1832 (May 28): Entire letter written by Edward Walter Bonham from ´Shuchtinabad´ to Brighton, UK (mailed on June 8), with fascinating content „I am living in a tent as the village is a collection of small round huts and dirty to a degree...dried cowdung is the fuel in this country...the Mines are situated close by which is the reason I am staying here. I left Tabriz on wednesday last the 23rd...on one of Capt. Campbell´s horses...I reached this place (104 miles) in three days...this place is 4 miles from Meanna on the direct route from Tabriz to Teheran and celebrated for its bugs...“ letter continues from Gultuppa on June 7 „I went out to seek these goats..what they call Bouuetins in Switzerland (Chamois?) I have sent a young one home to Thornton which will be a curiosity if it arrives alive as they are said to be extinct in Europe...its is now two months or more since a Tartar has been in from Constantinople, it is too bad Mr. Cartwright does not send them (with the Post) more regularly...this letter goes tomorrow by a Gholam (Post-Rider) who takes it to Erzeroum to be forwarded by a Pasha´s Tartar...“. In den Jahren 1886 bis 1900 gab es mehr als 250 private Postdienstleister in etwa 170 Städten des Deutschen Reiches. Am 31. März 1900 wurde diese Phase der deutschen Postgeschichte zwangsweise beendet. Das Deutsche Reich ließ sich das Postmonopol 8,2 Millionen Goldmark an Abfindungen für die privaten Firmen kosten. Fast 100 Jahre später, seit 1. Januar 1998 wird durch die sukzessive Aufhebung des Postmonopols ein neues Kapitel privater Briefbeförderung geschrieben. Die Publikationen der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Privatpost-Merkur, "Privatpost" und "Merkur-Briefe" erscheinen dreimal jährlich. Sonderschriften zu einzelnen Themen werden in unregelmäßigen Abständen herausgegeben. Die Zeitschrift "Privatpost" beschäftigt sich mit den privaten Briefdiensten Deutschlands im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert sowie mit internationalen Lokal- und Privatpostanstalten. PRIVATE STADTPOST IM DEUTSCHEN KAISERREICH Das Sammelgebiet ‚Private Stadtpost im Deutschen Reich‘ entstand dank einer Besonderheit in der Gesetzgebung des Deutschen Reiches: Bis zum 31. März 1900 erstreckte sich das staatliche Postmonopol lediglich auf verschlossene Briefe im Fernverkehr. Diese im Nachhinein häufig so genannte „Lücke im Postgesetz“ ermöglichte es privaten Postdienstleistern, zum Teil sehr erfolgreiche Konkurrenzunternehmen zur Reichspost aufzubauen wie etwa in Berlin mit der „Berliner Paketfahrt“ oder in Hannover mit dem dortigen „Mercur“.
Dieses Sammelgebiet stand viele Jahrzehnte im Schatten der staatlichen Briefmarkenausgaben und wurde von vielen als nicht ernst zu nehmen belächelt. Dies, obwohl sich immer wieder namhafte Philatelisten wie Artur und Georg Glasewald, Carl Schmidt, Dr. Franz Kalckhoff oder Emil Mewes damit befassten. Noch heute ist das Ende der 1930iger Jahre von Carl Schmidt verfasste „Handbuch der der deutschen Privat-Postwertzeichen“ ein klassisches Standardwerk dieses Gebietes, ähnlich wie sein Handbuch über die Lokalpost Russlands. Große Sammlungen wie etwa im Berliner Museum für Kommunikation oder im British Museum in London sind heute noch zu bewundern. Spätestens mit der Versteigerung der GlasewaldSammlung in den 1980-Jahren hat das Sammelgebiet den Ruf eines Orchideenfaches abgelegt. In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten ist umfangreiche Literatur zu diesem Thema entstanden, die neben einer ausführlichen Katalogisierung der Marken und Ganzsachen viele Einzelheiten zur Geschichte der Privatpostfirmen zusammengetragen hat. Möglich wurden diese Forschungen auch durch die Öffnung vieler Archive in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und dem damit verbundenen Zugang zu
The Private City Post in Germany was made possible by a special German law of the German Empire: Until March 31, 1900 the postal monopoly of the government was only applicible for sealed long distance letters. This so called "backdoor within the postal regulations" allowed private enterprizes to open and run private postal services as very sucessfull competitors to the governmental German Post Service. For example, in Berlin, the "Berliner Paketfahrt" or in Hannover the so-called "Mercur". This area has been treated for many decades like a second class collectible in comparison to the official Stamp issues, and many collectors did not even consider these collectible, regardless of the fact that even well established collectors such as Artur and Georg Glasewald, Carl Schmidt, Dr. Franz Kalckhoff or Emil Mewes looked at these. Regardless of the long history of private postal services the research has still a long way to go. This becomes even more visible when a large collection comes onto the market and unknown pieces are discovered. The collection offered here by a French collector is a great example. The collection, based on the well known collection of A. Pfotzer - a co-worker of Carl Schmidt - was developed during the mid 20th Century. It contains a very impressive selection of stamps with many, partially unknown trial prints and essays, for example the Gutenberg-issues of the city of Frankfurt/Main. The collection contains rare destinations of the "foreign traffic of the Leipzig Courier". The undisputable hightlights are the issues of Colmar, Mulhouse and Strasbourg as well as the issues of Metz.
Trotz dieser langen Geschichte sind die Forschungen zu diesem Gebiet keineswegs abgeschlossen, was sich besonders dann zeigt, wenn eine große Sammlung auf den Markt kommt und bisher unbekanntes Material auftaucht. Ein solches Beispiel ist die im Folgenden präsentierte Sammlung eines französischen Sammlers, die, aufbauend auf der Sammlung von A. Pfotzer, einem Mitarbeiter von Carl Schmidt, in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts entstand. Sie beeindruckt vor allem durch ihren Markenteil mit vielen, teilweise bisher unbekannten Probedrucken und Essays wie z. B. bei der Gutenberg-Ausgabe von Frankfurt am Main. Auch der Auswärtige Verkehr des Leipziger Courier ist mit seltenen Destinationen vertreten.
