KEY BENEFITS OF MOBILE DESIGN STUDIO: • Actively involves Stakeholders in the process of design of the facility. • Saves time and money for the Client, Architect, and General Contractor by limiting the amount of time spent on revisions. • Provides 3D models to facilitate cost control and project estimating. • Provides conceptual framework for Project Specifications. • Eliminates surprises typically incurred at permit submittal.

We have a very unique method of designing a project called Mobile Design Studio, where we design on site. We bring on site our team of experienced designers, who use a combination of modeling software and traditional hand drawing, to produce a package that synthesizes input from major stakeholders of the project. At the meeting, in addition to the Client, we like to have the Mall Manager, Operations Manager, Leasing Manager, Business Development, and the Contractor in attendance or remotely available so we can access their knowledge to produce a comprehensive, and cohesive design concept. We then begin to design and draw the building while on site. Our goal is to have an informed design package that incorporates input from all important resources, eliminating the typical back and forth that takes time, effort, and additional cost.

This super regional mall was completely renovated, centered around the concept of bringing the outdoor lifestyle shopping concept inside the mall. The existing tenant bulkheads were raised, two-story elements were constructed, along with outdoor elements in the furniture and lighting will bring this concept to life. The MDS was very beneficial with this project. The ADC team met the client on site for a week to walk the property, while surveying existing conditions and coming up with initial design concepts based on the information gathered. The MDS speeds up the entire process by bringing the team, skills and their necessary equipment to the project from the beginning. Repeat visits at various critical stages of the project were also crucial to the project’s success.

Visiting the project site at various milestone phases of the project is very important to make sure everything is moving along and following the design intent of the construction documents. We also visited the site to make sure the General Contractor as well as the Construction Team had all their questions answered. With renovation work comes many unknowns and on-the-fly design solutions for all discoveries in the field.

n diesem Jahr wurde das Büro Architecture Design Collaborative (ADC, USA) von den LIT Awards in Los Angeles mit dem Preis ‚Lichtdesigner des Jahres 2017‘ ausgezeichnet. ADC gewann in der Kategorie „Beleuchtung in der Innenarchitektur“ mit den Projekten „The Cloud“ und „The Wave“ in der Perimeter Shoppingmall

in Atlanta/USA.

his year, Architecture Design Collaborative (ADC) has been awarded with Lighting Designer of the Year 2017 by LIT Awards in Los Angeles. ADC won in the category ‘Interior Architectural Illumination’ for ‘The Cloud’ and ‘The Wave’ projects at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta. Architecture Design Collaborative is providing a

full range of architectural design services, comprehensive interior design services, developer collaboration, renovation & repositioning and site planning. Craig Chinn, the president and the principal of ADC is interviewed by Helena Horn.. HH: What would you say is the role of lighting in your work and your projects? CC: I approach lighting as an integral part of the design. Lighting is part of the overall, not an afterthought. For Example, the owners of the Perimeter Mall, in Georgia, wanted to light the corridors with a feel of being outdoors. I, and Alexandra Gomez, led the team that designed “The Cloud” to mimic light particles found in clouds. The effect was lighting that resembled natural clouds, adding to the outdoor feel. HH: Do you have a special light philosophy? CC: I make sure it complements the design and adds to the overall concept of the project. HH: Architecture Design Collaborative, a multi-disciplinary architectural and interior design firm is working with the use of a ‘mobile design studio’ concept. In which way it helps you in fast, accurate decision-making? CC: The ability to quickly sketch a concept with a client allows for instant feedback and revised designs. HH: The project of Perimeter Mall was intended to provide a dynamic lighting solution to a dim lit corridor on the 2nd floor of the mall. How do you found a solution to design a creative light source? CC: In this instance, with The Cloud we held an in house design charrette with our design staff and selected a few unique concepts for the client to select.

HH: What effect does the Wave light have on the shoppers? CC: They are excited to see the organic movement of light inside the building. This is an unexpected experience in the mall world. HH: For the Cloud the spatial situation was to rejuvenating a dark corridor while relating to an outdoor lifestyle in an indoor environment. Why did you opt for a light diffusing system that would mimic that of sprinkled light particles found in clouds? CC: The design was meant to add to the overall architectural improvements of the mall and to bring in some softness and light. HH: How did you manage that the light fixture resembles a natural cloud? CC: For all of our projects we model designs, numerous times, until we have the look desired by the client. In this case, we modeled until we had a soft look that transformed as you walked along the mall. ADC works collaboratively with our clients, our vendors, and the design team to create the distinctive look of all of our projects. Collectively this team brings a wide range of expertise across many design and related disciplines. Craig Chinn, AIA | Principal of Architecture Design Collaborative, Laguna Hills/USA p

CENTRAL PERIMETER

WHAT’S IN STORE W

After its multimillion-dollar renovation, Perimeter Mall and its surrounding area boast a more enticing selection than ever. hen Perimeter Mall opened in 1971, it was the first suburban mega-mall outside Atlanta. “It was the genesis for Perimeter Center, the largest commercial real estate submarket in the Southeast,” says Bill Baker, the mall’s senior general manager. There wasn’t much surrounding it back then. But today, businesses and residents want to be close to the mall. Within 5 miles, there are 29 million square feet of office space, 6 million square feet of retail, and about 3,500 hotel rooms. Two new hotels are set to open in 2017. UPS, Cox Communication, Rubbermaid, and IHG all have world or US headquarters in this neighborhood, as do newcomers State Farm and Mercedes. “Perimeter Mall is well placed,” Baker says. “There are cranes in the air all around us. MARTA rail system is here.” Baker adds that the construction on the Interstate 285-400 interchange should greatly improve traffic. The mall itself just completed a threeyear, multimillion-dollar renovation. Raised ceilings now open to skylights,

the sunlight brightening tiled corridors lined with modern takes on woven wingback chairs, contemporary sofas, and cafe tables and chairs. Where wrought-iron railings once stood, glass and brushed nickel give the space a polished look. Major retailers—Nordstrom, Von Maur, Macy’s, and Dillard’s—still anchor Perimeter Mall, alongside sought-after brands such as Apple, Lululemon Athletica, Madewell, and H & M. Some spots are new to the market. Lolli and Pops, an artisanal candy shop, sells global goods such as Madagascar chocolates, French macarons, and Japanese sodas. And Oil and Vinegar, like other trendy gourmet oil-and-vinegar shops popping up around the country, invites shoppers to sample the flavor difference between Italian Tuscan and Portuguese Alentejo oils in its tasting room. These enhancements all help maintain Perimeter Mall’s appeal, even in the face of online competition. “Nothing replaces going to the mall with your girlfriend or family and make an outing of it,” Baker says. “You can touch and feel and envision the merchandise.”
