Liebe B3-Comunitiy, die Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Cannes zählen zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Filmfestivals. Seit 1946 zieht es die berühmtesten und renommiertesten Filmschaffenden aus der Branche auf die Croisette - und auch dieses Jahr zeigte sich das Festival von seiner besten Seite: Kontrovers. Gehaltvoll. Ästhetisch. Die B3 war dieses Jahr im Rahmen einer kleinen Präsentation im „NEXT Pavilion“ dabei. Hier trafen sich Filmemacher, Produzenten, Storyteller, Finanziers und Vertriebsexperten, um die Zukunft des Kinos zu besprechen. Neben Stars und Sternchen, Glamour und Skandälchen fand man hier die Bewegtbild-Enthusiasten aller Couleur, von denen wir einige auf der B3 im Herbst wiedersehen werden. Wir werden berichten. China zieht an Die B3 bietet im Herbst 2015 einen speziellen Einblick in Chinas zeitgenössische Kunst. Dann werden sich in Frankfurt zehn chinesische Medien- und Konzeptkünstler präsentieren. Die Ausstellung versteht sich aber nicht nur als reine Präsentation von Bewegtbildmaterial, sondern will vielmehr einen innovativen Blick auf den Kreationsprozess der Werke werfen. In einem begleitenden Konferenzprogramm werden crossmediale Thematiken in allen Facetten beleuchtet. Basis ist eine Kooperation mit der Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing (CAFA). Mit einer interdisziplinären und crossmedialen Ausstellung präsentiert die CAFA unter dem Titel „B3+Beijing. Moving in Time“ vom 27. Mai bis 22. Juni 2015 im CAFA Museum 60 chinesische Künstler, die zwischen

den Medienwelten wandeln und neue crossmediale Sichtweisen bieten. Darunter sind viele junge und vielversprechende Talente sowie einige avancierte Künstler wie Xu Bing dabei. Eine chinesisch-deutsche Jury wählt die 10 besten Arbeiten der Ausstellung für die Präsentation in Frankfurt aus. Das einzigartige Projekt wird von maßgeblichen Kunstexperten aus China und Deutschland unterstützt, darunter dem Präsidenten der Central Academy of Fine Arts Fan Di’an - der aktuell auch „China 8“ und den chinesischen Beitrag zur Biennale in Venedig kuratiert hat - sowie der Frankfurter Medienkunst-Galeristin Anita Beckers. www.cafa.edu.cn; www.museum.cafa.com.cn; www.galerie-beckers.de

Call for Entries mit hervorragender Resonanz Mit 60 Einreichungen aus 17 Ländern ist der Call for Entries auf eine hervorragende Resonanz gestoßen. Gesucht wurden Projekte, Filme, Games und Videos, die das B3 Leitthema „Expanded Senses. Mit allen Sinnen erleben und Grenzen verschieben" aussagekräftig und innovativ umsetzen. Aus den Einsendungen wurden 6 Arbeiten ausgewählt, die im Rahmen der B3 präsentiert werden. Die ausgewählten internationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstler werden mit Unterstützung unseres Kooperationspartners Goethe Institut nach Frankfurt eingeladen, um ihre Werke persönlich vorzustellen und um an der B3 teilzunehmen.

Callgewinner I: Erkundung der versteckten Musik Christoph Janney ist ausgebildeter Architekt und Jazz-Musiker. Seit 1980 leitet er das multi-media Studio „PhenomenArts” Inc. Seitdem hat er zahlreiche dauerhafte interaktive Sound-/Lichtinstallationen und Aufführungen in den USA und Europa erstellt. Janney „erkundet die verborgene Musik" – im Raum, im menschlichen Körper und in den künstlerischen Gedanken.

Callgewinner II: Schnürboden Michael MacGarry ist ein bildender Künstler und Filmemacher aus Johannesburg, Südafrika. Er besitzt einen Masterabschluss für schöne Künste von der Universität von Witwatersrand. Über sein Film-Projekt Schnürboden: Beginnend im Jahr 1995 in Pretoria, Südafrika: Ein älterer ehemaliger Beamter wird – Jahre nach einem tödlichen Unfall seiner Familie – ein Besitzer eines großen, verlassenen und zentralen Wohnkomplexes, das er einst konstruierte hat – versehentlich Zeuge eines politischen Attentates und dadurch in eine gewalttätige Auseinandersetzung mit der modernen Gesellschaft gedrängt.

Sense of Doubt. Wider das Vergessen Um den Erzählungen der Macht entgegenzutreten, braucht es einen ausgeprägten Sinn zum Zweifeln. Dieser produktive Zweifel hilft, um in die Vergangenheit zu blicken. Er vergegenwärtigt das Verdrängte und macht auch Alternativen bewusst. Das Projekt Sense of Doubt zeigt mit einer Ausstellung von mehr als zwanzig Videokunstwerken im Park des Museum Angewandte Kunst sowie einer Serie von Vorträgen und Podiumsdiskussionen, wie dieser Sinn zum Zweifeln alternative Erinnerungen an historische Ereignisse zur Geltung bringen kann und in den aktuellen globalen Diskurs überführt.

Er war einer der Gründer der „United Artists Agency“. Heute leitet er mit Dan Brecher seine eigene Agentur „The Rothman Brecher Agency“. Sie repräsentiert Autoren und Regisseure aus TV und Film. Darunter befinden sich Autoren und Produzenten der Simpsons, Erfinder und Showrunner bei Stephen King’s Haven und The Big Bang Theorie.

Dear B3 Community, The international film festival in Cannes is among the most important film festivals world-wide. Since 1946 it has drawn the famous and renowned filmmakers to the Promenade de la Croisette – and once again, the festival presents its best side this year: controversial, substantial, aesthetic. This year B3 was also a part of it in the context of a small presentation in the “NEXT Pavilion,” where filmmakers, producers, storytellers, financiers and distribution experts meet up to discuss the future of cinema. In addition to stars (A-list and C-list), glamour and scandals, here you can find moving image enthusiasts of all stripes, including some we will see again at the B3 this fall. We’ll keep you posted. Ten Chinese media and concept artist are then on show in Frankfurt. However, the exhibition is not understood as a pure presentation of moving image material, but aims to cast an even more innovative perspective for the creative process of the works. The cross-medial themes will be illuminated in an accompanying conference. A cooperation with the Central Academy of Fine Arts Beijing (CAFA) forms the basis for this. With the title “B3+Beijing. Moving in Time,” the CAFA presents 60 Chinese artists that move between the media worlds and offer new, cross-medial perspectives with an interdisciplinary and cross-medial exhibition. Among them are many young and promising talents as well as some advanced artists like Xu Bing. A Chinese-German jury will select the ten best works from the exhibition for presentation in Frankfurt. Call for entries with extraordinary feedback With 60 submissions from 17 countries, the call for entries received an extraordinary response. The target was to attract projects, films, games, and videos that implement the B3 central topic “Expanded Senses. Art Body Communication” in a dynamic and innovative way. There were six works selected from the submissions that will be presented in the context of the B3. The international artists chosen will be invited to Frankfurt with the support of our cooperation partner Goethe Institut in order to personally present their work and participate in the B3.

Call winner I: an exploration of hidden music Christoph Janney is a trained architect and jazz musician. He has been the head of the multi-media studio “PhenomenArts Inc.” since 1980. He has produced numerous interactive sound and light installation and productions in the US and Europe. Janney “explores the hidden music” – in space, in the human body and in artistic thought.

Call winner II: Fly Space Michael MacGarry is a visual artist and filmmaker from Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand. Regarding his film project Fly Space: beginning in Pretoria, South Africa in 1995, an elderly former civil servant – years after an accident leading to the death of his family – the owner of a large, abandoned, and centrally located residential complex that he had originally constructed – involuntary witness of a political assassination and that way, is drawn into a violent conflict with the modern society.

Michael MacGarry privat Sense of Doubt. Against Forgetfulness We need a well-developed sense of doubt in order to counteract the narratives of power. This productive doubt enables us to see into the past. It makes present what was repressed and fosters an awareness of alternatives. With an exhibition of over 20 video artworks in the grounds of the Museum Angewandte Kunst and an accompanying series of lectures and panel discussions, the project Sense of Doubt aims to show how this sense of doubt can give currency to alternative memories of historical events and secure them a place in contemporary global discourse.

A Guest at the B3: Robb Rothman Robb Rothman started his career as an agent at the “Creative Artists Agency.” He was one of the founders of the “United Artists Agency.” Today he leads his own agency with Dan Brecher, “The Rothman Brecher Agency,” which represents authors and directors from TV and film, including authors and producers of The Simpsons, creators and showrunners of Stephen King’s Haven and of The Big Bang Theory.
