Mission Statement Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is a Christ-centered community in the Roman Catholic tradition. We try to share the Good News of salvation with others. As a diverse community, we value and respect individual differences. As God’s people, we gather in the Spirit to pray, to celebrate the sacraments, to teach, to learn, to console, to rejoice, to minister and to renew our faith with one another.

Notes from the Pastor

Notas del Párroco

During the past two weeks, the first reading in our daily Masses has been from the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Old Testament, which describes, first, the creation of the world, then the story of Adam and Eve, their temptation by Satan, their fall from grace, and finally their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. After that, we’re told of the birth of Adam and Eve’s first children, the brothers, Cain and Abel, and the terrible rivalry that develops between them as they grow to manhood. The Church’s understanding of the Holy Scripture is not that these stories from Genesis represent something literal or scientific; instead the Creation stories of Genesis express something far more profound about the human condition than science can ever tell us. For example, in the narrative of Cain and Abel, we begin to see the consequences of Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience. From now on, even among brothers, there will be jealousy and envy. In this case, Cain is a farmer and Abel is a shepherd, so there is jealousy about land and property. And there is envy and hatred when one brother feels the parents love the other brother better. This is very much our human inheritance, isn’t it? - these family rivalries and competition and resentfulness. So in so many ways, Cain and Abel, the children of Adam and Eve, represent an even further alienation from God since their parent’s original sin of going against God’s commandment, to the extent that Cain commits the worse sin of all - murder, killing his own brother in a jealous rage. The Bible tells us that Cain was a farmer while Abel was a shepherd. For that reason, Biblical scholars have suggested that their story perhaps represents an early conflict between nomadic wanderers and those who had chosen to settle down and cultivate the land and build permanent villages. We know that in ancient times people who herded sheep and goats and other animals were usually nomads with no fixed place to live, instead they wandered here and there to seek food and water for their flocks. Cain, on the other hand stands for those who had decided to remain in one place, to put a claim on the land, and to till and plant the soil for a living. There was no doubt friction between those two groups. After Cain kills Abel, Cain himself is punished by being pushed off the land and made to wander with no place to stay. Eve, for her part, had another son, Seth, and probably many more children who became the ancestors of the whole human race. Some of these children remain faithful and obedient to God’s covenant; others do not, and so the world goes on one generation after the next. But God constantly calls us to return to him, and it is to that call that we try to respond Father Ulysses.

Padre Ulysses.
