  ¿Se inclinan al nivel de la estatura del niño? ¿Se miran a los ojos?  ¿Reaccionan los niños de forma positiva a los proveedores?  ¿Observa el intercambio de sonrisas?  En cuanto a proyectos de arte, ¿qué cree el proveedor que es más importante, el proceso o el producto?  ¿Hay material creativo para actividades de pretender (hacer de cuenta) para que los niños puedan usar su imaginación en todo momento?  ¿Cuánto tiempo tienen los niños a diario para trepar, correr o brincar?  ¿Se usa el lenguaje correcto?  ¿Cuándo se usan los libros? ¿Hay un horario establecido para la hora de cuentos?  ¿Hay un balance entre el juego activo y el juego en un ambiente tranquilo?  ¿Hay equipo a la medida de los niños?  ¿Se guardan los juguetes en un lugar de fácil acceso para los niños o tienen que pedírselos a un adulto?  ¿Cómo los enseñan a usar el sanitario?  ¿Tienen los niños que tomar una siesta?  ¿Se anima a los niños a ayudar a recoger?

DESPUÉS DE LA VISITA  Repase el reglamento y procedimientos del proveedor de cuidado. Determine a qué horas cierra el programa y el reglamento para pasar a recoger a su niña si la recoge más tarde o por enfermedad.  Pida referencias. Hable con los padres de otros niños que estén en el programa.  Cuando se haya decidido por algunos, comuníquese con dos agencias importantes que le ayudarán a revisar los antecedentes de los proveedores: Su oficina local de licencias (Community Care Licensing) y TrustLine (1-800-822-8490).  Déjese guiar por sus instintos. Usted es quien mejor sabe cuál es el cuidado infantil más propicio y si los proveedores satisfacen sus necesidades para que usted siga trabajando, aprendiendo, criando y sonriendo

About First 5 The Children and Families Commission (First 5 California County Commissions) were created in December 1998 in order to realize the benefits of Proposition 10 (California Children and Families Act) for the county’s youngest residents and their families. The act created a system of programs for the purpose of promoting, supporting, and improving the early development of children from the prenatal stage to five years of age.
