Chr. in einen Gesamtrahmen zu stellen und befreit damit die griechische Geschichte von der bislang blichen isolierten Betrachtung. "Die Geschichte des Altertums" gilt bis heute als eines der bedeutendsten Werke der Altertumswissenschaft, wenngleich das Werk freilich durch den modernen Forschungsstand in Teilen berholt ist.
